By way of full disclosure, I am acquainted with the author, being a fellow citizen scientist involved with the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory. While the author and I do not work on the same Hawkwatch team, we have met on a few occasions.I worried through the first fifty or so pages that the book might be a touch too basic, but it turned out that the book got better and better the more deeply into it I read. I suspect that this may have been a strategy to make the book accessible to a general audience less familiar with conservation science. Regardless, Hannibal probes into conservation issues in increasing depth as the book develops, and I found myself more engaged the more I read. The strength of this book is the depth of Hannibal’s research. She has done a remarkable job connecting with leading theorists, and in the process of her investigations has highlighted a wide range of issues facing conservation biology. What results is a survey of state-of-the-art concerns mixed with a constructive, hopeful approach to how citizen science can have a pronounced impact on environmental issues.I find myself disagreeing with the author labelling the likes of Ed Ricketts and Rachael Carson as citizen scientists. While they certainly helped shape our sense of ecology while working outside the constraints of academia, I would argue that “by their fruits they shall be known.” Books such as The Sea Around Us, Between Pacific Tides and Silent Spring demonstrate that Ricketts and Carson were scientists in every sense of the definition. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed Hannibal’s treatment of Campbell, Steinbeck and Ricketts during their days together in Monterey, and have decided to read further about that in terms of a recent biography of Carol Steinbeck.Hannibal reserved her best writing, both in terms of lyricism and emotional depth, for the final chapter of the book. It was nice to see her transcend the more sparse journalistic style she employs in other chapters. The book left me with a palpable sense of wishing the book had been twice as long, or at least hoping that we don’t have to wait long before we get to read Hannibal’s next book.

Mary Ellen Hannibal’s book Citizen Scientist goes much further than its title would suggest, including an excellent history of the San Francisco-based Academy of Science, and a great deal of rumination on earlier projects that featured non-scientists doing science, notably the Ed Ricketts and John Steinbeck trip to the Sea of Cortez in the 1940s. Much of our contemporary view of nature and wild life is rooted in 19th century sensibilities, that are in turn heavily influenced by Charles Darwin and his contemporaries. Tracing the influences on Ricketts back to his time at the University of Chicago, she describes a relatively unheralded zoologist there Warder Clyde Allee and his “organismic-community concept” which emphasizes the group over the individual. Hannibal writes beautifully about her father’s slow passing during the preparation of the book, providing a very personal experience of death to frame the abstract discussion of extinction and preservation that her book is about. When he dies near the end of her narrative, it gives her a chance to ruminate on systemic death as opposed to individual death, which is finally what we’re up against now."What about the imminent loss of not only thousands of individual plants and animals but also their future kith and kin—the moment still teetered between past and possibility; was not just death at the door but with it the end of birth? In the hero’s journey, one life ends to nourish those that will follow. But if this story no longer applies, because we are consuming and not sustaining nature, what is the meaning of individual life?" (Hannibal, p. 390)

I've recently finished reading this most enjoyable book. Those who not only enjoy science, but also the history of science, will surely enjoy this book. You'll learn about the history of The California Academy Sciences, contributions from John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts, as well as contributions by volunteers counting raptors in northern California and the denizens of Pacific tidepools. In light of recent political changes, many may wish to simply throw up their hands and ask, "What can I do?" Well, in this book, Mary Ellen Hannibal, gives numerous websites, computer applications, and organizations where ordinary citizens may contribute to protect the environment and the species that live in them. In fact, it is only by the contributions of ordinary citizens that the huge number of observations required for certain studies can be obtained. I did not know that after the Valdez accident in Alaska, because there was no baseline for the number of individuals and species, the Exxon company was able to pay minimal damages. Now, the author gives us the names and websites of organizations with volunteer citizen scientists collecting information along the west coast that can be used in a court of law so that the next time there is an environmental disaster the lack of a baseline cannot be used as an excuse. Now is the time for all of us to help maintain and restore our environment. Now is the time for all of us to learn how we might become active to achieve this goal.

