ChiWalking: Fitness Walking for Lifelong Health and Energy, by Danny Dreyer Katherine Dreyer

Review

Unless you are unable to walk, you probably take walking for granted. To most people, it doesn't seem like an important physical activity or even a sport. Yet, according to Danny Dreyer and Katherine Dreyer, some 80 million Americans consider walking their most important physical activity. For this sequel to their ChiRunning, the authors apply the principles of balance and energy from t'ai chi to create ''ChiWalking.'' The 11 chapters follow their ''Five Mindful Steps'': ''Get Aligned,'' ''Engage Your Core,'' ''Create Balance,'' ''Make a Choice,'' and ''Move Forward.'' Each chapter is filled with good black-and-white photographs illustrating the techniques discussed; pictures showing the best technique are side by side with pictures showing the worst technique. This book would be helpful for those interested in walking for their health. Recommended for all consumer health collections. --Library Journal

I thought I knew how to walk, even though I continually hurt my calves. Quit walking? Not willing, so enter Chi Walking and Chi Running! It has taken several years, but now I am walking completely differently, and finally have no pain! Unintended side benefit: I can walk on ice without slipping and without fear. I may get back to running even, if I choose. Thank you Danny Dreyer, Katherine Dreyer, and your publisher, editor, and everyone else connected with this project! I think of you often, share your ideas with others, and continually monitor my movements with an open mind that there is always a better way.

ChiWalking, by (mostly) Danny and (partly) Katherine Dreyer is an easy-to-read and easy-to-understand book about -- surprise! -- WALKING. But it is about walking with a twist, i.e., walking deliberately, using the principles of Tai Chi, which stresses, above all else, keeping ones balance. And the best way to keep ones balance is to stand, or move, keeping all of ones weight (head, chest, and pelvis) as centrally aligned as possible over the center of gravity at all times. The Dreyers outline very carefully how one can accomplish this, and advise the reader to adopt the way of walking in a step-by-step (no pun intended) manner, using the Tai Chi principle of "Gradual Progress" to ensure that one has thoroughly learned "step A" before one moves on to "step B." Even though the book is easy to read and understand, it makes it clear that the program that it promotes will take a lot of time, so be prepared to read it again and again. That's not bad, though, as it is quite an enjoyable read.

What a lot of talk! I started to skim early on, looking for the meat. Maybe the philosophical stuff is valuable, and if you're already a committed walker you may enjoy all the talk. However, the bottom line for me is, after doing just a little chi walking, my aching knees feel better. I'll continue even though I still think it looks silly.

Major emphasis on philosophy of life and how to live, with minor attention to walking technique (especially as compared to Chi Running).

Because I like walking as my main exercise, I appreciate the detail the authors provide to explain the advisable techniques for walking. The authors' recommendations are supported by people experienced with Chi Walking and Chi Running. The book is quite involved, and relatively easy to understand and apply. In addition to walking, the book approaches the topic from a whole person perspective. It's my most important reference as I develop the skills utilized in walking.Bill S.

This book has helped me integrate another method of exercise in a way that is not going to compromise my physical body. As I age, I look for different ways to exercise that gets my heart rate up and doesn't damage my body. ChiWalking was explained clearly, exercises for strengthening my core were provided which helped me with Chiwalking over long distances. Even though walking is a non-invasive form of exercise, the directions to Chiwalking, if followed, will help me be able to maintain physical fitness well into my later years.

My physical therapist recommended this book following my recovery from a broken leg. I've been walking and running wrong for decades!RAC

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to be able to move around pain-free both during the exercise and subsequently. Danny Dreyer knows his stuff I'm taking classes with him in person and if you look at the stats online you'll see he's a top performer. I highly recommend this book for you and anyone else you want to get active.

I am a behavioral Neuroendocrinologist and picked this up to refresh my memory of some concepts and learn others. I don't need about one-third of the book but the remaining two-thirds are excellent. It is a science text book and is full of technical language and terms but written in such a way to clearly set up and finish the chapters. I highly recommend.

