I see a lot of more experienced and accomplished artists and illustrators complaining about details , but as a beginner I found it very rewarding, very quickly. I don't think that I am learning anything too specific that will harm me down the road, I couldn't draw a frog or really a square very well. My first picture was better than I would have hoped for after a month...If I can find where Amazon has moved the add a picture button, I will try to post a pic of my first drawing. This book is really good at teaching the beginner the basics, like making a circle and creating the center lines and placing the eyes, ears and nose properly.I do think it could spend more time on the eyes. But really, if you want to get a book that will have you drawing faces in a DAY it is pretty amazing!
This is basically just another one of those "draw a circle here, a square there, now make it look like this next picture" books.Christopher Hart goes into no real detail on the methods and techniques that a beginning artist needs to learn and offers no real lessons or exercises a budding artist needs.Yes there are a few examples, but no real guidelines or explanations.I think most people giving this book high reviews open it up, look through it, see a lot of nice artwork and then praise it without actually using the book itself. What's more, the art in the book isn't even drawn by Hart himself, how can he claim to teach you how to draw when he can't even draw the art for his own book? What's more the book just rushes through and jumps from one thing to the next.Any artist knows that you can't just jump into drawing professional manga, or anything else, overnight like how this book claims and when the young, aspiring artist can't do what this book claims is a beginner guide, they'll just get discouraged and stop.Don't get this for the new, beginner, novice, intermediate or advanced artist, it'll just turn them off drawing. If you really want a good "how to draw manga" book, go with Mark Criley.
This book was a huge help! I came in knowing absolutely nothing about manga (much less how to draw it), and it really did teach me so I could start drawing right away! The book led me through everything, from the classic manga head to how to use lighting! I would totally recommend it for any manga drawing wanna-be out there!
It's a great book for drawing bodies as it shows you where all the joints are in both male and female mannequins. It also shows different orientations and has lots of good tips for beginning manga artists to make their manga look more professional. In a lot of the book it's obvious that the art was done by different people; that may be a plus or a minus as you can see a few of the different ways to draw manga. The book is really lacking in terms of how to draw heads. Mark Crilley's Mastering Manga does an insanely better job at it. One issue I ave with this book is that it shows you how to DRAW manga, but it seriously lacks on how to write it, unlike Impact Studio's obscure book-that-I-can't-remember-the-name-of. Overall, though, I'd definitely recommend it. Also, it struggles in terms of proportions and how many heads tall people are. You get a bit of that in MM.
I have other books by Christopher Hart and have found them very helpful with cartoon drawing. So when I saw he had a Manga book especially for beginners, I chose it right away & I'm glad I did! It has great instruction on how to draw not only people and animals but also inspiration for scenes in Manga, putting the characters in action poses. Great book, thank you Mr. Hart!
My granddaughter was ecstatic upon receiving this book. She is a budding artist and was having trouble drawing hands and feet; just a week after Christmas she's become more proficient. I'll definitely be purchasing more of Christopher Hart's books in the future. Well worth the cost, and I highly recommend this item.
My son has just begun working with Manga drawing and this has been an asset. Even though he is quite capable of finding examples on line and does use images from there, this book provides so much in a concise reference. Good starting points to bounce your imagination off of and to help you frame the basics of manga so you can know what features determine it being 'manga'!
Beginning as a beginner some of the steps and pictures get a little tricky in this book, but never get discouraged!! This is only the beginning after all! Original and cute characters give great ideas and features for characters of your own and there are plenty ways to try techniques and styles. The book itself is good material nice glossy pages and vibrant colors, and the steps and techniques are easily explained to the learning artist. A very good book for the beginner!
My 10 year old daughter really enjoys this book. She is just learning how to draw, and says this is a great book for beginners. A lot of good information and step by step guides.