Sean Carroll is a successful theoretical physicist, skilled ponderer of philosophical questions and gifted communicator of science. He brings all these qualities to bear in his big-hearted, ambitious latest book “The Big Picture.” The book is part sweeping survey of some of the most thought-provoking ideas in modern science, part sweeping rumination on two of the most fundamental questions that we can ask: How do we gain knowledge of the world? And how do we distill meaning from an impersonal, purely physical universe? The book can roughly be divided into two parts. The first part can be titled “How do we know” and the second can be titled “What do we know”. The siren song weaving its way through Carroll’s narrative is called poetic naturalism. Poetic naturalism simply means that there are many ways to talk about reality, and all of them are valid as long as they are rooted in naturalism and consistent with one another. This is the central message of the book: we make up explanations about the world and we call these explanations “stories” or “models” or “ideas”, and all of them are valid in their own ways. The first part of the book explores some of the central concepts in the philosophy of science that make up poetic naturalism. Carroll starts from Aristotle and the ancient Greeks and progresses through the Arabs. He explores the investigations of Galileo in the seventeenth century. It was Galileo and his intellectual successor Isaac Newton who showed that the world operates according to self-sufficient physical laws that don’t necessarily require external causes. One of the most important concepts explored in the book is Bayesian thinking, in which one assigns probabilities to phenomena based on one’s previous understanding of the world and then updates this understanding (or “priors”) according to new evidence. Bayesian thinking is a powerful tool for distinguishing valid science from invalid science, and for distinguishing science from nonsense: one could in fact argue that all human belief systems operate (or should operate) according to Bayesian criteria. Bayesianism does introduce an element of subjectivity in the scientific process, but as Carroll demonstrates, this supposed bias has not harmed our investigations of natural phenomena and has allowed us to come up with accurate explanations.Another thread weaving its way through the book is that of emergence and domains of applicability. Emergence means the existence of properties that are not strictly reducible to their constituent parts. Although Carroll is a physicist and holds fundamental physics in high regard, he appreciates that chemistry has its own language and neuroscience has its own language, and these languages are as fundamental to their disciplines as photons and electrons are to physics. No field of inquiry is thus truly fundamental in an all-encompassing sense, since there are always emergent phenomena that offer stories and explanations in their own right. Emergence also manifests itself in the form of what are called effective theories in physics; these are theories in which the macroscopic behavior of a system does not depend in a unique way on a detailed microscopic description: for instance a container of air can be perfectly described by properties like its average temperature and pressure without resorting to descriptions of quarks and Higgs bosons. As long as the two domains are consistent with each other (what Carroll calls “planets of belief”) we are on firm ground. These ideas lay the foundation for the second half of the book which takes us on a sweeping sojourn through many of the key ideas of modern science. Carroll says that the most important description of the world comes from what’s called the ‘Core Theory’. This theory ties together the fundamental forces of nature and particles like the Higgs boson; it is grounded in general relativity and quantum mechanics. It can explain the entire physical universe, from atoms to the Big Bang, certainly in principle but often in practice. If there's any one hard scientific lesson to take away from the book, it's that the universe is made up of quantum fields. Later chapters deal with topics like evolution in real time, photosynthesis and metabolism, leading theories for the origins of life, thermodynamics and networks in the brain. When Carroll talks about entropy, complexity and the arrow of time he’s in his element; one important aspect of complexity which I had not quite appreciated is that complexity can actually result from an increase, not decrease, of entropy and disorder if guided the right way.The book also dwells in detail upon Rene Descartes since his ideas of dualism and pure thought seem to pose challenge to poetic naturalism, but as Carroll demonstrates, these challenges are illusory since both the mind and the body can be shown to operate based on well known physical principles. These ideas keep appearing in the later parts of the