Early in my reading of Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods," I found myself thinking, "I should walk the Appalachian Trail!" A few chapters later, after learning of Bryson's hiking, sweating, and chafing experience, all I could think was, "Screw that. I'll stay indoors, thank you very much."I had a similar experience reading Jesse Itzler's informative, inspiring and hilarious fitness memoir, "Living with a SEAL."Itzler is a compulsively motivated human being who has achieved crazy success in entertainment, business, and fitness (to say nothing of marriage) by doing things others haven't thought of, view as contrarian or consider bat-shit insane. (is "bat-shit" hyphenated?)In LWaS, Jesse recounts the intense, month-long training hell he brought on himself by inviting a real-life Navy SEAL to live with him and his family. Early in the book I was thinking, "...maybe I should turn up the heat on my workouts and push the limits of my mind and body." Then I read about Jesse's torn muscles, hypothermia and bloody nuts (yes, those kind of nuts), and thought, "naaahhh."Indeed, Jesse holds back none of the grueling details involved in training with one of the world's most elite warriors and the marital complexities that arise when you host him in your family's apartment.Like SEAL, Jesse has one speed: 110% x 24 x 7. He's also a little bat-shit insane and a really funny writer. If you're into fitness and/or crazy people, you'll love Living with a SEAL.

First, the negative. I'm not crazy about Itzler's writing style. He tries too hard to be funny and a lot of the attempted humor doesn't work for me. But here is what I DO like about Itzler's perspective in this book: like the rest of us, Jesse is clearly, joyfully in awe of David Goggins.I'm a pretty crappy long distance runner, and when I first heard of Goggins I found it impossible to process his list of achievements. This guy makes the runners I know and admire seem as inept as I am. Reading his list of accomplishments is more like reading about a super hero than about an athlete. After a while it all runs together, just one jaw dropper after another. Any mere mortal would probably spend the rest of his life crowing about it if he had done even one of the things Goggins has done. Instead of bragging, David Goggins just moves on to the next challenge and crushed it (usually as part of a fundraising benefit for good causes). It is hard to conceive of anyone having this combination of strength, confidence, endurance, and patience. The book does humanize Goggins. He does share some of the flaws of lesser men. He is profane, he can be moody and unfriendly, and he carries a darkness wirh him. This isn't Superman. This is a human being, like anyone else, who just happens to be capable of super feats. On his Instagram page, David has made reference to a book he is writing. I'll buy it the day it is published. In the meantime, this book will do. Jesse Itzler is a David Goggins fan, like many of us. He just happens to be a fan who's life was transformed over a month he spent with the SEAL himself. The book is imperfect, but anyone who admires David Goggins should read it.

I've been working a lot on "mindset" this year. My biggest takeaway was the idea that when you think you're done, you're not. I've applied this philosophy to my workouts and have been striving to do 40% more reps, reminding myself that although I may feel done physically, that's just my mind telling me to stop. It works! This book is hilarious, but beware the bad language. I didn't realize my daughter was looking over my shoulder and I heard "mommy, is that book real?" Me: Yes. "Mommy, what's a motherf***er?"

After reading David Goggins' book (the SEAL who is talked about in this book), this book is very irritating. Calling David Goggins' "SEAL" for the whole story is frustrating. Also, after reading David Goggins' book and listening to him speak on podcasts, some of the things the author quotes him saying and doing are absolutely not Goggins' style, which leads to me believe an ample amount of artistic license was used here. It was great to read about the author's insane fitness experiment though. It would have been just and cool without the exaggeration.

I loved this book! Read it in less than 2 days then bought a copy for my brother-in-law. I've read my fair share of self-help, improve yourself books... but this one got me to take action. Seriously... around chapter 4 I put the book down and went for a 4 mile run. That may not seem like a big deal, but I hadn't been out for a run in well over a year!My take away from the book - "What you think you're capable of is actually only about 40% of what you are truly capable of" (paraphrasing).

Reading this is like living with the most motivational human alive. No self help book out there has done for me what this book has given me. There is no preaching, and no self-help talk. NONE. There is a "just do it" attitude and they sure do it amids blood, sweat, freezing temperatures, lack of sleep, hectic schedule, anywhere and everywhere. No if or buts, "Motherf..." lol. I had to add that in. The guy curses like a sailor, but it's very fitting given the extreme lengths they go.. In the end even the author ends up talking like a sailor. Fun and incredibly inspiring. HIghly recommended.