Beware - the paperback version does NOT come in color. It is GRAYSCALE. This doesn't mean that it was a bad textbook, but the visuals were significantly more difficult to understand without color. Otherwise, the textbook is great.

Clean, great quality book. I was worried by how cheap it is compared to other textbooks I've had to get in the past, but this product is the real deal, actual textbook I needed. I got an A in the class, thank you!

Thank you

Great introduction to the topic. Easy to read and follows a consistent structure of describing ethology, then neuroscience. Suitable for a senior level undergrad or a basic graduate course.

With few exceptions the fields of neurobiology, ethology, and animal learning proceed in parallel in the academy, practitioners toiling productively in their respective fields but too rarely taking the time to exchange findings with people who share their questions if not their methods. This book builds wonderful, enlightening bridges between these disciplines, and in the process provides explanations for fascinating phenomena that cannot be fully understood at just one level of analysis. How, for example, does an owl know where in space the sound of a mouse scrabbling through leaves originates? How do bats manage to extract auditory images of the world precise enough to catch mosquitos on the fly? How do songbirds learn to sing just the right song in a world full of other birds singing other songs? These and many other specific questions are answered in ways that illuminate more general principles about how brains work so that by the end of the book one has a very strong sense of the possibility that the complexity of behavior in all its forms really can be brought into focus and explained in ways that are very satisfying. Given the technical nature of much of the basic research this is a very manageable read, although some prior background in one or more of the relevant disciplines makes the experience that much more rewarding. It's technically a text book, but it's a great read.

I ordered for my son, it was assigned reading for 6th grade. I decided to read to help with the book report. Really a good story. Great boys books!

Watt Key has written a nail-biting survival story with Terror at Bottle Creek. I flew through the book in a day because I had to know what happened to Cort, Liza, and Francie. Cort lives with his father along a creek in southern Alabama and a hurricane is on the way. As Cort and his father prepare for the storm, Cort wants his father to stop visiting his mother who left them some months before. He also thinks about Liza and asking her to an upcoming dance. But once the storm hits and Cort and the girls end up alone, survival takes priority. When Francie gets dragged out into the storm by Cort's dog and ends up stranded on Cort's family's houseboat, he can't leave her there, so he and Liza take his father's boat and go after her. They end up stranded in the bayou with no shelter and rising floodwaters as well as rain and wind. As they head for higher ground, Cort worries about how he can keep himself and the girls alive, especially once it becomes evident that many animals are heading to the same high ground. Key does a fabulous job creating a powerful story of courage and determination as well as friendship and family. I thoroughly enjoyed this as a story of survival as well as growing up and carrying on in the face of seemingly impossible odds. This is a great book to give to children who enjoyed Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.

perfect book for a young reader to find adventure in a book. I also read it to what it was all about. Would suggest this to a young reader 10 to 14

This book took me by surprise. It was super scary in just the right way. Because of the great story and the descriptive language I’ll forgive the boy-saves-girl trope.

I've done this book as a read aloud a couple of times with my middle school students, and they always love it! It's one of the most checked out books on my shelves. A quick read and filled with suspense and action, I would definitely recommend it!

My 12 year old grandson really liked this book and wanted another by this author.

Kids liked it

Watt Key writes about what he knows and he embellishes beautifully. I have l lived in this area all of my life and can relate.

There is a thread of religious belief in Protestant and other late coming churches who believe that the Early Church was somehow lost during what is known as The Great Apostasy. They seek out this time, frequently blamed on Constantine and tied to the Council of Nicaea, in order to justify their own beliefs and rejections of the Catholic Church or other high church traditions. Rod Bennett took this for granted at one point in his life and was faced with a jarring conclusion while a visiting a strange place one day. This book is his answer for what he found when he turned to history and the people who were there for the answers instead of what the storyline required to justify various sects.Told in a conversational style using a lot of fictionalized vignettes, but strongly anchored to the writings and so far as we know them the characters of the Church Fathers and their opponents. This makes some dense material more approachable. As a Catholic, I know that this thread exists claiming the Catholic Church somehow subverted the will of the Apostles, but I never realized that it was blamed on the defeat of Arianism. This just doesn't make sense given most of these people and churches accept the Trinity and the divinity of Christ so not clear why they would wish to align otherwise. This book laid that out well by showing exactly what myths are perpetuated. It kind of like the Fulton Sheen quote of few hating the actual Church, but millions hating what they think it is. A healthy dose of Church Fathers is good for everyone and this was a very nice dose of medicine. The style provides a little cover for the deep history presented.

