Mad Seasons: The Story of the First Women's Professional Basketball League, 1978-1981, by Karra Porter

From Publishers Weekly

For a nearly forgotten league that lasted just three years, the Women's Professional Basketball League (WBL) enjoyed a surprising share of good stories, recorded here for the first time. Having represented WNBA players in her law practice, Porter is well-versed in women's basketball past and present, and treats her subject with care. From the beginning of its first season in October 1977, the league was populated by women whose motivation was "love of the game"-unsurprising considering the pay they were (supposed to be) pulling in, but surprising considering their astonishing level of commitment to the chaotic league. Players washed their own uniforms; crammed three or four to a hotel room; traveled long distances to games by van (often driven by their coach); and, of course, were generally paid very little, if at all (by December 1979, Washington Metros players had yet to be paid). Through it all, there was some good basketball played-and some really good players making it happen; WBL stars included Ann Meyers, Molly Bolin, Nancy Lieberman and Carol Blazejowski, some of whom remain in the game as coaches, managers and commentators. Still, Porter's account is largely about the forgotten names, the players who sacrificed so much to advance women's basketball long before the success of the WNBA, and pays fitting tribute to them. Dramatic and insightful, this should please anyone with an interest in the history of hoops. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This book from new author Karra Porter was well worth the wait. It is not a dry history of the oft forgot WBL, but rather an engaging and fun read. The years of research that went into this book is obvious with its detailed accounts and interviews. A true labor of love by a dedicated basketball fan, "Mad Seasons" offers an objective "insider's" look at the rise and fall of this pioneering effort.Fans and women's basketball professionals alike should read this book to see just far we've come and what the phrase "playing for the love of the game" really means.I would, however, have included the unpublished "Media Glare" chapter (see the book's website for more info) rather than the "Snapshots" chapter. While the snapshots are interesting and amusing, media coverage remains a hot issue among fans and I think many would have been greatly interested in it - particularly as it also gives us the history of the first women's college basketball poll.

What would you say about a league that survived for three tumultuous seasons due to players who many times had paychecks bounce higher than the basketballs, a handful of owners who truly wanted to operate a first-rate league and a fandom that came out in impressive numbers for the final championship series?Karra Porter, an attorney who has represented several WNBA players, pens the first history of the WBL, that operated from 1978-1981. It is an important addition to the knowledge of a reader who enjoys exploring basketball history or wants to better comprehend the battle waged in women's team sports to have viable leagues at the professional level.Porter covers every facet of the game - from the front office and hardcourt, to the media and fans - and thoroughly describes the financial stumbling off the court that doomed the product on the court.Ultimately it was the shabby treatment of players that destroyed the league. In the final season, several teams and individuals staged walkouts in protest of not being paid. A showdown between owners who wanted the league to be operated professionally and those who had more shallow verbiage than cash caused a rift that sunk the WBL in a sea of broken promises. But how close the WBL came to making it.At least one NBA owner was interested in investing in an existing team, but watched to see if the league would stabilize financially. The league just missed on what became the sports boom in cable television, when a then regional operation in Bristol, Conn., espn, began its search to show sports 24 hours a day.As much oral history as it is research, Mad Seasons is a great read.

I was in college when the WBL existed - I remember we used to talk about going to see a game when we were home on semester break in D.C. but we never got around to it. The biggest game of the year was always when ODU and Lieberman and Nissen would come to maul our womens team - the gym was packed to beyond capacity and always outdrew the mens game. This is an interesting read with all the funny and poignant stories of a league's startup and also some sad stories, too - well worth it.

This is book is good insight in to the first women's professional basketball league. This is all I wanted to say, but this program is making me type more words.