book in which Carroll deals with many thought experiments in philosophy and neuroscience that purport to ask questions about reality and consciousness. Some experiments involve zombies, others involve aliens simulating us; all are entertaining. A big question is subjective experience (or “qualia”) which is sometimes regarded as some kind of impenetrable domain that’s divorced from objective laws of nature. For the most part Carroll convincingly shows us that the same laws of nature that give rise to the motion of the planets also give rise to one’s perception of the color red, for instance. This section of the book involving famous conundrums like John Searle’s Chinese Room and ‘Mary the Color Scientist’ is fascinating and highly thought-provoking, and while the thought experiments have no clear resolution, Carroll’s point is that none of them violate the basic naturalistic structure of the universe and demand mysterious explanations. His discussion of consciousness is also very stimulating; he thinks that consciousness is not really a thing per se but an emergent property of organized matter. More succinctly, it’s a useful invention, a description of a particular way in which matter behaves rather than something that is beyond our current understanding of natural law; it is what we say rather than what is. Much of Carroll’s discussion here reminds me, as cheesy as it sounds, of a line from ‘The Matrix’: words like love, care and purpose are mere descriptions borne of language - what matters are the connections they imply. The book ends by taking us on a tour of some of the most important philosophical questions that human beings have asked themselves; questions of meaning, purpose, emotion and free will. Personally I found this section a bit rambling but I cannot really blame Carroll for this: none of these questions have a definitive answer and all are subject to speculation. On the other hand, this little tour provides non-specialists with an introduction to well-known philosophers and philosophies, including constructivism, deontology and utilitarianism. The big question here is how meaning can arise from the impersonal natural laws that have been described so far. Neither Carroll nor anyone else knows the answer, and the book simply makes the case that all these qualities are emergent properties that are all consistent with poetic naturalism. You may or may not be satisfied by this answer, but it certainly provides food for thought. In a book as ambitious as this one there’s bound to be some disagreement, and that’s a good thing. Here are some questions I had: Generally speaking Carroll is on more firm ground when talking about science rather than philosophy. Quite oddly at one point, he uses poetic naturalism to argue against opposition to gay marriage and LGBT rights. While his support for these issues is one I heartily share, I am not sure poetic naturalism is the best or the most persuasive reason to uphold these causes: we should support them not because of but in spite of naturalistic reasons. Also, Carroll who is a self-professed naturalist spends several paragraphs describing how all of the arguments for a supernatural God violate naturalism. However I think religion has a purpose beyond describing the real world, and ironically this purpose lends itself to the same analysis that Carroll does of human qualities like care and love. I would think that based on much of the book’s narrative, religion would be described as an emergent phenomenon that provides people with a set of stories and descriptions; these stories provide succor and and a sense of community. Are these stories real? They may not be, and they are certainly not grounded in natural law, but Carroll himself says at one point that models of the world should be used because they are useful, not because they claim to be real. Shouldn’t one say the same thing about the positive and personal aspects of religion? However, none of these concerns should detract from the sweeping scientific and philosophical journey the book takes us on. Carroll is an engaging, sympathetic and pleasant guide to the big picture, irrespective of whether you agree with him completely or not. Ranging over some of the most pressing questions that humanity has unearthed and continues to unearth, the one clear message in the book is an unambiguous one: we will always keep on searching, and this search will continue to propel humanity past unexpected and exciting horizons. More than anything else the discussion drives home the grandeur of the universe and the human mind, and this is grandeur we should all revel in. Perhaps this bit of wisdom from Carroll’s chapter on entropy where he is describing complexity in a cup of coffee sums it up best: “Those swirls in the cream mixing in the coffee? That’s us. Ephemeral patterns of complexity, riding a wave of increasing entropy from simple beginnings to a simple end. We should enjoy the ride.”