An outstanding source of factual information regarding the truth of the Council of Nicea and the limited role played by Constantine. The use of the narrative voice to convey the setting and the roles is very effective. And the inclusion of more than 200 factual footnotes makes it easy to cross reference any statement with which the reader may take issue. The description of the setting for St. Jerome's translation of the Greek Scriptures into Latin seemed more an afterthought or side story. While it did give historical context to the celebration of Christmas, it did not make clear the importance and purpose for St. Jerome's translation and writing of the Latin Vulgate, which I thought could have been done without going too far from the path. The condensed section at the end showing the church and its universally held truths that predated Nicea and Constantine by more than 200 years should be required reading for anyone who seeks the historical truth of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church, untainted by fashionable stories and fictional movies.

I was amazed at the amount of myth and misinformation, concerning the early Church, which I had been taking for granted as accepted fact. Bennett is the anti- Dan Brown, and this book should be on the must read list of any truth seeking Christian.

Excellent book, though a more difficult read than his first book, Four Witnesses, The Early Church in Her Own Words. In this book Mr. Bennett carefully studied the myth believed many people that while though the Catholic Church was the church established by Jesus but after a while it fell apart and went into apostasy. If what those people teach was true, Rod wanted to find the history of how that happened. So to his credit, he began his quest for truth. Very well researched and a powerful, and persuasive must read for all believers. Highly recommend!!!