Devotions and dedication can be such admirable qualities, particularly in an author.Karra Porter certainly has those qualities. She's worked very hard on this history of the Women's Professional Basketball League. The research is evident throughout the book "Mad Seasons," and a peak at a Web site indicates she had been trying to sell the book to a publisher for some time. She found one in the University of Nebraska Press.Books like this really need to be published. Otherwise, parts of sports history would be more or less forgotten. What's more, Porter has done a good job assembling the story, albeit with some flaws. The WBL, as it became known, played from 1978 to 1981. Women's basketball was just starting to catch on in the college ranks, and players had received some publicity. It seemed a natural to give those players a next step, although everyone involved knew there would be obstacles ... mostly in the form of money.New leagues always have money problems. This league's woes were compounded by the fact that there were no professional women's team sports. The WBL was moving into uncharted territory. But the owners, coaches and players pressed on.Porter takes an unexpected approach to the book. Each chapter represents one particular issue surrounding the three-year life of the league. There are stories about starting up, promotion, travel problems, racial matters, stars, etc. Three of the chapters at the end are particularly interesting. There's a tale about the murder of one of the players, the story of an entire team walking off the court in a financial dispute, and a divorce case involving one of the WBL's players that turned into ground-breaking law.Still, it's the funny/sad moments, moments that were sad then but funny now, that are good to read now. For example, New England one time was supposed to play New Orleans in a preseason game, but New Orleans didn't show up. So the Gulls called some members of the New Jersey Gems, who drove up, put on New Orleans uniforms and played the game. It's not like any of the fans knew the difference. The book has a few problems worth noting. There are some good-sized factual errors here that do jump out. It's Julius Erving, not Irving. And it's the Golden State Warriors, not the Oakland Warriors. (A newspaper's mistake got copied.) Ouch, twice. Meanwhile, Porter crams a lot of information into the chapters here, to the point where fewer quotes and more perspective would have been useful.More importantly, there is absolutely no sense of what the leagues were like from a competitive standpoint. Who were the good teams? Who were bad? Who won championships? How did the caliber of play compare with top college ball at that point? A chapter covering the basics about those issues is badly needed here. Failing that, an appendix with season records, statistical leaders and playoff results is absolutely needed and not to be found. In fairness, a Web site is helping to fill some of those gaps now. Those issues somewhat spoil the finished product, which is likely to be the first and last word on the history of the first women's basketball's league. Still, it's nice that the league is remembered. It paved the way for the WNBA on some levels, and it introduced a smaller basketball for the women's game that eventually became a worldwide standard. Porter deserves plenty of credit for making sure that this labor of love saw the light of day.

Very interesting since I was one of the Owners of a team and I mentioned in this book. It brought up a lot of memories and tells the story of how this league was formed and the problems it incurred.

I read this book in two days.I felt that I knew the characters personally, I could see and feel them. The detailed description of characters and scenes, combined with quotes from court documents and letters and blogs made me feel like I was part of the story. The book gave me deep insight into some distressed and hopeful souls that all want to belong and struggle to find their identity as Americans. A powerful cultural dissection that should become part of every school's syllabus. The True American is one of the most moving books I've read in a long time and I believe everyone must read it to understand contemporary American life and its implications for the future of a multicultural society.

This is absolutely a "Food For Thought" novel. While trying to put myself in other's shoes, wonder how I would deal with a situation like this. Part of me would like to think that I could try to forgive, put the anger down and go on with my life. Doing good for someone who has not experienced people doing good for them in their lifetime could possibly change this one person or this person's family and maybe that's the way it should be. One person at a time. Certainly can't deal with the magnitudes. I can understand the feelings on both sides. After 911, U.S. citizens were very angry for the hurt that was dealt to our country and we really didn't know who the enemy was. Good people are in "the mix" and good people get hurt when they weren't guilty at all. It was just random lashing out if we saw someone who looked like they could be the bad guy. Very sad book, but like I said, great food for thought.';

This is an interesting book. It tells the story of a Pakistani man who immigrated to this country and was shot shortly after September 11. He later attempted to show mercy to his attacker who had been sentenced to death for his crimes. It is an important book for this time, when immigrants are under appreciated.

Humbling. Noble. This story has places where it's probably overly detailed (like the whole bull riding accident description at the end seemed way too much for way too little), but I would commend this read to anyone. And if we could somehow come to embrace our faith and embrace others' belief in the way this remarkable young man shows is possible, our planet would be a far more inhabitable and peaceful place and we might actually live up to the moniker of being "civilized."

