As an experienced global vagabond, I never rely on any published travel guide for up-to-the-minute lodging, eating, transport and admissions info. I do, however, use my favorite guidebooks to help zero in on lodging, eating, transport and attractions to check out for myself online, by phone and/or in person.We've used LPs, Blue Guides, Time Outs, Let's Gos, Frommers and Fodors for this purpose for a number of trips to Greece and elsewhere over the years, and generally Rough Guides hit the mark the best for us. IMHO they provide by far the best cultural and historical context, and the range of recommended accommodations, dining and attractions hits our sweet spot. This volume is no exception, and I recommend it.Kalo taxidi!
As I write, this book appears to be not available except through resellers. Presumably there will be a new edition. Unlike every other contemporary travel guide that I have seen, this book does not attempt to put a happy face on everything but is often quite critical. In fact the negativity sometimes seems excessive. However the author seems to have an opinion about every beach and every taverna, and, in my experience on five of the islands he reviews, his recommendations are quite reliable. There is a lot of useful information in addition to the reviews. There is an extensive history section and a lot interesting reading in quirky appendices ranging over everything from 17th century Ikarian bedding to the tuning of violins on Kos.
