Pam MacKay teaches population and environmental biology, botany, microbiology, and tropical natural history courses at Victor Valley Community College in Victorville, California. She is involved in Mojave Desert conservation efforts, and has been instrumental in founding the new Mojave Desert Chapter of the California Native Plant Society where she currently serves as Field Trip Chair. She serves as a volunteer naturalist for the Golden Trout Natural History Association, leading hikes and natural history workshops in the backcountry of the southern high Sierra. Pam has a Master of Science degree in biology from Cal Poly Pomona and is also enrolled in a doctorate program in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California at Riverside. Her favorite past-times include hiking, backpacking, and photography.

I have the printed version and wanted to have the digital on my iPad. I was really looking at getting a version that I could use more places. What a total disappointment. The index has page numbers, but there are no page numbers in the body of the book. So you have to scroll through the sections to try and find the flower you are looking for. In addition, the digital images of the flowers are no where near the quality of the printed version.

I had traveled to Death Valley in mid March 2016 for the Super Bloom. I photographed every flower I cam across, and probably missed a few. Then was time to identify them. I saw this book on Amazon, and thought it the best of all the desert flower books offered, and downloaded it to my Kindle. I believe all but one of the flowers in Death Valley I was able to identify. The book is divided into sections according to colors, each flower is noted to its blooming season, habitat and range. The introduction tells about the Mojave Desert, topography, soils, past and present vegetation, past human use of the different tribes known to the area, early explorers, history. Even what makes the colors of the flowers. Oh, gosh, way too much to tell here. If you're ever going to take a trip to the desert, especially in the spring or fall when these flowers are blooming, you've got to take along this book. The photos are in color and top quality, in my opinion. I know what's on my itinerary for a future road trips back to the desert and I won't go without this book.

This is a great book for identifying desert wildflowers. It is one of the most complete books out there. The book is color coded to make flower identification easy. The one downside to this book is the photos are low rez. Some of the pictures are very clear but many need to be redone. As you get out into the field you will figure out that you need 2 books, photos you took your self and the Internet to correctly identify many of the flowers. There are a lot of flowers that look similar so you need to look at many different aspects of the plant to correctly identify it. The text is great with clear plant details, habitat, as well as bloom seasons. I found this book to be very helpful.

I bought this before a road trip to the Mojave Desert. It is arranged by colors of the blooms of the flowers. There is also a section on green and brown shrubs. I like the size for traveling but would have found it more useful if it had a spiral binding. The index is good and there is a chapter with good explanations of plant parts. I was able to use this book to learn more about desert plants and to identify some of the plants I came across.

This is not only a beautiful book, it's also the best that's yet available for identifying Mojave Desert vegetation and wildflowers. The plant descriptions and comments are exceptional and it provides alternative and often confusing local names for many species. If it had included additional photos showing the various plants when they're not in bloom, I'd have given it five stars.

This is great book! Very easy to follow and read as it is color coded. The information is decent enough for amateur botanist enthusiastic hikers out on the mojave

This is a very handy field guide. The photos are crisp, bright and modern and the descriptions are thorough. I like the size of the book, too. It is sturdy and compact, as a field guide should be.

My husband is a geologist so I spend tons of hours every year photographing flowers on our hikes in the desert. This is a fantastic book to help identify what I find... Highly recommend.

Matter is “everything in the universe that’s not just empty space.” Easy concept, you say, and you probably have already learned in school that it “comes in three main forms: solid, liquid, and gas.” Ah, but one thing that you’ll soon find out in your science experiments is the fact that “matter can actually switch from one state to the other and back if the temperature and pressure are right.”Perhaps you might be thinking that conducting several experiments can be quite costly, however, most of the items you’ll need can be found around the house. There are a few things you might not have on hand, but dollar stores generally have them in stock. For example, tea lights and flavored gelatin can be purchased there. Other items such as sugar, dish soap, food coloring, masking tape, baking soda, and other common household items can be gathered before experimenting. In the front of the book you’ll find a pictorial list of mish mash of items and tools you’ll need. Oh, and safety pays in many ways so make sure you find an adult for those experiments that call for one.The Growing Crystals experiment is a great ‘inside’ experiment, but if you decide to go for those Big Bubbles, you might want to take it outside. Great book if you are looking to learning practical application of process safety. The book has pretty much no derivations and cuts straight to the chase. All equations are summarized well and the use of each equation is well noted.