The Big Picture by Sean Carroll is an excellent book for anyone who wants a concise, understandable, and we'll written overview of modern science, with an emphasis on quantum mechanics and the philosophy of Poetic Naturalism. In this review I will focus on the philosophical side of his work and particularly his treatment of issues related to consciousness. As Carroll puts it, "Naturalism” claims that there is just one world, the natural world... (while) “Poetic” reminds us that there is more than one way of talking about the world . He describes these different ways of talking about the world as an "interconnected series of models appropriate at different levels". From this perspective, physics, chemistry, biology, and even psychology and sociology are simply different but useful ways of talking about the same world. From a scientific perspective, the most fundamental way of talking about the world is quantum field theory and, more specifically, the Core Theory, a term coined by Nobel Laueate Frank Wilczek. The Core Theory may be viewed as quantum field theory within a "domain of applicability" that includes most of the universe in which we live but excludes certain phenomena (e.g. dark matter, the big bang and black holes). Though the Core Theory is not the elusive Theory of Everything, it has been validated by so much data from so many experiments that it may be as close as we ever get to scientific certainty. As Carroll puts it, "We can be confident that the Core Theory, accounting for the substances and processes we experience in our everyday life, is correct. A thousand years from now we will have learned a lot more about the fundamental nature of physics, but we will still use the Core Theory to talk about this particular layer of reality". That is an audacious claim, but Carroll supports that claim with rigorous scientific reasoning.Carroll views higher level or "coarse grained theories" such as chemistry and biology as "emergent" and describes them as "... speaking different languages, but offering compatible descriptions of the same underlying phenomena in their respective domains of applicability". For example, chemistry and biology are emergent models of the universe, compatible with each other and the Core Theory, but with unique utilities in their particular domain of applicability. He briefly mentions supervenience, the view that emergent theories exist in an ontological hierarchy where higher level theories rest on more fundamental theories. For example, there could be no change at the level of biology without there being a change in the underlying chemistry. Similarly, there could be no change at the level of chemistry absent a change in the more fundamental physics. All of the models are interconnected and interdependent. Though each model has its own unique utility and coherence, that utility and coherence ultimately rests on a consistency with other more fundamental models.Unfortunately, Carroll's treatment of how different emergent models relate to each other alternates between autonomous or semiautonomous utility on the one hand and consistency with more fundamental models on the other. Though he warns readers not to begin a sentence in one model and end it in another, by moving between these two criteria for the validity of those models, he committs a very similar error. He frequently refers to consistency or compatibility among different models as essential, but also writes, "Within their respective domains of applicability, each theory is autonomous—complete and self-contained, neither relying on the other". This is just one example of where he suggests that the soundness of a model can be evaluated by its utility and internal coherence, and without reference to consistency with more fundamental models. In my opinion, when this level of credence is given to utility, one has entered a slippery slope that can lead to invalid ontological conclusions. Now, the criteria of utility does have its own domain of applicability, namely when the theory does not make ontological claims. For example, there are languages or ways of talking about everything from hair styling to stamp collecting that do not make claims about fundamental reality. Even Newtonian physics has its utility within its particular domain of applicability. In these areas, utility is a perfectly reasonable criteria. But when it comes to any model that claims to reflect, at some level, an underlying reality, utility by itself is an inadequate criteria.Another example is theism, a world view that Carroll does an excellent job demonstrating why it is not only unnecessary but a way of looking at the world but one that is ultimately inconsistent with the Core Theory. But if one evaluates the validity of theism, and particularly the theism embodied in major world religions such as Jewdaism, Christianity, and Islam, from the perspective of their utility, one is headed for an ontological train wreck. Who can deny the comfort (i.e. utility) that faith in a loving god and a blissful after life has given millions if not billions of people? But does that mean that such a world view is real in the same sense that the Core Theory is real? Of course not.The same logic applies to the role of consciousness in human behavior. Though there may be personal or social utility in the belief that conscious intent is responsible for human behavior, such a position is inconsistent with everything we know from cognitive science and everything we know about how the world works according to the Core Theory. Behavior emerges from complex brain activity, not inner experiences. The fact that our brain is responsible for both behavior and consciousness, at approximately the same time, gives rise to the illusion that conscious intent causes behavior. It is no more reasonable to claim that consciousness is responsible for behavior than to claim that a god is responsible for behavior or that a roosters crowing causes the sun to rise.Carroll tries to get around this by claiming that consciousness is just another way of talking about brain activity and the deeper layers of chemistry and physics. Unfortunately, reducing consciousness to a way of talking about experience fails to solve the Hard Problem. Consciousness is more than just a way of talking about brain states. It is dependent for its existence and form on those states, but is not identical to them. I do not claim to know what consciousness is, but whatever it is, it is more than words. Thus, poetic naturalism fails as a satisfactory philosophy of mind on two counts. First, it fails to give an adequate understanding of inner experience and secondly, it provides credence to the idea that consciousness is responsible for behavior. The first failure is understandable; the Hard Problem is hard for a reason and no one has yet come up with a satisfactory solution to it. As David Chalmers has said, that may take a hundred years. But Carroll should have seen the second failure coming. By allowing for the claim that consciousness can be responsible for behavior, he is opening the door for a new element in the Core Theory, an element he has argued persuasively does not exist. If it existed, this new element or property, somehow related to connsciousness, would make David Chalmers a very happy camper, but for the Sean Carroll who describes the Core Theory with such reverence, not so much.In conclusion, The Big Picture is an excellent book on the current status of science and his portrait of Poetic Natualism as a unifying philosophy. For those reasons, I highly recommend it to interested lay readers. However, I also urge those readers to be very careful in analyzing his treatment of consciousness. I believe he made a significant error in that analysis, though the error could very easily be my own.