Easily one of the best books around. I got around to it a bit late in life I feel like but better late than never. First and foremost, the main character Alex is the biggest draw in. His attitude of trying to get what he wants by any means necessary regardless of who it hurts is something that makes a unique and interesting protagonist. The language of the book is also very well crafted, pretty sure I'm going to be calling milk "moloko" for the rest of my life now. The way the book speaks on juveniles is fascinating to think about and the way it can apply today years after this book been published. I've met all kinds of kids who were up to the wrong things and how they were handled after they got caught and this book really goes into that. It makes you think, "can people like 'Alex' really be corrected from there ways on immediate apprehension or do they simply grow out of it?" Any book that makes you ask big questions about the world around you is clearly a good read. This book is very "adult" and I can't recommend it to anyone that is too young. I would say maybe high school age is the youngest someone should read it.Bought both the Hardcover and Paperback editions. Really like the hardcover because it looks exactly like the original version that was published when the book first came out. Paperback is fine but the material is very thin and slippery. So point being, it's an easy tear if you're not too careful.

Whether or not you consider this a nihilist novel all depends on whether you read the final (21st) chapter, which was omitted from the novel’s American edition when it was originally published. Then again, even after reading the 21st chapter, whether or not you consider this a nihilist novel could depend on your interpretation of that final chapter (sincere? ironic? deceptive? unreliable?).This intentionally ambiguous conclusion tops off the careful structure of the novel, which is divided into three sections, with the first and third providing mirrored bookends to the center section. In the first section, Alex (or Your Humble Narrator) and his droogs (who all speak a slang vernacular called Nadsat) wreak havoc among their community—attacking and beating a library patron, committing robbery, rape, and other heinous crimes. In the second section, Alex—after being arrested and imprisoned—undergoes a radical form of rehabilitation that conditions him against violence. In section three, Alex is released from prison after having been allegedly cured of his violent disposition. He then encounters all the victims of the crimes he committed in the first section. Throughout, Alex comments on the vapid meaninglessness of the world—his response to which will inform your understanding of the novel’s central themes, which in turn depends upon that final chapter. This novel has earned its reputation as a contemporary classic, if a book published more than 50 years ago can be considered contemporary. Its profundity eclipses its brief length (barely more than 200 pages); nihilistic or not, *A Clockwork Orange* confronts you with frightening questions about the human capacity for violence and human nature itself.

A Clockwork Orange is Anthony Burgess's most famous novel, though you'll quickly find out that it isn't his favorite. This book has been the basis for some highly iconic scenes in cinema, and it's easy to see why it's such a famous book. The story takes place is run-down version of London, following Alex, a gang leader whose two loves are gratuitous violence and classical music. After a robbery gone bad, Alex ends us a test subject for a new treatment to turn bad men good.Burgess has developed a style on his own to write this book. The novel uses a massive amount of future slang that is at first super confusing. But after a few paragraphs, you'll be able to figure out what everything means. It certainly makes for an interesting experience. The introduction for this edition is also notable, in that it directly calls attention to the novels main flaw. Like I said, Burgess himself doesn't like this book that much, citing the fact that he felt his themes of free will and morality were to heavy handed. And they are. But I feel like the book is worth reading in spite of that.

A Clockwork Orange is a classic novel at this point. I absolutely love this work of Anthony Burgess, as dark and twisted as it is. It is clearly full of social commentary, but the story does not get bogged down by it nor do I ever feel that it gets preachy. I personally really appreciate that the author does not insult his readers' intelligence and baby us through what every piece of the story's intrinsic deeper meaning is. He rather, lets it slowly unfold through the exciting events of the story and whether you grasp it or not is left up to you.The language used develops within the story itself and can take a minute to warm up to. The slang that Burgess invented for this novel is not explicitly defined for the reader and some of these words can take a few uses to catch on to, or did for me at least. This is a book to buy, not just borrow from the library or a friend because it gets better and the meaning deeper with each re-read. It is one that I have had since high-school and still go back to every few years and get something else out of it.**Trigger Warning/Content Warning** This book does contain ultra-violence and one scene is of a sexually violent nature. For me it was certainly not enough to negate the overall experience of the novel, but for some who are exceptionally upset by this it may be.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-In Doctor Maisy, the little mouse and Nurse Tallulah take care of a sick Panda, "Oh, no. Panda has a fever." When Maisy and Tallulah bump into one another, the nurse has to bandage the doctor's sore nose. In Morning on the Farm, Maisy milks the cow, "Squish squish, squirt squirt"; feeds the pigs and chickens; and then has her own breakfast. Toddlers will be attracted by Cousins's bright, friendly illustrations and simple texts. These two titles are sure to be popular with Maisy fans everywhere.Kathy M. From Booklist

