Zaha Hadid, a native of Baghdad, grows up admiring nature and patterns. She designs her own clothes, wonders at the ruins in her homeland, and dreams of designing cities. "Zaha has ideas." Zaha studies math, then leaves home to study architecture in London. She then sets to work planning and designing what the world has never seen: buildings conceived after the shapes and patterns of nature. Working past the initial rejection and discrimination she faces, Zaha grows her firm from one room to an entire building. Eventually, her designs are built all over the world. Her architects continued "making models of her visions" even after her death, which is gently portrayed in this book for young readers. The illustrations in this portrait are fresh and spare, highlighting the concepts behind Zaha's designs. As in Winter's other picture books, the use of color, shape, and pattern in the artwork pairs beautifully with the straightforward text to tell this intriguing story. As an elem art teacher, I’m alwayd looking for artists other than white men to teach about. I was so excited to see a book I could share with my students about Zaha Hadid! The story was simple and the big ideas about her thinking were clearly presented in a way for my 2nd graders to grasp and get excited about. They LOVED this book and so did I!
The text is simple yet meaningful and the pictures are thought-provoking. I’m so happy I purchased this one. I’m always on the lookout for books about women in unexpected roles and about people around the world. This hits both.
Beautifully written and inspiring to my second grade students. I only wish that pictures of the real buildings she designed were included in this book. My students asked to see pictures of the real structures and once I looked them up, we saw how incredible they truly are.
Love this book
This simple and beautiful picture book deserves far more than the two stars given to it by a previous reviewer. Jeanette Winter is well known for her biographies. I had never heard of Zaha Hadid before I read this book but I grabbed it right away when I saw it in the library's New Book section. I immediately read it to my homeschool co-op as part of our Physics block. The children commented on the similarities between her story and Galileo's. Both were visionaries who saw the world in a new way and people reacted to them negatively in the exact same way... even though the stories take place hundreds of years apart.This book is wonderful and should be in any elementary or middle school classroom. It is a multicultural book which supports a study of famous women. It is an art book. It is a science and mathematics book. It is a philosophical book about respecting all people. The illustrations are lovely and really show the connections between her work and the natural world which inspired the designs. The singer in the opera house, as the pearl in the oyster, and the buildings which sway like grass in the wind. The bridge which imitates the motion of the waves. The museum built into the side of a mountain. My students from ages 6 to 13 were entranced by this book. It will tie in well with many classroom topics over the years. Don't hesitate to snap this one up.
Very low resolution! I'm an architectural designer and I don't like the author's interpretations to Zaha Hadid's design. Maybe I'm thinking too much, but I don't want my son thinks architectural design is just imitation of natural forms. The graphics could be better. (Sorry!)
A picture book biography of Zaha Hadid, an architect who was born in Iraq, moved to London, and let nature inspire her award-winning creations rather than traditional lines and corners.I've never heard of Zaha Hadid before. Not many women architects get noticed at all, so she is definitely worthy of note. Her unique background and her unconventional designs are fascinating too. The text in this is simple as is the illustration style somewhat, but both are effective in conveying her story. There are quotes from Zaha in the back of the book as well as a little more info on her. Recommended for career day reads, those who like inspirational reads about women, and those who like reads about people not afraid to think outside the box.
This is an intriguing and much-needed nonfiction biography for any age. Innovative, rule-breaking, determined Zaha fully embodied her as name- Hadid=iron. The minimalist, artfully placed text suits the conceptual nature of her architectural and other design visions, and the anchoring reference points in back matter, including extensive sources, are as solid and stable as her architectural visions. This is a perfect example of why themed months are such an inadequate approach to making the facts and inspiring stories of every gender, ethnicity, and heritage a part of daily literacy throughout the year. For anyone seeking to strengthen STEM- STEAM development, especially with young girls, this is must-have.