"The True American" is a superb account by Anand Giridharadas of a homicide/hate crime that transpired in Dallas, TX and how that event crystallized the "cycle of revenge" that - in the words of the Dallas Morning News Editorial Board - "doesn't stop until someone has the courage to say enough." That someone is Rais Bhuiyan, that crime's victim and, ultimately, this story's hero, a man who rose from near death, willed himself to a successful life here in Dallas and offered forgiveness and compassion to his would-be killer. The twist of the book is that the killer, Mark Stroman, had his own moral awakening, brought about, said Ilan Ziv (a documentary filmmaker), "[N]ot because we did anything, but because of who we were. His old world betrayed him, and a new group of people who was more loyal to him than his own family introduced him to our world." It's to the author's extreme credit that you're never entirely sure to which of the two protagonists 'The True American' title applies.I paid special attention to this book because events played out very close to my home here in Dallas. As a northerner with decades living here, I related to this excellent passage describing Dallas' unique and often hard-to-explain charm ("we killed Kennedy," after all -- we're still living that down 50 years on). Of Dallas, Giridharadas says:-----To the outside eye, especially the northern eye, [Dallas] could be dismissed as a gussied-up, diverse, but ultimately narrow backwater...To see Dallas in this way, however, was to bring to it a view that many of its own immigrants, including Rais, didn't share. Enormous numbers of them genuinely loved it, and they continued to arrive by the planeload. They loved, for starters, the sky and the roads and the low taxes that had brought Rais to the city long ago. But it was more than that. A newcomer like Rais could find in Dallas a kind of acceptance that New York or Washington or Los Angeles didn't give...It was a city without elusive codes. You didn't have to wonder how to dress in public, for almost any semi-respectable way of dressing would put you above average; or what knife to use with which course, because that wasn't really how they ate down here; or what subway carried you where, since most people had their own bubble of a car. What many immigrants found in Dallas was a dimension of America's tolerance that was the tolerance of casualness and convenience more than of open-mindedness: an ease of living that became its own kind of welcome.-----I can't tell you how just how trenchantly well-observed that passage is. It speaks volumes as to why such large, vibrant immigrant communities flourish here.

I bought this book for my 7 year old son who is finishing first grade and is just starting to read chapter books (by chapter books, I mean longer ones, not just the "Henry and Mudge" types that can be read in 20 minutes). I love this book! It is like hearing a funny grandpa tell you about his childhood. Mr. de Paola is a good narrator of his own life. My son really got a kick out of some of the antics, like how Tomie behaved while seeing Snow White in the movie theatre. I read the first chapter out loud to my son to make sure he comprehended it. It did, and then he finished the rest of the book himself.I highly recommend this book to any first or second grader. Teachers and parents would enjoy reading it as well.

This story was very heart-warming. I read this to my grandchildren, but I enjoyed it too. I am a little younger than the author, but I remember many of the things he describes. The book is a good way to pass on a knowledge of the way things used to be to our grandchildren.

My son was sick for a few days while the rest of the class was reading this book at school, and we needed to have this book to help keep him up on class and understand what was going on in the story. The book wasn't available anywhere locally, so we ordered from Amazon, and it got here QUICKLY! We were able to get him caught up on his work, and we could also explain the story in a better one-on-one setting than any classroom could do, and he did well.I have to say, the story was also enjoyable for a parent, as it brought back a lot of memories from my childhood. Although I never lived where the story took place, and we didn't have grandparents in the house with us (as is the case in the story), there were a lot of fun perspectives from a child's point of view. Tomie dePaola has a very good writing style, and the artwork is fun, too. I recommend the book for anyone who enjoys childrens' books - especially those books about life in 1938. It would be a superb grandparent-to-grandchild book.

We are huge Tomie dePaola fans here and the 26 Fairmount Avenue series is partially why. My five year old daughter and I read the whole series together and our only complaint is that it doesn't continue. Excellent writing, fabulous illustrations, and you really feel like you get to know little Tomie. Love it!

We read this as part of Build Your Library Grade 1 curriculum. My 11 year old, 6 year old, 2 year, husband and I all enjoyed this as a read aloud novel. Tomie dePaola has always been a favorite author. Reading this quick, light-hearted look at his own childhood was a joy!