As a fan of Bennett's previous work, FOUR WITNESSES, I've been looking forward to this book ever since I heard that it was to be published. (Rod Bennett is Mark Shea's Thursday co-host on the Bread Box Media radio show Connecting the Dots, and I listen to the podcast--ahem--religiously.) I tore through THE APOSTASY THAT WASN'T in about a day, and I am happy as a clam, because it does almost exactly what FOUR WITNESSES did, just for a slightly later period of history.I'd say both FOUR WITNESSES and this book are written at a reading level that an advanced 8th grader could absorb, given some basic New Testament knowledge and enough interest. It's probably not necessary to have read FOUR WITNESSES first, although familiarity with Bennett's style--a blend of block-quotes from dozens of sources, tied together at various points with either narrated historical fact or historical speculation--doesn't hurt. My description might make the book sound like a hodgepodge, but I think it hangs together well; your mileage may vary, of course.Bennett's goal in FW was to refute the argument that there was a Great Apostasy very early in the Church's history, sometime before 200 AD. In THE APOSTASY THAT WASN'T, he takes aim at another widespread Great Apostasy theory, which argues that the Church syncretized early Christianity with Roman paganism at the time of the Council of Nicaea. In FW, he examined four Apostolic Fathers who were separated by time and physical distance, which made it read like an anthology of four novellas; TATW is much more unified, because Bennett mainly follows one man, Athanasius, who at a certain point seemed to be the only clergyman in the whole of the Eastern Roman Empire not to have fallen for the Arian heresy.I had imagined that the entire text would focus on what happened in 325 at the Council of Nicaea, but in fact Bennett is done with this event about a third of the way through the book, which begins with Antony of Coma during the persecution of Diocletian, and ends nearly a century later with an epilogue featuring Saint Jerome, and introducing Basil, Gregory Nazianzen, and Gregory of Nyssa at relevant points along the way. I found it a truly exciting read: knowing the outcome didn't diminish the suspense at all, and I frequently found myself wondering, "How's Athanasius going to get himself out of THIS one?!" (The answer, of course, tends to be, "By the grace of God.")As with FOUR WITNESSES, I found myself learning something new with every page. I hadn't realized how much of the Arian controversy had occurred after the decision of I Nicaea, or how close Eastern Christianity had come to embracing this heresy, or how much the misunderstandings of Christian doctrine found in Islamic teachings (the Trinity being the Father, the Son, and the Virgin Mary, for example) were influenced by the Arianism that held fast in the Arabian Peninsula even after it had been repudiated everywhere else. I feel like I have a much firmer grasp on the history of the Church and the Eastern Roman Empire during this period. Highly recommended for lay Christians looking to learn something new about their history!CAVEATS:For non-Catholic Christians:-It's written by a Catholic. As a former-Protestant/now-Catholic myself, I don't find him to be very biased; his goal seems to be for every Christian, Catholic or not, to gain familiarity with the Fathers of our common heritage. However, his love for--and faith in--the Catholic Church shines through clearly, and he certainly does not try to hide that he believes the Catholic Church of modern times is one and the same as the Church of the 4th century.-I think Bennett succeeds very well at proving that there was no Great Apostasy. However, this will not convince the vast majority of Protestants who subscribe not to a Great Apostasy but to a "gradual apostasy" theory (my own phrasing) of Why The Reformation Was Necessary. Perhaps Bennett will take on that subject in a later text, but I imagine it would be very difficult to prove satisfactorily, since the goalposts are so easily movable. For non-Christians:-While I wouldn't say reading this text would be entirely unfruitful for you, you are not Bennett's intended audience. He is a Christian writing to acquaint other Christians with their own history, and he makes no effort towards "neutrality" in terms of the truth or falsity, rightness or wrongness of the Christian Faith. I can imagine this bothering me were I not already a believer. For all readers:-Bennett is not a professional historian, he is a history buff with a background in science fiction writing. The transitions between times and places are written like a novel and are heavily speculative regarding historical events, imagined meetings between historical figures, and the inner lives/motivations of those historical figures. Bennett is always very clear when he is speculating, but professional historians and scholars may find themselves annoyed with the liberties taken.-Be sure to read the footnotes for a wealth of extra detail!-The book is excellently sourced, but there are a few quotes missing citations. I know some writers prefer to cite at the end of a paragraph or section, but in a text with such an extensive bibliography I'd prefer a citation on every single quote.-At least on Kindle, the formatting is a bit different from FOUR WITNESSES, in which if I recall correctly Bennett's speculative writing was set off in italics, and direct quotes from primary sources were bolded, leaving only Bennett's factual writing and quotes from secondary sources in regular typeface. TATW doesn't do this, and I found myself longing for the visual cues at times, but perhaps other readers found FW's system distracting.-Is it homoousios, homoousious, or homoüsious? In an otherwise typo-free text, this discrepancy stuck out. Perhaps it was only fidelity to the quoted sources, but it bugged me.-In the end, I'd say both this and FOUR WITNESSES are appropriate as introductions to the Church Fathers, but it really is up to serious people to delve into their writings on their own. For me, having attempted the Fathers before and floundered due to my ignorance of their historical contexts, FOUR WITNESSES gave me the confidence I needed to approach the original texts again, with more success. I hope to do the same with Athanasius, Basil, and the two Gregories when I have some downtime!

This book is recommended because it fits in your back pocket, and it comes with a removable map of Hong Kong Island with Macau. It has a small color subway guide as well. it has sturdy plastic lamination on the cover and jackets. It is perfect for 2-3 days in Hong Kong, and has general recommendations about popular places to visit and eat and stay. It is a fair product to get you around the basic places with good transport information. It is not meant as a comprehensive guide. That is the larger book by Rough Guide.

