Review

"Gr 3-6–Clear diagrams guide readers through the nine to 12 projects found in each of these books. A good mix of old favorites (cornstarch slime and a homopolar motor) are featured along with some neat new tricks (a lens made of ice and coffee filter chromatography). Occasional inconsistent language use (joss stick vs. incense stick in Forces and thumbtack vs. drawing pin in Electricity) reflects the series’s British origin and could lead to confusion. The series is better for the simpler experiments, as the instructions sometimes miss a beat―the origami airplane in Forces is extremely complicated to make, so much so that even the photo of the finished plane looks bunchy and uneven. Best for classroom or club use, as students will need to tinker and adjust to achieve success with some of these projects. VERDICT For schools and libraries with a large budget for STEM activity book series."―School Library Journal, Series Made Simple (Journal)

When a Lexile text measure matches a Lexile reader measure, this is called a "targeted" reading experience. If you love science and want to work on a fabulously fun project or two (or ten!), this is certainly a book you’ll want to read. Perhaps you’ve seen some pretty interesting experiments on YouTube and have wondered just how they’re done. Just how do they make those gigundous bubbles? Well, now’s the time to make your own! Matter is “everything in the universe that’s not just empty space.” Easy concept, you say, and you probably have already learned in school that it “comes in three main forms: solid, liquid, and gas.” Ah, but one thing that you’ll soon find out in your science experiments is the fact that “matter can actually switch from one state to the other and back if the temperature and pressure are right.”Perhaps you might be thinking that conducting several experiments can be quite costly, however, most of the items you’ll need can be found around the house. There are a few things you might not have on hand, but dollar stores generally have them in stock. For example, tea lights and flavored gelatin can be purchased there. Other items such as sugar, dish soap, food coloring, masking tape, baking soda, and other common household items can be gathered before experimenting. In the front of the book you’ll find a pictorial list of mish mash of items and tools you’ll need. Oh, and safety pays in many ways so make sure you find an adult for those experiments that call for one.The Growing Crystals experiment is a great ‘inside’ experiment, but if you decide to go for those Big Bubbles, you might want to take it outside. After you make the bubble mix recipe in this book, simply gather up your materials—a 3-foot long [1-m] thick string or yarn, a couple of round dowels, some duct tapes, paper clips, and a pair of pliers—and be prepared to have a bubble blowout! There are step-by-step instructions with visuals to follow. Before you try this experiment, you’ll learn a bit of amazing science you can think about when that rocket starts moving. In part, that “soap sits on either side of a very, very thin layer of water and resists the water’s surface tension, allowing you to blow big bubbles.” Huge ones, actually. How cool is that? This is a fabulously fun book of experiments for youngsters interested in science. It’s the perfect blend of simple experiments with big lessons that can be read about and discussed in a homeschool or classroom setting. Each experiment is outlined on an easy-to-follow two-page spread (three-page with the Bubble Cube). What makes it easy are the detailed, yet uncluttered layout with those step-by-step instructions and visuals. The hardcover lies flat when opened and I was easily able to work with it. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, and a “Did You Know” section. Perfect book for the budding scientist!•► EXPERIMENTS:Cartesian DiverBubble MixBig BubblesBubble CubeCornstarch SlimeBouncy BallSeparating ColorsGrowing CrystalsInvisible InkFizzy SweetsSpring FountainAge Range: 8 to 12 yearsGrade Level: 4 to 6AMAZING SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS:Fun Experiments with Electricity: Mini Robots, Micro Lightning Strikes, and MoreFun Experiments with Forces and Motion: Hovercrafts, Rockets, and MoreFun Experiments with Light: Periscopes, Kaleidoscopes, and MoreFun Experiments with Matter: Invisible Ink, Giant Bubbles, and MoreThis book courtesy of the publisher (to library).

Loved this book! It uses material that is easily available and does a great job explain how to execute the experiment and why the reaction that occurs does. Great for parents and children.