Short hilarious chapters make this perfect book for young readers.

This is a lovely story, well written, nicely paced for a 4-6 year olds, and with humor throughout. We read the entire series to our son, and I buy it for nieces and nephews when they are 4 or 5.

Sweet story about Tomie dePaola's life.

Review

Hans Christian von Bayer is well known for explaining the complexities of science to the rest of us, and in this book he lives up to his reputation by taking on one of the most difficult concepts around--information. Starting with his characterization of information as a gentle rain that falls on all of our lives, he leads us through a universe in which information is woven like threads in a cloth. Masterful! (James Trefil, Clarence J Robinson Professor of Physics at George Mason University and co-author of The Dictionary of Cultural Literacy)In Information, physicist Hans Christian von Baeyer sets out to explain why...information is the irreducible seed from which every particle, every force and even the fabric of space-time grows. This is deep stuff, but von Baeyer romps through a huge range of subjects, including thermodynamics, statistics, information theory and quantum mechanics with ease....You will never think of information the same way again. (New Scientist 2003-11-01)Von Baeyer has provided an accessible and engaging overview of the emerging role of information as a fundamental building block in science. (Michael Nielsen Nature 2004-01-01)Delving into the history of science from ancient Greek theories of the atom to the frontiers of astrophysics, [Von Baeyer] shows how the concept of information illuminates a huge variety of phenomena, from black holes to the gamesmanship strategies of Let's Make a Deal...Von Baeyer manages to steer clear of equations without resorting to the hand-waving metaphors that too many science popularizers lapse into when trying to convey difficult ideas. The result is a stylish introduction to one of the most fascinating themes of modern science. (Publishers Weekly 2004-03-01)

From the Inside Flap

Whether TV shows or cell phone and internet traffic, whether encoded in the radio waves that fill the atmosphere or coursing through wires of copper and glass, information, in its electronic form, surrounds us. And equally copious to this is the realm of physical information, that which mediates between reality and our understanding of it. Our senses record and interpret it; our brains manipulate and process it; our genes pass it from one generation to the next; and the need to share it is an attribute common to every member of the animal kingdom. But what actually is information? Can it be analyzed and measured? Why, if information is such an essential ingredient of the world around us, is it not yet part of the vocabulary of physical science? In this exciting, enlightening, and extraordinary book, Hans Christian von Baeyer addresses these and many other questions, revealing how the concept of information can cast light on principles as diverse as thermodynamics in physics and heredity in biology. For, despite its shadowy, paradoxical, and subjective nature, this is a concept of unarguable importance and power, one that could soon become just as central to science as space, time, mass, or energy - if not more so.With a narrative marked out by its clarity and sheer readability, von Baeyer takes us from the roots of the theory through to the coal-face of modern physics and beyond, deftly unpicking the many strands that knit information so tightly into the fabric of the universe. Along the way, he illuminates topics from gaming theory and probability through to black holes, the history of Morse Code, the future of computing and the role of philosophy in contemporary physics - all whileunderlining this emergent and rapidly developing field as the key to a fundamental new scientific language.