Review

“Recommended for general readers, all academic levels, and professionals and practitioners.”  —Choice“The author brings new ideas and insight to issues which have long been the focus of academic debate.”  —Expository Times “Everyone who needs to know about Zoroastrianism must read this well written book.”  —Dr. Pallan R. Ichaporia, coauthor/cotranslator, Gathas“Zoroastrianism addresses, in a unique and compelling way, ethical issues that are still alive in the modern world. Not only does it raise fundamental questions about what it is to be a human being, and the nature of good and evil, it also considers the relationship of humans to the natural world in a vibrantly positive light.”  —Dr. W. J. Johnson, University of Wales, Cardiff

For anyone who has never heard of this religion or has a passing interest, this is an ideal book, portable and easy to read and not too technical. I could have done with a bit more on theology, liturgy and religious practices but that would have made for a bulky tome which might not suit the needs of a casual observer. Jim.

While the title of this book is "An Introduction" it goes into great detail and for me, reading this book, was in fact a colorful journey into a world that, as a Christian, is startlingly familiar. My favorite chapter would have to be "The Two Existences and the Problem of Evil", where the Spiritual and Material worlds are discussed with such freshness that it is as though you are just discovering them for the first time. Clark's description of the Zoroastrian Creation Myth is also fascinating - and it is nothing like Genesis 1!

interesting book

as promised

This book is, hands down, the best systematic presentation of the Zoroastrian world-picture that I've ever read. It brings together the Gathas, the priesthood, the Yasna Liturgy, cosmology, and culture to show Zoroastrianism as a living faith in all its glorious complexity. Dr. Clark does a wonderful job explaining terminology and open debates. He thoroughly documents all of his sources for those interested in digging deeper. The only flaw I found with his work was that he was, in some ways, too enamoured with his subject. Sometimes he almost loses his scholarly objectivity, especially when comparing Zoroastrianism to other living religions, Christianity in particular. One example will suffice: Late in the book he notes that Christian missionaries used "unfair" tactics in their analysis by comparing the Vendidad quite unfavorably (read the book and you'll understand) with the Gospels and arguing from that that Zoroastrians should convert to Christianity. Dr. Clark remarks something to the effect that "of course a fairer comparison would be to compare the Vendidad not with the Gospels, but with Leviticus". Actually, his desire to present Zoroastrianism in the best possible light as a viable contemporary tradition has lead him to "lose it" here. It is imminently fair and reasonable to compare the Vendidad to the Christian Gospels and not to Leviticus because Christianity (except for some real fringe groups) doesn't claim Leviticus has any normative authority over Christians in the same sense that the Zoroastrians claim the Vendidad is authoritative over them. Comparing Vendidad to Gospel *is* comparing apples to apples.Other than this and a couple other "Come on!" moments, the book was quite informative. It's refreshing to read a book by a scholar who is passionately devoted to his subject. If you would like to learn more about the Ashavan community or about the Gathic faith, this is the book to read!

Everyone who needs to know about Zoroastrianism must read this well written book

This is a book for "pretty". I've dyed with powdered indigo a few times and thought I'd take it a bit further this year and grow some Japanese indigo plants. I was wildly excited to see the release information (including a section on fresh leaf dyeing) on this book a few weeks before I'd planned on harvesting and pre-ordered it. I was quite sad to discover that "Indigo: Cultivate, Dye, Create" is primarily a book for looking at, and, even then not often. First, the binding. My copy arrived with the corners slightly smashed because the pages are only affixed to the binding by the rear flyleaf paper. This allows the sewn pages to shift around quite a bit within the binding and will inevitably wear a tear through the flyleaf paper. It's unique and totally impractical. You'll have to sit at a table to read the book and, even then, be quite careful with it. The authors evidently didn't actually try most of the vat formulas in the book; they just copied from other sources. Information is scant and troubleshooting advice even scanter. There's no information on preparing fabric other than "we recommend washing items first" - no discussion of PFD fabrics, scouring, cellulose vs. protein fibers...nada. If you are serious about tackling any of the vats in this book, I highly recommend searching the web for far more information that is available here. The one dye process that had photographs and worked well for me was the ice water fresh leaf dyeing. I am under the impression this is the only process the authors actually tried. There's a projects section for using your newly dyed fabric. Again, information is very scant and you're going to have to do much more research to successfully complete most of these processes. There is no index. There is no materials directory or suggestions for finding additional information. If you want to leave an attractive book on your coffee table to impress your friends with your "maker" chops, this book is entirely suitable. If you want to seriously approach dyeing with indigo, go elsewhere for information.