This book is a well-organized reference that does an excellent job providing useful heuristics and handy equations for all sorts of situations. It's a great reference that can be used easily to analyze concerns in the workplace.

Missing critical pages in chapters. I didn't mind the missing end of chapter questions, however, I can not tolerate missing pages that contain crucial equations and derivations (in every chapter).

I bought this book for the class. I liked the contents a lot. It covers broad variety of topics all useful for a chemical engineer. Lots of examples. One thing I didn't like about the book, is that it has some errors in the formulas. I already used couple of things there for real technical tasks. (I am still a student)

This was hands down my favorite textbook I have ever read. I think every engineer should read this book before entering the workplace, it is amazing all the things you did not think of safety wise. Most textbooks have been a chore to read but I actually looked forward to this one!

Bought this book as a reference for my Capstone course, couple pages in and I can positively say, it was worth it! The authors way of presenting the theory, creating a solid base before showing a real life example is excellent!

While lacking in detail, I have found this book a good place to start when it comes to safety equipment and strategies for handling other problems with volatile organic chemicals. In this industry specialization is rare. Engineers need a place to start so that they can get the language right before proceeding to the internet and vendors. Well researched and well written. What scumbags our Euro ancestors were. Times and human values were sure different then. The things we value so highly have been paid for in innocent blood. An excellent book but disquieting.

This is a book for foodies. It is as much about the author's trips to, friends at, impressions of, and meals in Venice, Lisbon, and Amsterdam as about the history of the spice trade. There is nevertheless some interesting history here and the author seems to have good knowledge of historical issues and events beyond just spices. The book is well-written and I do think it worthy of four stars but unless you're equally a foodie and a history buff it will be of uneven interest.

Sometimes, one can tell a book by its cover. Michael Krondl's "A Taste of Conquest" features a banquet, the snowny linen tablecloth covered with what might be a rijsttafel of platters, the diners opulent in brocades and satins, the attendants revealing the conquests of the wealthy country in which this feast is celebrated. Listen, and one can hear the lively discussion, probably about lastest opportunities in the spice trades. Inhale, and the mingled aromas of cloves, cinnamon, mace, ginger may transport you.But wait! Two men, somewhat older,look coolly on the proceedings. Who are they? What's going on? Such is the scope and thoroughness of Krondl's research, he probably could tell their names, their significance in this painting, what dishes were on that table (using period cookbooks) and at what human cost to the peasants in far-away Banta or Tindoor."The Taste of Conquest" is one of several books on the spice trade between about 1400 and 1800 that have appeared recently. Each has its merits, but this is by far the best of the best for scholarship, for superb writing, for a sense of a very good mind thinking independently rather than gathering citations, for an exuberant joie de vivre enthusiasm for the way in which paintings, archival reports, tax information, stories, architecture inform us about the world of not so long ago. From the spice trade, three cities----Venice, Lisbon, and Amsterdam---grew to enormous wealth; and from avarice, from changing fashions, from the plant thieves in the night--and more---they subsided.As a few examples--Philip II's (Queen Mary of England's spouse and the spouse of several other profitably chosen princesses) obsession with world dominition and conversion led to the wars that sent merchants flying from Antwerp to Amsterdam; his oppressions eventually led the Dutch to rise against the Spanish----so Krondle tells us & vividly too. The newly independent Dutch formed one of the first joint venture capitalist crowd-sourcing companies, selling a few shares for a few guilders to the shoemakers and seamstresses. Their ships, unencumbered by purposes other than profit-making and captained by an accountant with a heart of flint, took off for the Spice Islands. What happened next is told in swift detail, page-turnng reading.--Dousing spoiled meat with spices arguably was not the reason people used pepper and mace and cinnamon and cardamon and more in such quantities. Rather, as Krondl convincingly shows, the arguments were healthier eating: the medical paradigm was balancing the four humors through dietary adjustments, and books on this from the new printing presses flew out of the booksellers' shops. The enthusiasm for sustaining Venus, for increasing longevity, for other dietary marvels was a high as it is now which can be saying a lot. Besides with plentiful sugar from the new world, it tasted good---very good indeed.Laudably, "The Taste of Conquest" include appropriate & clear illustrations & maps. There is an excellent index as well as a fine bibliography/reference list. Magna cum laudably, there's a splendid epilog on the spice trade today in Venice, in Calicutta in the Indian Institute for Spice Research, and in that international hub of spices for prepared foods as well as our kitchens, in Baltimore. The story begun way back in time is brought in a fine concluding arc to the present. Summa cum laudably, Krindl is a cook, a writer, and the Random House editors did him proud. there isn't a dull sentence, an ungrammatical sentence, an awkward sentence in this book.One caution: the descriptions are so mouth-watering (oh, those Amsterdam Sinterklas cakes!) one with less than perfect self-control can gain weight well before the last page is reached. Another: this is about spices and the world of which they were a commercially dominant part. Those seeking a cookbook featuring spices will find inspiration but not recipes here. However, with such a splendid read, what's a pound here and there?