#934,853 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is a good book but not a great book. The author does a decent job of laying out all the basic concepts of modern thinking about information: classical concepts of entropy, the Second Law of Thermodynamics, Claude Shannon's revolutionary reformulation of the problem, and modern concepts of qubits. The writing is brightened by some brilliant metaphors and sparkling descriptions. However, it fell short of my expectations in several areas. It made no mention of Maxwell's Demon, a paradox created by James Clark Maxwell around 1870. This thought experiment presented a means by which the Second Law of Thermodynamics could be subverted -- meaning that the Second Law isn't really a law! Now, everybody knew that this couldn't be, yet nobody could come up with a way to kill Maxwell's Demon until 1951, when he was finally done in with a quantum mechanical explanation based on the necessity of the Demon using information to perpetrate his crime against the Second Law. This was a crucial point in the development of our concepts of information -- it demonstrated that the Second Law is fundamentally a "conservation of information" law. Yet this book breathes nary a word of this profound development.Another striking omission was the Uncertainty Principle, the realization that triggered the quantum mechanics revolution and provides the fundamental basis for recognizing information as a finite quantity. This major milestone in the development of concepts of information merits only a passing mention in this book.Another gaping hole was the treatment of biology. There is a perfunctory discussion of genetic information content, but completely missing was any discussion of the biosphere capturing the negentropy (information) from the sun.Lastly, I felt that the explanation of the relationship of entropy to information -- through such concepts as orderliness -- was weak. The author addresses this concept, but instead relies on looser terms such as "form", so the point isn't driven home as clearly as it could have been. Then there are the digressions. The pages devoted to Democritus' atomic hypothesis are, I think, wasted; all readers know about atoms and the material doesn't affect any subsequent discussions. Similarly, the discussions of special relativity and general relativity, while intrinsically interesting, are not germane to the subject at hand and only serve to confuse the reader. And I think that the discussion of Bayes Theorem does nothing to advance the reader's understanding.I think the book is best in its overall presentation of the paradoxes that quantum mechanics created regarding information. The discussion of Schroedinger's Cat (a classic paradox about information and reality) is good, and the detailed treatment of quantum interference is definitely the strongest point of the book. It's also a good point to emphasize, because it feeds into subsequent discussions.Sadly, the discussion of the qubit doesn't illuminate the nature of this truly mysterious concept. I concede that this is a difficult concept to explain without the use of mathematics, but I think that a better job could have been done if the subject had been explained more slowly and thoroughly. In the author's defense, I note that tackling all this without a single equation is quite a feat. He does refer to logarithms, but otherwise he keeps the math out of the picture, most likely at the insistence of his editors. Explaining information concepts without mathematics is like playing a sport with one hand tied behind your back -- it's theoretically possible but impossible to do well. So, would I recommend this book? As always, it depends upon the audience. I would NOT recommend this book to anybody who is already familiar with the basics: Second Thermo, Uncertainty Principle, Shannon, and so forth. Its explanations of the modern concepts (black holes and information, qubits, information as a physical quantity) is inadequate to the needs of a prepared reader.I would, however, recommend this book to the beginner who knows nothing about information theory. If you've heard about this stuff and are curious about the foundations, this is one of the better books to start with. However, if you want to understand the concept of the qubit or how it might be used to build computers, this book won't help.

Like the other reviewer (Frenzen), I also had read von Baeyer's book on thermodynamics, which I felt was a fantastic read. Hence I was excited to see a book on information theory, a natural follow-on topic.Like his previous book, von Baeyer has written a book with no equations, plots, or figures of any kind. Presumably, the idea behind this approach is to appeal to non-technical readers. As a person who knows some math, I found myself wishing over and over again to get just a peek at the equations behind the "talk" to figure out what is really going on. As they say about pictures, "one equation is worth a thousand words." I don't know whether the publishing proverb that "the number of copies sold is inversely proportional to the number of equations" is at work here, but omitting math so completely does a disservice to readers. The goal of von Baeyer's book is to ask, over and over again, "what is information?" In this regard, the book attempts to give nontechnical insight into Shannon's ideas. Next, the book transitions to the truly exciting edge of information, namely, quantum information theory. Since I had only a very vague idea of how qubits work before I picked up this book, I hoped to get some real insight from von Baeyer. Unfortunately, I learned nothing from the presentation. I found no clear and simple explanation as to how qubits work and how they could be used to compute something. The "bead" contest was presumably intended as a "clear as day" explanation, but it was just too much to swallow. Next, we hear about a breakthrough qubit-based algorithm for factoring integers, but there is barely a hint about how the algorithm works. (Is there a Quantum Mechanics for Dummies?)Similar comments can be made concerning how information is lost (or not lost, whatever) when a cup of tea is sucked into a black hole. In this case it isn't the lack of equations that causes confusion, but rather how to appreciate the fact that physicists take seriously the notion that warm-tea-into-the-hole lowers the entropy of the universe. In summary, a 21st century discussion of "what is information, and how might it form the basis for a new physics" is a great topic. But I learned little from this book, and I can only hope that another author will take up this task and move it to the next level of exposition. What would be ideal, is a book that lies somewhere between this book and N. Gershenfeld, Physics of Information Technology, Cambridge. (Nahin: Are you listening?)Final note concerning the Frenzen review: There is nothing "physically...high quality" about this book.