This is by far the best book in the series. I could not put it down. The action packed story raises the stakes as the gang solves every mystery thrown there way only to discover more. The hum-drum patterns established in the last books gets shaken up in this book but in a plausible, facinating way that seemed like an actual plot progression instead of a random idea that came out of left field (the beginning premise of the last book). Though it's taken three books to get here, I'm glad I stuck it out. The layers of the story are falling into place. The characters, even the mysterious ones, have gained depth, and we got to focus on a new group of characters as the main focus of the story, allowing us to get a better grasp of the whole cast. Pushing past the confines of the school and every day school life has made this series completely engaging and exciting. Not to mention, the quality of the writing has improved exponentially. Very pleased and looking forward to the next installment.

It is so fun to watch a series grow up with each and every installment. The Gallagher Girls series has done just that. From a silly tween series to an engaging young adult series with real characters and real problems, Only the Good Spy Young is a wonderful transformation to be a part of!In the third book, Cammie realized it wasn't Macey McHenry the rouge spies were trying to kidnap, it was her. With this realization comes the terrifying reality that her favorite teacher, Joe Solomon, might be part of the organization that is trying to take Cammie. Now that Solomon is on the run, a new Covert Ops teacher is assigned to the Academy, but he seems only concerned with getting into Sublevel Two and what the girls know about Solomon. The most important teacher with the most important class, but he doesn't teach them anything- only presses them for any information they might be hiding. When it comes out that Solomon was somehow involved in her father's disappearance, Cammie is determined to get to the bottom of what Solomon's involvement was in her father's disappearance and her kidnapping attempts. The only way she can really get the information, however, is by learning more about her friend Zach from Blackthorne and with the help of her faithful friends, Bex, Liz, and Macey. This fourth book was much more serious. The girls are now in real danger at the hand of the secret society that is after Cammie. The fact that the rouge spies shot and nearly killed her Aunt Abby at the end of the third book makes this story line all the more serious. And with more serious danger comes a more thrilling story. The nicest part of this series is the fact that the books are short, and won't overwhelm a reluctant reader, but they will grow with the reader, pushing them to more mature stories and reading levels. This story ends with a little bit of a cliffhanger, so I hope Ally Carter pulls another Gallagher Girls story out soon!

"I am prepared for a lot of scary situations. After all, in the last year and a half I'd been fake kidnapped once, almost truly kidnapped twice, targeted by one international terrorist organization and two incredibly cute boys. So, scary? Yeah, scary and I go way back." - Cammie Morgan in Only the Good Spy Young.Cammie Morgan is the daughter of two very talented CIA agents. She started learning trade secrets when she was still in kindergarten. She's been attending the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women since the seventh grade. She's always known she was destined for a career in espionage. So her problem is more one of timing. She didn't expect to be facing the world's most dangerous international terrorists before her seventeenth birthday. After being targeted by the Circle of Cavan in the first semester of her junior year at Gallagher, Cammie Morgan is now in constant danger. She's also the most heavily guarded girl on the planet. So she feels pretty safe spending winter break in London with her roommate Bex and Bex's MI-6 parents. At least she feels safe right up until the Circle makes another attempt to abduct her - an attempt that very nearly succeeds, despite all the guards. And after learning that someone close to her, someone she has trusted, is actually working for the Circle? Suddenly Cammie doesn't feel safe at all. When the school term begins, Cammie has to endure more changes. The one place that has always been a haven for her is suddenly feeling a lot more like a prison. Friends, teachers, fellow students - Cammie is no longer sure who she can trust. As time passes and the danger continues to grow, Cammie becomes certain of just one thing. She can't sit around and wait for others to save her. She needs to figure out what the Circle wants with her and she needs to figure it out right now.As Cammie would say, "Oh. My. Gosh." This series has gotten better with each and every book. Only the Good Spy Young is the fourth Gallagher Girls adventure and it is truly outstanding. The plot will keep you riveted and the twists and turns will keep you guessing until the end. I can't believe I have to wait until 2012 for the next installment.

I read OGSY when it first came out years ago and it was my favorite book in the series! It was truly an emotional roller coaster for my little 7th grade heart. So many plot twists, and turns..half way through the book I didn't trust anybody! Solomon has always been one of- if not my most- favorite character, and this book certainly answered a lot of questions I had about him.Now after reading the new 10th anniversary book with the new chapter, I have to say that I'm a bit more confused than ever. *Spoilers* Townsend and Zach have met; its during the summer that Cammie ran away and Townsend went to the Baxter's flat. So this brings up the question of why did they act like total strangers in that alley in the 5th book? They beat each other up, then later introduce themselves as if they've never met before... what's that all about?? What was the point of that little act? Anyways, love the series and adore Ally Carter.