Ounce for ounce, many other spices, like nutmeg, cinnamon, and saffron, greatly exceed the value of pepper. Yet the world consumes so much pepper ('300,000 tons annually) that pepper dwarfs all other spices in total value traded. Between 20% and 40% of the value of all spices traded (the value of all spices rises and falls a great deal with annual production) are in pepper.This entertaining book traces the history of spice imports into Europe over thousands of years. Three cities, Venice, Lisbon, and Amsterdam, each ruled the trade at different points in history, and this book traces each cities history with that business. It also talks about such issues as how much spice was really consumed in ancient times, a fascinating detour in the book.From English restaurants that specialize in cuisine-rich with pepper-that can be traced to the middle ages, to Venice, where the author visited the docks where a king's fortune was moved annually, to Amsterdam where the corporation was literally invented to assist in the spice trade, Michael Krondl (a chef as well as writer) traces the history of pepper. He even obtained visits to secretive government and industrial labs in India and the USA where new spice mixtures and varieties of pepper are developed.While not as detailed as Nathaniel's Nutmeg (which deals strictly with nutmeg's history), Krondl's book is easier and more enjoyable to read. I received it on a CD as a gift, enjoyed it in the car, and purchased a hard back copy for a more detailed read. Highly recommended.

This is well researched and written, and weaves together a solid understanding of this incident. No one writes about aviation and aviation accidents with the clarity that Langeweish achieves. The only disappointment is that his thesis here is substantially contradicted by his later work on the Air France crash over the south Atlantic, where fly by wire, and specifically the lack of physical linkages between the two pilots' Side sticks combined with atrophied basic flying skills and sloppy procedure to crash an Airbus 330, killing all aboard. His claim that the flight envelope protections were critical to the Hudson landing outcome is also undermined by successful deadstick ditching and landing of 737s by Garuda and TACA pilots, respectively, instances he mentions but doesn't fully appreciate for their comparative implications. Still, a great book that's fair to the airplane and to Sullenberger and Skiles.

I was really not interested in reading about a full account of the Miracle on the Hudson, the US Air flight that a bird strike and landed on the Hudson with the loss of no souls in 2009 mostly because I understood the details of what happened. However, I came across a brilliant article that this author had written on the Air France A330 disaster a few years ago in Vanity Fair and realized that this author managed to weave the story of the accident into a larger story of aviation topics that did really interest me, including engineering topics and technology relating to aviation and "resource management" ( a fancy term describing how the pilots to technology especially during stressful situations) .This book, coming in at about 200 pages, not only relates the story of the accident itself, and actually the details are interesting in this author's narrative, but the author manages to weave the story in discussing all manner of topics from the basics of airplane flight to the computer controlled designs so common on the skies today. He explains these topics that are familiar to me, but I suspect would be still interesting for a lay-reader wanting to understand the accident.I blew through this book, learned quite a bit and enjoyed the book. It is a great read and for those interested in aviation topics, I would consider this an almost must-read.I look forward to reading the author's other books.