Informative, readable and fun.

I would have happily given this 4 stars but there were WAY too many grammatical errors for such a short book. I don’t normally keep reading a book that has so many errors but I really enjoy this series & I like the story So I forced myself to overlook them. I urge the author to have a/another editor fix the mistakes and resubmit it, ratings would be higher.Mayor of Millerstown has a one-night-stand with an Omega that *surprise* leads to an unplanned pregnancy. The Omega turns out to be someone from his hometown and they run into each other and Harrison discovers he’s going to be a dad soon. Strange things happen to Harrison as well as to Alex and we get to read how they figure out who’s behind it all.*****POV... multi first personStandalone or series... book 4 of series. Can be read as standalone but backstory might confuse you a bit.Hangover... slightRecommend... maybeReread... maybe*****KU readHarrison... Alpha/mayorAlex/Lex... Omega

Alex takes slight advantage when he realizes that his secret crust, Harrison, doesn't realize that he is the grocery store clerk when they meet out of town one night and fulfills Alex's fantasy. Well, as it can happen, that one night left a reminder in a big way and Harrison soon discovers that Lex is Alex and there's a baby on the way. As they seemingly fight some of the town and try to work out their own relationship, both must realize that there is more than just a baby keeping them together.

I would recommend Jena Wade to anyone who loves Mpreg romance. This series is wonderful. I love all of them. A must read.

In Book 4 of the Millertown Moments Series Harrison had just gotten some good news he was just nominated Mayor. To celebrate he ask Alex/Lex to his room. Alex who has had a crush on Harrison said yes. When Harrison woke up in the morning Lex was gone. Seven months later they came face to face. Good read.

It was a wonderful book. I liked the goings on in Millerstown. And just wait till next book. We’ll have Carter. I can’t wait. Thank you for writing this.

I love Jena Wades writing and you can’t beat a good mpreg story with great characters and a little intrigue. A definite recommend!

Being a cradle Catholic, Mary was always a presence in my life. But for all the pretty porcelain statues, I never exactly felt I could relate to her. I could respect that she was the mother of our Lord, but how could I possibly relate to a woman who was born perfect who I had no chance of realistically becoming similar to? Imagine my surprise when one of the women in the book asked the very same question! By taking a nice cross-section of women---various cultural backgrounds, ages and religious fervor--you see that Mary is universal and can offer something unique and personal to whoever approaches her in prayer. There were times when I did cry at some of the points made. One or two of them spoke directly to me in terms of things I'd been praying about but never shared with anyone else. I'm not a mom, so how could I relate to her raising Jesus then following Him to His destiny on Calvary? But the writer makes the point that even those who are childless can act maternally to anyone we come across in a day's time and in essence, bring Christ into the world again. Never thought of it that way! It's not a long book or one with any theological concepts too lofty or sublime. Just some women talking about "our tainted nature's solitary boast" in very real terms. She's not only with the saints in Heaven, but in her maternal love for us, reaches out to us to bring our hearts and minds not to her, but to her Son. What a comforting thought! You will definitely enjoy this book and I know I will be going back to it again and again.

I am not a Catholic, but I have a passion for spiritual books, and Moyer's Mary and Me has earned a permanent place on my "inspiration" shelf. While solidly based in the Catholic faith tradition, the book does not have a theological agenda. Moyer fully and clearly explains spiritual terms and Biblical stories, making the book accessible to a wide range of readers. Her language is fresh and lively and the personal stories are moving; in fact, I couldn't put the book down and read it in one sitting.Moyer has asked an honest question of real women: "What has Mary meant to you?" She has not used the interviews to argue a point; rather, she has gathered the stories, listened to their messages, and let the stories themselves decide the structure, form, and message of the book. The Mary that emerges is rich and complex. The Mary that women come to know through the challenges, traumas, and joys of their lives is not the beatific image of the Renaissance portraits. As one women says, "She is a strong-willed, courageous women who defied convention and did the will of God." Another says, "Mary was a human being, a real women, a mother and a mother who suffered the ultimate loss."The women who Moyer interviews share their most intimate stories: abusive parents, career crises, health issues, lost loves. And Moyers presents the tales of spiritual struggle and transformation with great tenderness and respect. In many places, I found myself moved to tears.Moyer's language is snappy and appealing; at the same time, she masterfully transitions between her personal stories and analysis and the voices of the women she has interviewed. The two blend seamlessly.Mary and Me is a satisfying, entertaining, touching, enriching read.