Review

“A revealing new volume. Chapters on geology and the short- and long-term effects of volcanic eruptions add depth to Witze and Kanipe’s discussion, rounding out a work that serves as a valuable reminder of just how much we remain at Mother Nature’s mercy.” - Publishers Weekly“Deftly interweaving information compiled by naturalists and astronomers of the day (and even Benjamin Franklin, who was in Paris during the eruption) with interviews with modern-day scientists and historians, the authors provide a captivating overview of an eruption.” - Science News“Witze and Kanipe have written a compelling and engrossing story of Laki and its worldwide impact. As the best book authors do, they have also ferreted out facts and examples that make their specific story one with implications for modern readers. It is a book that will surely make you want to go to Iceland, or at least pay careful heed to the next time one if its many volcanoes erupt.” - The Seattle Times“A terrific, disturbing book. In their fast-paced, enjoyable text the authors show how vulnerable we remain to the most unpredictable of natural disasters.” - Gillian Darley, author of VESUVIUS“A story for the ages. But beneath the barrage of devastation lies an even more profound story: why do we forget these dangers?” - Dr. Lindy Elkins-Tanton, Carnegie Institution for Science“A brilliant book. While Iceland’s volcanology became front-page news in 2010 when Eyjafjallajökull grounded flights across Europe for almost a week, Kanipe and Witze situate that recent eruption in the country’s tragic volcanic history and volatile geology.” - Casey N. Cep, Pacific Standard“For those with an interest in history and/or geology.” - The Birdbooker Report/Nature.com

This is an excellent introduction for the casual reader to the horrific eruption of the Icelandic volvano, Laki, in 1783. The gases and ash of this volcano and the resulting famine killed nearly a quarter of the Icelandic population and much of the livestock on which they depended. It also had catastrophic effects in the British Isles and continental Europe. It is remembered as well for Benjamin Franklin's remarkable insight (ignored at the time) that the widespread suffering resulted from a volcanic eruption. Witze and Kanipe skillfully explain the history and science of Icelandic vulcanism, all the while interweaving the wonderful story of the heroic priest, Jon Steingrimsson, who famously stopped a flow of lava with his legendary Fire Mass and sacrificed his health and wealth to help his suffering countrymen.

A misleading title. The "Island of Fire" (Iceland) and the volcano Laki, figure little in the book after the first 50 pages or so. The book is really a compendium of volcanoes around the world with eruptions that have caused great devastation and loss of life. It's an interesting topic but has little to do with Laki, supposedly the central topic of the book, or with Iceland for that matter. Interesting, but I found it difficult to read, as it jumps around the world. "Iceland" and "Laki" have only small parts to play, and the sub-title on the cover jacket, "The Extraordinary Story of a Forgotten Volcano That Changed the World" is misleading.(I wish the authors had included a pronunciation guide, Icelandic names are difficult.)

This is a fascinating book with maps, photos and an index. Contents are as follows: (Preface) Heimaey 1973; (1) Laki erupts 1783; (2) land of ice and fire: the volcanoes of Iceland; (3) supervolcanoes, the world's hotspots; (4) fire, famine and death: the poisoning of Iceland; (5) horrible phenomena: Europe's "year on wonders"; (6) the big chill: Laki's global fallout; (7) Laki today: life in the mountain's shadow; (8) death by volcano: the many ways eruptions can kill; (9) the next big bang: how worried should we be?There is a very conversation style of writing that is easy to read. I was particularly interested by the Chapter 8 discussion of the killer lakes of Camaroon, Africa, which can emit eruptions of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas which flow downhill and kill people by suffocation. The lake eruptions were controlled by placing vertical pipes down to the bottom of the lakes and letting the absorbed CO2 escape to the surface a little at a time.I highly recommend this book for those interested in learning about volcanos.

Aside from being written for middle schoolers, about half of this book is written about cool volcano "stuff". There's fully 3 chapters of information about Laki and it's 1783 eruption, the rest is fluff from natgeo. The huge breakthroughs in linking this event to a turning of human history are a stretch at best (the authors even concede after pages of suggesting that Laki contributed to the French Revolution that it actually probably didn't...), and aside from a seemingly enjoyable trip (emphasis on singular there) to Iceland to see the landscape and interview some Icelanders with no specific knowledge of the event, the research could have been done with Wikipedia. The pretty pictures were a nice touch. Also thanks for haranging us about man made global warming at the end. So let me get this straight: Laki belched a billion tons of Ash, acidic sulfur, Co2 and whatever else - for 8 straight months in 1783 - and caused global climate insanity, but we are to believe that because we drive cars that the melting of glaciers means there is less weight to hold down the volcanos? Do I have that right? Also please note that pages 121 - 136 do not exist. Seriously - they are literally missing.Awful, awful book.

