Review

Praise for The Shadow and Bone Trilogy: "This is what fantasy is for.” ―Laini Taylor for The New York Times on Shadow and Bone“Set in a fascinating, unique world rich with detail, Shadow and Bone was unlike anything I've ever read. Alina is a clever, sympathetic character I will gladly follow into the next installment―which can't come soon enough!” ―Veronica Roth, New York Times–bestselling author of Divergent, on Shadow and Bone“Filled with lush descriptions, intriguing magic, and plenty of twists, this memorable adventure offers action and intrigue mixed with an undercurrent of romance and danger.” ―Publishers Weekly on Shadow and Bone“A heady blend of fantasy, romance, and adventure.” ―Rick Riordan, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of the Percy Jackson series, on Siege and Storm“A well-drawn world, full of deceit and mythology, populated by entirely believable characters. Full of truly surprising twists and turns, beautiful imagery and a protagonist it's impossible not to root for, this is a great choice for teenage fans of George R.R. Martin and J.R.R. Tolkien.” ―RT Book Reviews on Shadow and Bone"If opener Shadow and Bone was a magical coming-of-age story and middle-volume Siege and Storm was a political thriller, then this third book is an epic quest. . . Every time readers may think she's written herself into a corner, Bardugo pulls off a twist that, while surprising, will keep them turning pages furiously.” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review, on Ruin and Rising

This has a really creative world and some potential, but the characters are all underdeveloped and the storyline is very predictable. The bad guy in this story is over a hundred years old, but behaves like a teenager and treats the main character (Alina - a teenage girl) like a peer throughout the entire series and changing relationship between the two. This isn't even considering their age difference, he's in the upper class and pretty much second to the King in their country while she's a grunt (orphan) in some army. No matter the situation, Alina and The Darkling interact unrealistically and either extremely casually without taking any kind of social pragmatics/culture/rank into consideration, or like a parody of any villain in pop culture. He reminded me of Kylo Ren from Star Wars. It's so awkward. It is like they're a couple of classmates in the same school no matter the situation, which gets more and more frustrating after the first book.Mal also is very underdeveloped and we don't know much about him other than Alina and him grew up like siblings in the same orphanage, and are best friends.... and (still unrealistically) he's also a love interest that is also very invested in the main character. Other than that "he's very good at tracking people." Okay. How lucky for Alina! He's so bland, he has very little backstory, faults, or anything that would make you otherwise feel anything toward him whatsoever. This series left me wanting more, but not in a good way.

5 Stars for how nice the books are and how nicely packaged they are. Nice Poster!Shadow & Bone: 4.0 out of 5 stars.Siege & Storm: 4.2 out of 5 starsRuin & Rising: 3.9 out of 5 stars.I thought this trilogy was a good time. Great world building, good characters, cool magic system/abilities. I recommend this trilogy. Especially if you plan on reading Six of Crows which was amazing. Sets the world up nicely. The ending to this trilogy was satisfying enough. What I didnt like:The main character Alina is pretty weak and almost useless through the entire trilogy. Despite having this "epic" ability she never really does anything with it. Someone always has to save the day, every single time. It got frustrating by book 3.Be ready for a Deus Ex Machina to save the main characters EVERY TIME they are in a hopeless situation, some random person or event saves them and it was always predictable. The Villain was very strong but chose the dumbest way to accomplish his goals. Someone so powerful could have come up with atleast 3 other solutions that were better than what he tried to do.I wish this was a Duology instead of a trilogy. A little more action in each book would have helped.

I've been a lifelong reader of fantasy/science fiction (along with most everything else). JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis, Stephen R Donaldson have been favorites to name just a few. I had become leery of just randomly picking a new fantasy book by authors I wasn't familiar with because the results have been, well... less than I had hoped. But Leigh Bardugo is a definite KEEPER! I love her story telling. Her characters are well developed, complex, and human. The heroes are imperfect, and her villains are not entirely evil, either. She really gets into their heads and hearts and we get to see why they do what they do and how they became who they are. Her plotting is top notch and the 'Grisha' concept she has created is unique and refreshing. If you're a fantasy fan and are looking for a new author to read, look no further. I raced through this trilogy, and immediately downloaded "Six of Crows". I'm halfway through it and am loving it just as much! 5 Stars! Others have remarked that this is more geared to 'young adult' - I'm 57 and loved every minute.

Arrived super fast. The packaging was great, too.The books are fine, and no missing page or badly printed ones. The poster is amazing. The only bad thing was the damaged box of the books (see: photo), but it's not a huge problem for me anyway. The story is absolutely amazing and recommend to anyone interested in magic. :))

In my lifetime I have probably read over two thousand books by so many different authors in so many different genres. I have NEVER re-read any book.....until The Shadow and Bone trilogy. And I may just read it a third time,

It was kind of shallow, but in a weird way. The wo eh l building was great but I had no concept of the main character. Who is she? What motivates her? What's her internal life? Who is she when shes just herself by herself? No clue, except shes so freaking PASSIVE. Every action she takes is something she does because someone else told her to. Blech

This is a world you can sink your teeth into, that you can get lost in. The entire cast of characters were complex, you feel for even the villains. I don't know how I waited so long to read this. You shouldn't wait either. Be prepared to feel a lot of emotions about this series and to devour it quickly. Can't wait to read the other books in the Grishaverse!

The Grishaverse is an expansive, Tolkien-esque experience, wrapped in layers of political intrigue, expansive settings, languages and a rich cast of supporting characters. The Darkling is a divine antagonist. But there's a reason all the fan art features an alternate ending. Alina and Mal seemingly survive with no real consequences and fall utterly short of their companions. However, everything else Leigh Bardugo has written to expand on the Grishaverse is solid gold and I can't wait for a continuation on her Six of Crows series.
