The 18th century has long been revered for its attention to lavish detail, particularly in clothing. This stunning volume makes a great coffee table book for textile art admirers, but is much more than that for serious costumers or advanced historical clothing reproducers looking for rich little extras to add to items. What it is: up-close, crystal clear photos of details otherwise missed in museum photos such as lace, cuffs, buttons, woven and painted silks. What it is not: an overview of entire garments (a drawn outline of the full item is included with the text for each photo, but no more than that). If you are looking for this book to reproduce a complete item of clothing, you will be disappointed, but if you're looking for great photos of those tiny details that dry museum websites miss, this should be a delight. As a librarian and historically-inspired seamstress, I highly recommend you try borrowing 18th-Century Fashion in Detail through Interlibrary Loan before purchasing -- I did so first and have now bought my own.