Iceland is a wonderful place to visit with an extraordinary landscape, history, and people. As it is one of the most geologically active places in the world you might expect that volcanoes have played a big role in shaping the geography and the history of the island. After eyjafjallajokull erupted in 2010 the world became suddenly aware of the possibilities for a volcano to affect the world. In 1783 a volcano called Laki also changed the world. This book tells the story of the Laki eruption and how it affected Iceland and the world at large. It also discusses how volcanoes have shaped our climate and society over time. The geology and environmental chemistry is well explained to a general audience and the style is easy going. As a book which tells a gruesome history (Laki) and how volcanoes can and will shape our world in the future.

I like the intersection of natural science and human history, and bought this because I'd heard of the Laki eruption from reading about the ice core data, but had never seen a good narrative of the 1783 eruption. This fit the bill perfectly. It is quite readable and well researched. It's a timely read too, because in August 2014 the Bardarbunga volcano erupted in Iceland in a long duration high out gassing eruption, termed "the largest such eruption since 1783"! I think it's still ongoing now ( Feb 2015).

Very good it was very descriptive very interesting

Well written for a first book. As a volcanologist, I tagged all the pages with first hand accounts. Witze and Kanipe did a great job making these accounts scientifically relatable and significant. I especially enjoyed the extrapolation to modern day possibilities.

many informative tips, thank you very much

So useful tips.

A must for every office professional!

Learned how to do something I've been trying to figure out on my own for a month within 5 minutes of cracking open this book. YES! (Pinning an app to my start screen.) Windows 8.1 has a lot of cool features, but it is NOT an intuitive system. 100 Tops lays out very clear, concise instructions for everything from how to navigate Windows 8.1 without a mouse to how to use things like heat maps and sparklines. Some of the tips are things you already knew how to do, but many of them are neat tricks you didn't even imagine were possible!I had the opprtunity to learn these tips from the author herself at a 2-hour training session put on by my company, and she clearly REALLY knows her stuff. She even signed copies of peoples' books for them, haha. The book is a great stand-alone resource, but if you have a large group of people that could benefit from this info, definitely look into getting Vickie to come out and lead your group directly as well as utilizing the book.

A few minutes in this handy book will save you HOURS of time and frustration to quickly accomplish tasks in Windows and Microsoft Office products. Vickie is a whiz at finding tips and tricks that will amaze you. She is a dynamic instructor and has a wonderful mix of information and humor and you will find it near impossible to walk away from this book or her trainings saying "Oh, I already knew all of that". She will show you how to master tasks you didn't even know you needed to know.

Full disclosure: I have known Vickie Evans for 10 years and have been teaching with her for the last 4. We travel the world together and I get to see and hear the response from our students and audiences to Vickie's 100 Tips book. (Tears of joy are not uncommon.) Quite simply, Vickie is the best technology trainer in the world who happens to be an extremely fine and clear writer too. Her book helps me every day to navigate the twists and turns of MS Office. Vickie is an expert at what every person on the planet who uses a computer needs to know. Invest in many copies of her books and they will save you and the ones you care about many, many, many hours of work. Watch her on YouTube and see her in person if you can. Most definitely, buy her books. I promise you that it will be life-changing and you will write to Vickie to thank her for downloading her brain onto these pages.

In addition to the book you need to book this lady for a training. She makes what can seem so complicated, easy. Vickie is funny as heck and extremely talented in the area of product training. Her book is a great resource for when you want to dig deep on a project using Windows or Office or if you want to just get a refresher on how to use that one feature you have been meaning to try. Get the book, better yet book her training.

Vickie Sokol Evans' book, 100 Tips using Windows 8.1 & Office 2013, has been a life changer for me. It is the handiest book for any office administrator or anyone who works with a computer. I thought I was pretty proficient with the computer, but realized how much I'd forgotten and/or how much time I'd been wasting before I purchased this book. The tips show me how to get things done faster and more efficiently, which has saved me many, many hours. The Power Point tips have helped me out multiple times and saved me lots of hours when time was not on my side. I highly recommend this book!! You won't be sorry!!