Rough Guides are never a disappointment, but they also aren't mind blowing in details or information you can't find on TripAdvisor or other sites. Before discovering Moncole Travel Guide Series, I would without hesitation give Rough Guide 5/5 stars.....but then I found Moncole's Hong Kong and it truly deserves the 5 star rating. I like Rough Guide as a supplement to any travel guide I take with us for several reasons. Compact size to throw into a day bag or purse, easy to navigate chapters as they are laid out by neighborhoods, "Best of," and in particular with Rough Guide Hong Kong the key phrases or signs in several languages. This guide also has a very beneficial map that is removable and ideal if you just need a map to navigate the streets of Hong Kong. Mass transit clearly marked, and several new features to this edition make it useful for a first time visitor (such as me) to Hong Kong.

We took this book and the Frommers Day by Day guide to Hong Kong and Macau and basically ended up throwing away the Frommers book. This one was so much better! Great neighborhood maps, suggestions of things to do, explanations of what you are seeing. You can use this to plan your whole trip and get you around the whole time. This, plus a detailed transit map from the hotel was all we needed.

I am a confirmed Kindle user and prefer e-books to printed books whenever they are available (especially for traveling). But guidebooks are one huge exception. Maps are hard to find in a flash and almost always unreadable. Much better to have well-thumbed pages to guide you than to fumble with an e-reader. This is entirely about the medium, not the message. The guidebook itself is fine.

Great little guide to Hong Kong. The size makes it easy to keep in your purse. It also had great information about a number of attractions - although a lot of hotels were missing.

I have been to Hong Kong 3 prior trips, though the last one was 10 yrs ago. I got this book to refresh my memory. That it did, but it also provided tips and places I had not see. Well worth the money.

I used this and the Top 10 guide on our recent trip. This book had the better detailed maps and descriptions although some of the restaurants were out of date.

This guide is definitely a pocket reference, not a definitive guide. It lists many interesting attractions and gives details about them as well. There are a few restaurant and hotel recommendations, but not a lot. This guide would be good as a quick reference, but if you are planning your trip in advance, you may want to look for a more comprehensive guide.

1607: A New Look at Jamestown

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 3–6—In 1994, scientists unearthed important new evidence about the original Jamestown fort. The work is ongoing and has changed many established ideas about the early settlers. 1607 incorporates these findings and offers a fascinating look at archaeology in action. Color photographs of costumed interpreters and re-created buildings from the Jamestown Settlement living-history museum depict both English and Native American ways of life. Varying perspectives of the period are represented, including evidence that suggests that Native women married English settlers and lived at the fort; how the arrival of English women changed the dynamics of the settlement; and the importance of indentured servants versus the relatively small presence of African slaves. Attractive, engaging, and informative, this title should be in every collection.—Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher's School, Richmond, VA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

Just in time for the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement, this well-illustrated volume presents information based on recent archaeology at the site of the original fort. Lange clearly describes conditions in early Jamestown and tells how the recent excavations and other research have shifted historians' perceptions of the colony. She also discusses the Indians who lived in the area before the English settlement began and shows how their views of the settlers changed over the years. The excellent color photos feature interpreters dressed as colonists and Indians in reconstructions of their communities as well as artifacts found at the site of the fort. In conclusion, Lange tackles some controversy, noting "the story of Jamestown is not a comforting one: Indians see nothing to celebrate in the 400th year commemoration." Jamestown has long been overshadowed by Plymouth in America's mythology, but this forthright narrative is a very good place to start learning its significant story. A chronology, source notes, and lists of books and Web sites are appended. Carolyn PhelanCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Well written if brief book on this very early America.

A quality book from a production standpoint. Limited, but very good photographs. However, very little meaningful information provided to support the overall quality of the photographs. I think it would work well for school children. Too small (number of pages) for the price. I returned my copy for a refund.

The story of the Mayflower and the first Thanksgiving is the feel good story of early Colonial America. For the first generation, the Native Americans and English colonists coexisted in a somewhat harmonious fashion. It is not until King Phillip's War that their relationship is radically transformed. On the other hand, the settlement of Jamestown is violent almost from the very beginning. There is the whole Pocahantus narrative which is a nice story but at the same time there is a lot of brutality taking place. To my great surprise "1607: A New Look at Jamestown" is very honest about what took place in the early years of the settlement. This honest treatment of the story in a book addressed to young children is refreshing. In that sense this book is "revisionist". A clear eyed view of American history is not for every parent or child. If you are looking for a more upbeat take on early Colonial history, I would suggest Catherine O'Neill Grace's "Mayflower 1620" or "1621 a New Look at Thanksgiving". Fortunately, my nine year old son is mature enough to understand that American history can have both its good and bad sides. This a beautifully photographed and well written book and I recommend it for anyone who can hold an expansive view of American history.