Fascinating story about the history of the Airbus A320 - which was engineered with "fail-safe" computer interventions to keep the ride smooth and the plane out of untenable situations (e.g., stalls). These interventions cannot be overridden and this has made the concept a lightning rod for criticisms by professional pilots who don't want to accept that computers can assist with idiot-proofing the act of flying commercial airliners.The book focuses in on the 2009 US Airways Flight 1549 flight which landed in the Hudson River. Every aspect of the flight was detailed as different scenes in the story, while taking the time to provide vast amounts of history behind each component scene - such as the problem of migratory birds and, particularly, this species of geese, the history of flying and computerized intervention in "fly by wire" systems, the how and why of Airbus, and riveting examples of other similar aviation incidents and other water "ditchings."The author, an avid aviator himself, explains how the A320 computerized interventions may have assisted the pilot with his Hudson River landing. For example, when the bird strike first happened and both engines lost thrust - the A320 automatically kept the nose steady and trimmed for stable flight - whereas a conventional plane would have immediately nosed down requiring intervention and re-trimming - distracting the pilot from more pressing tasks such as restarting the engines. First, I am not a big fan of self-help type books but because Hall's first book was a novel about Viet Nam -" Marines Never Cry", I read it as I have former Viet Nam vets in the family. I witnessed the type of negativism applied to returning vets and the impact.Then I had a notification about Flying Upside Down. My biggest fear has been flying. I tried to overcome this by flying a few times and the panic attacks got worse and worse finally culminating with an almost knock down drag out confrontation trying to depart a plane while delayed at the gate. Even offering to get arrested if that's what it took. I just gave up and took other means of transportation to get where I wanted.Hall's recollections of his determination to learn about flying, overcoming the challenges of many modes of flying was very readable. The only problem I had was a lot of detail about the planes and technical aspects of his experiences. I don't know diddly about these so it took a bit of time to get through the reading trying to understand.What I liked best were the stories and experiences along the way. They were personal and full of life lessons, both serious and with pithy humor. So, in all, what I took away from the book were lessons of decision making, prioritizing and learning to overcome my fears one at a time instead of letting it all paralyze me with total inaction which made my life worse.I may not totally give up my hesitation to fly but I don't make excuses about it and accept for now that it is more or less at the bottom of my list of personal challenges. The life lessons I am learning, even at my age, are due to Hall's excellent book.

If you are an athlete or coach looking for an organized and proven approach to developing competitive jumpers then this is THE book. As a rookie high school jumps coach I picked this book up 6 years ago when it was published. Nick clearly outlines how to evaluate and assess athletes and provides clear direction on how to develop each athlete to their fullest potential. His example workout programs, assessment tests and drill inventories allow the individual or coach to develop short, mid and long term workout programs geared to developing exceptionally competitive athletes.In my 6 years of coaching, following Nick’s approach, my athletes have won 8 state titles and many more top 10 finishes. Many have gone on to compete at the NCAA level. Other coaches often want to know where we find these incredible athletes - in reality there are a lot of untapped athletes in every program. This book provides the training guidelines and teaching approach that allows all jumpers to really fly.

I thought I would take a moment and write this review from an athlete’s perspective. I am now a Master’s-level track and field athlete but have been competing and training at a very high-level (in multiple sports) for the last three decades.I purchased the book and read it cover to cover in the first 10 days. Since that time, I have constantly went back, section after section, to have many, many questions answered. Not only is Nick an outstanding and talented writer, but this book presents somewhat technical information in an easy-to-read format for both athletes and coaches. Nick’s deep understanding of what’s required to become an elite jumper is just astounding. I reached out to the author a few months after purchasing and he’s been absolutely great.Bottom line — I cannot recommend this book enough.

Highly recommend this book for anyone who coaches, competes in, enjoys or wants a more thorough understanding of the horizontal jumps. This book is thorough, easy to follow, has so much information that is vital for an athlete or coach to progress in the horizontal jumps. The author has clearly done his homework and has a vast understanding of the subject matter. This book is helpful and has given me so much more information. I now know what I'm doing wrong and what I'm doing right and know how to help my athletes progress. I cannot recommend this book enough! The author backs up all of his theories, information, drills, everything with science. Thank you for a great and helpful read!

This book is the Bible for any jumps coach at the youth or high school level! The insight into training and teaching of the horizontal jumps is invaluable. You can tell the passion the author has for his craft and the time and effort he put into creating this masterpiece for all of us coaches! This will help us train the future state, regional, national, and hopefully world and Olympic champions someday!

I am a Division 1 long and triple jumper and this is the best book that I have come across. It is a great resource for any coaches or athletes to add to their collection. This is a must have book for jumpers it is by far the best horizontal jumps book out there for sample workouts and drills.

Very good book that is informative and practical. Only reason it got 4 stars was the editing which on a few occasions made a couple issues unclear. But otherwise it is as good a source I have read in one place.

I am an elite USA triple jumper so it's hard for me to find training philosophy that I agree with. I am impress with this book; it's thorough ,simplified, right on point.
