For a list of reasons, anxiety being at the top, my soon to be 6th grader did not perform well the second half of 5th grade. He says he hates school and his reluctance to do school work backs up his statement. I gave these a go hoping to catch him up on some topics, or at least keep school skills in practice. He had all kinds of drama about being "forced by mom" to do summer work. However, I walked him through this book showing him the design. It is not overwhelming! Short stories, short vocabulary lists, one sentence (not 10 like school) and one page of comprehension questions. It appeared "doable" to my reluctant child (He is bright, but overly anxious about any writing task). The first day was dramatic getting started, but the stories are entertaining and we saw some reluctance give way. He now does 2 stories per day during and after breakfast. Great project for my reluctant kid!!!!
Such engaging stories. I have another in the series for a different age group in science. I by far enjoy the humor and twists to this book the best. Ruth, please keep up the wit and make more! My child loves reading these. Nice to have the child engaged in reading -- and learning!I am using this for a child in a younger grade. Not too hard to read. I purchased it because I read the "look inside" pages and knew my kid would love it even if it was labeled above grade level.
This book is truly written for kids to learn. There is no element of religion and political ideology. It is purely knowledge based book of American History and Literature with smack of world cultures and science. What a relief from the nonsense being shafted down our kids' throat at the public school.
Wow. I bought these to supplement my homeschooling. Thought id though in social studies this grade level. These stories are wonderful. It is a front page story and back page questions like maybe 6 questions. All true factual stories and very entertaining. I bought for my 2 grade level kids BUT had to share each others with one another because the stories are wonderful. I love these books, and it would make great bedtime stories for kids. Please grab yourself a copy you will not regret it.Vanessa
Love it. Very thankful I stumbled across this workbook!! I've been homeschooling for 3 years and this is BY FAR my favorite social studies curriculum! I would highly recommend it. The stories are engaging and. have led to so many great conversations and deeper research. I plan on continuing to buy more volumes.
I went through the 3-4 grade version of this book with my daughter and immediately bought the 5th grade version when we finished.The stories are interesting and tend to focus on unique information about historical events and people. They're packed with info without feeling dry. Each story is only one page long, and the questions are clearly written. They cover different aspects as well, such as main idea, details, and vocabulary.I love that we can work on comprehension and learn about history at the same time, in a fun and interesting way. Highly recommend. I only wish the series went into higher grades!
Great book for my homeschooler Not too much questions or reading to overwhelm but enough for them to read and understand .For example the story: A SPY IN AMERICA would have maybe a list of 6 words and the child will pick one of the words and write a sentence.(Thats one page.The second page will be the story.The third page will be the questions about 8 or so .
Cover some of the non fiction events that even I didn't know about. Great for extra activity study guide.