Reviewed with Lucy Cousins' Maisy's Morning on the Farm.Ages 2-4. Maisy, the friendly little rodent now seen on TV, stars in two little stories. Kids will these enjoy the simple, though slight tales and the brilliantly colored illustrations. In Doctor, Maisy dons a white coat and ministers to Panda with stethoscope and thermometer. Morning shows Maisy at work on the farm: driving a tractor; feeding the chickens, pigs, and sheep; and milking the cow. According to copyright information, the books are based on a Maisy audio-visual series, and the gouache paintings are "illustrated in the style of Lucy Cousins." The derivation of books won't matter to little ones, though. They'll simply enjoy revisiting an old friend. Carolyn PhelanCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

#6,600,789 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

let me start by saying we love maisy! we have a million of her books, but this one is LAME. pages: tallulah checks maisy's heart, maisy checks panda's heart, mais takes panda's temperature, maisy carries pandar upstairs, maisy puts panda to bed, maisy runs back downstairs, maisy crashes into tallulah, tallulah wraps maisy's nose, and everyone is better. upon a nervous toddler's visit to the doctor for a checkup, i really wanted something about what a doctor's visit would look like-- yes the heart check and temperature taking, but also getting weighed and measured, or looking into their eyes and ears, checking their reflexes maybe, and possibly even getting a shot (you can always skip over that page if need be)... and then she gets a sticker or lollipop at the end. that would have been a better doctor maisy book. this whole side story of running down the stairs "not too fast maisy!" and crashing, and then being bandaged up by a friend didn't really cut it.

I ordered two Maisy books in hopes I could use it as supplementary tools to help my toddler be more aware of certain life events children go through (doctor visits and starting school). This book is not that kind of book.I can’t fault a book for hoping that it would be one of those informative books that provide a lesson for kids. However, the storyline was just blah. I mean, maisy plays hospital with her friend Tallulah and all they do is listen to a heart beat and then run into each other and bandage each other up. It’s probably one of the most disappointing stories I’ve read to my daughter. There are so many good children’s books out there..it’s just sad to read ones like this.On a side note, my daughter is not the same as me when it comes to books. She loves Maisy, which is why I’ve given it 3 stars.

This story has Maisy playing hospital. My class of toddlers requests this daily. The simple illustrations and repeat of characters throughout the series makes it a favorite choice. "Maisy Drives the Bus" or "Maisy goes to Preschool" are both good introductions to most of Maisy's" friends". This is not a series geared to a specific gender, but it's about the story - the interaction/events of Maisy. Holds the interest of boys and girls. The gentle drop of a lesson in each book provides the opportunity of more discussion. In this story Maisy runs down the stairs and gets a bump. Her friend is there to help her.

Our 3 year old loves the Maisy series. He looks forward to any of his "Lucy Cousins" books. The pictures are super colorful and the words are simple. They are good books to read often since children can begin to memorize the words and anticipate the story. A good step in reading development. Also the books are appropriate and don't have negative elements, for example characters hitting each other or being rude to their parents. It is amazing how many books out there contain characters that are rude, disobedient or hurtful.

My grandson's new favorite book series. The text is always simple an short; the pictures are bright and lovely. Any toddler will love!

Great book. Simple for younger kids. I was looking for a book to prep my one year old for a hospital stay. While this didn't address a hospital specifically it introduced doctors, stethoscopes, etc, and the concept of being check up. I swear it helped his brother also who was crying whenever he went to the pediatrician, now he doesn't anymore!

My 2 1/2 year old loves Maisy and all the books we've read to her so far. We bought this one to help get over her fear of doctors. Although the plot takes an interesting turn that doesn't make much sense towards the end, my daughter still enjoys this book. She even imitates some of the actions that Dr. Maisy does in the book. She is not as afraid of doctors as she used to be thanks to a combination of this book plus her Doc McStuffins toys.

I got this book for a little girl I babysit who is turning two to go with some other toys, particularly a "vet" set with a stethoscope and other medical tools. I wanted something to teach her about the doctor, give her positive associations, and perhaps suggest some ways she could use her new toys to play with her stuffed animals and dolls. I think this book is great for all three. My only concern is that the pages will quickly get torn or bent, but they are made of a nice, thick paper that I hope will hold up to the handling of a toddler.
