Really enjoying the lectures. Two half-hour lectures on each CD. I listen to them while commuting and have learned what it was like to be a poor person, a slave, etc. in early human life.
While I exercise on the cross recumbent machine at the sports club, I listen to these lectures on my Sony CD player. This particular course is exceedingly interesting and many times I extend the time of my sessions, just to keep on listening. I may not lose weight but I am getting a damn fine education...
I'm a big fan of the Great Courses, and thrilled that so many are now available through Audible. I've bought and enjoyed dozens of them over the years. But it must be said that there are plenty of them that I've not stuck with all the way through, I guess because there's typically no narrative hook, no how-will-it-end tension, no characters to bond with except the lecturer which may not happen, not every lecture in a given series may be equally engaging, sometimes the delivery is a bit tedious, etc. So, after an initial pleasant encounter, often, there's no particular compulsion to rush back to finish a course when other audio options are available. NOT SO with this one! Wow...I'm glued to my earbuds, and even struggling to resist plunging through as fast as possible; I want this one to last! This is so vivid, so visual, so immediate, and so dense with fresh and often surprising, even shocking, moments of discovery. It really feels like being on the ground in worlds I've only ever seen before from far above. Magnificent!
Loved listening to this book on long drives -- felt like I had taken a trip into the past without having to endure the famines, floggings, or poor sanitation!The speaker balances a palpable enthusiasm for the ancient world with plain speech about about its barbarity and prejudices, particularly the life of the disabled and poor.By focusing on the lives of the ordinary people he has stripped away much of the glamour that modern-day revisionists ascribe to ancient civilizations. For example, he discusses the great accomplishments of Greek culture while laying bare the deep-rooted misogyny and unreflecting reliance on slavery. He highlights the toughness, organization and civic-mindedness of the Romans without shrinking from their brutality.This balance continues in every vignette, mixing affection and admiration with plain descriptions of misery and social caste and crippling tradition.Perhaps my favorite chapters were on the Romans in Britain, where he juxtaposes the many achievements of the Romans (baths! roads! aqueducts!) with the lot of the Roman solider forced to serve in this outpost, and quotes from Auden's poem Roman Wall Blues.
I listen to The Great Courses all the time, having gone through over 80 with many more in the queue. So I really don't have time to repeat any, although I wish I did. This course, however, made it to that level. I first listened to it 3 years ago, but recently felt the need to go through a refresher. It illuminates a truly fascinating side of history that most of us never think about. We study the popular characters, and often they're the winners. Upon completing this course, however, you will realize just how difficult life was for the vast majority of humans...in civilized societies mind you...that have ever walked this planet. They're the 99% that except for this course you may never know. And Robert Garland's presentation is always engaging; he's a great lecturer. Listening to this course is time well spent.
The Great Courses series “The Other Side of History: Daily Life in the Ancient World†by Robert Garland is a series of lectures focusing on what life was like for different groups of people in various ancient civilizations. Lecture 1 is an introduction to the course. Lecture 2 focuses on the Stone Age. Lecture 3 is about ancient Mesopotamia. Lectures 4-8 focus on ancient Egypt. Lectures 9-20 are about daily life in ancient Greece. Lecture 21 talks about ancient Persia, and lecture 22 focuses on Hellenistic Egypt, while lectures 23-34 are about life in ancient Rome. Lectures 35-37 are about daily life in ancient Britain, Lecture 38 is about the ancient Vikings and lecture 39 focuses on the ancient Normans. Lectures 39-47 focuses on the early middle ages, and lecture 48 sums up the course. I found it interesting that ancient Egypt, unlike other ancient civilizations, was the first one to be culturally homogenous. When discussing the role of women in ancient Egypt, I was surprised at how many rights women actually had. Particularly surprising to me was the fact that ancient Egyptian women could serve on juries. While I enjoyed this course, I honestly think that it would have been more accurate to call this course “Daily Life in the Ancient and Early Medieval Mediterranean World,†because 99% of the courses focus on ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, and Prof. Garland would have done well to devote at least six or seven lectures to each of the great ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia---Sumeria, Akkad, Aram, the Hittites, etc---as well as ancient Israel and Persia. He also devoted no lectures to the ancient Far East (India, China, Japan, etc), sub-Saharan Africa, or the Americas. Given this fact, it would have been more accurate for Prof. Garland to have titled this series of lectures “The Other Side of History: Daily Life in the Ancient Mediterranean World.†Thus, I enjoyed this course immensely, despite the narrow focus of the course. He also got it wrong when he described those Jews who cut themselves off from the rest of the community as being “related to†the Essenes. That is exactly what the Essenes did. Another thing which Prof. Garland gets wrong is that while some Vikings had swords, the vast majority of them would only have axes because only chieftains and other noblemen would own swords since they were expensive to make.All in all, despite the narrow focus of the course, I would highly recommend this course nonetheless.