I really enjoyed the stories in this book. It would be a great gift for friends. It’s also a nice, easy read and very relatable.

Maybe Mary and Me won't be your cup of tea. Maybe you don't even really "get" the whole Mary thing...and you'd be in good company. This book is filled with reflections and insights from Catholic women, some of whom weren't always big fans of Mary. The author herself shares some reflections that had me laughing and grabbing the tissues. In my world, there's a huge value to things that make me consider life differently. I don't always agree with the things that force my different perspective, but I do value them. It's one of the reasons why I so value my relationships with the friends in my life I can disagree with without the tingling in my scalp that signals anger and frustration.I found this sort of value in Mary and Me. I also found new insight into the role of the Blessed Mother in my own life.Consider suffering, for example - I often turn to Mary when I'm in pain, but I have only ever been able to articulate it vaguely. "Well, she was at the foot of the Cross," I'll reason in my head...and though I know that wasn't an easy thing to do, it seems sort of lame. This book is one I'll lend out, though, be assured I'll be keeping track of who has it, because I know I'll be turning back to it. It's also the sort of book I'll be purchasing for friends...because I can think of quite a few women who need the wisdom, comfort, and insight that's included. You don't have to be Catholic to appreciate that God's mom loves you. You don't have to be a "Mary freak" to smile at the company of another woman's shoulder in times of challenge and pain. You don't have to be a big reader to make it through this relatively short book.

About the Author

Greg Borzo, whose first home was a few steps from the "L," enjoys riding it almost every day and gives history tours of several "L" lines. Formerly the editor of Modern Railroads magazine, he is now a science writer at Chicago's Field Museum. To tell the story of this celebrated transit system (including a look at its precursors), Borzo draws on some 240 captivating photographs, drawings, and maps. Most of the images were culled from the Chicago Transit Authority's vast photograph archives; others were gathered from libraries, museums, schools, vendors, and individuals across the country. Ride with him through time over one of America's greatest urban treasures, this massive 19thcentury structure of riveted steel that serves as one of Chicago's major circulatory systems, pulsing from the heart of the Loop out into the surrounding neighborhoods and suburbs.

I happen to be a railroad fan and grew up in Chicago. I have taken the "El" all over Chicago so for that reason I found the book exceptionally interesting. I read it in only two and a half days. I'm sure that this book can be expanded on and I would love to see such a book but this book is probably as good a basic story of the "El" as any. One thing that makes the book as good as it is of course is all the pictures. They are great.

Rode the L all the time for the 1st half of my life. This book is a fantastic look into the creation and growth of the Chicago L system. The book is not much on nostalgia- as it is mainly set in the old days, but fascinating read for history and if you love trains.

Mainly a great photo collection, but the text does provide a context for the pictures and a brief narrative of the various L routes in Chicago. Great resource for those researching the design of early L structures and the L's development along with Chicago in the 20th century.

Very interesting and great old time pictures. This was an excellent history of the L and the routes it traveled. I especially enjoyed the old pictures of the North Shore cars.

Great gift for my best friend who grew up in Chicago in the 1950s and 60s. He absolutely loved it!

For anyone interested in the topic of urban public transportation, this book is a must. If you are from Chicago, you have likely ridden the "L" at some point in your life. This book gives you the entire history of the "L"s development and is loaded with great photos and maps. It includes information on all the various "L" lines including those that have been discontinued. Get this while its in print or you will be sorry you missed it.

Very well written and researched!

I was looking for a good photographic book about the Chicago "L". Not only about historical subjects but even up-to-date images of everyday service. This book totally satisfied me for the first search, a little less for the second. But I think this work is a must for everybody who's interested in public transportation, focused or not on Chicago "L", as it shows how urban transits can fit in an urban context and how they can modify it.