Good supplement if you are teaching children about Jamestown. The images are well done.

The story of Jamestown is the story of a nation’s birth. The struggle was real, and not one of failures brought about by lazy gentlemen too incompetent and unwilling to work, as erroneously assumed for so long. New archaeological evidence proves otherwise, and National Geographic sets out this information in a beautifully presented volume of research, photography, and illustrations. This is a children’s book, however adults will undoubtedly be captivated, and in some cases shocked, as well.1607 A New Look at Jamestown would be a valuable addition to any home or school library.

In a little under 50 pages, Ms Lange has captured the essence of what life was like in the New World in first decades of the 17th c. She provides an even-handed treatment of Native Americans, the strengths and follies of the English and the terrible ordeals that beset both groups. Her coverage of the most recent findings of archeologists show the misconceptions and biases that have crept into the history books over the ensuing centuries--until now. My 16 year old son used 1607: A New Look at Jamestown as one of his sources for a report in AP US history class, and it was a real eye-opener to him and to me. With wonderful photographs of found relics and recreated scenes, this book brings to life a period and a people who have always taken a back seat to the Pilgrim story. I would highly recommend this book to any parent of a child, pre-teen or teen that shows a curiosity for history. Rather than dumbing-down, Ms Lange dazzles.

When I was growing up in western New York, studying colonial America was about the Pilgrims and Plymouth Rock. It was not about Jamestown, even though the landing at Jamestown occurred 13 years earlier. I learned a lot about Jamestown upon moving to Virginia, and with the 400th anniversary this year, I've learned even more.In recent years, finding text resources about Jamestown that present a true picture of colonization, warts and all, has been hard to find. This situation has changed with the publication of Karen Lange's book, 1607: A New Look at Jamestown. Lange, a journalist and writer with National Geographic Magazine, presents a brief history of the settling of Jamestown using new archaeological evidence to tell the story. The Foreword begins in this fashion:Many people feel that to discover the past, all you have to do is find a book, open the pages, and read a single story. That couldn't be farther from the truth. History is not static: It is not a single story. Simple discovery may only yield you one layer. To really begin to understand the multi-faceted stories that make up our past, you must dig beyond what we think we know. You must discover and then re-discover.This volume takes these words to heart as it reveals the recent discoveries at the Jamestown archaeological site. Supported by an extensive bibliography of primary sources, Lange presents the grim reality that was the founding of this American colony. The narrative describes the settlers' struggles through the artifacts left behind. Color photographs of the dig site, found treasures, and historical reenactment scenes give readers a glimpse of what life was like for those who lived inside the Jamestown fort.Lange does an especially good job of describing how native peoples were living when the settlers arrived, and how their arrival forever changed their way of life. Lange even highlights the response of the Paspahegh (Powhatan) descendants to the planned celebrations to mark the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, noting:"For the Indians, Jamestown is nothing to celebrate. To them, it meant the end of their ancestors' way of life."I was completely enthralled by this book and found myself engaged by the remarkable, yet difficult history presented. Believe me, this is not the standard fare served up in history textbooks. Don't miss this amazing book on a bit of American history you only think you know. I highly recommend it.

I have spent a great deal of my student career as a history major focusing on the analysis of Jamestown. I am now working on my thesis on the subject seeking to understand what the colonists really faced, and how they were, or were not, prepared for their adventure. I have been looking for great sources on the new findings at the archeological site, and I must admit, this is NOT it. Great pictures, but limited content. This is, over all, not a great resource. But if you want something visually appealing to strike up a more in depth conversation, this is your book.
