Rebel Fleet was a good, solid sci-fi read that had plenty of action and an interesting plot-line that had some uniquely different ideas. The basic premise is: in the distant past the Imperial Kher seeded numerous worlds. Their off-spring are known by the term sub-Kher and have developed according to the environment on whatever particular planet they come from - some are repilian, others are ape-like or cat-like, etc. Now these sub-Kher are rebelling against the Empire and things are not going well. Many sub-Kher worlds are been destroyed by the Imperials and the Rebels themselves are not a truly united force. Earth, having been discovered by the Rebels, is now set to join the fight. Enter Leo Blake, former naval pilot and reservist. His curiousity about a strange object near a Hawaiian beach causes him to be infected by a symbiotic organism. The next thing he knows, he's on board a Rebel ship and from that point on, Blake and fellow humans find themselves on the latest frontline facing powerful Imperial warships. What sets this book apart from others, is the fact that when you think of Rebels, you're likely to think of an united group bent on winning freedom from a stronger opponent. Not so, in Larson's Rebel Fleet. The rebels in Larson's universe are about as self-serving as you can get and they don't necessarily want to 'win' the war against the Imperials. Every species in the rebel fleet gets to higher positions based on points scored - these can be won by fighting other rebel species, in battle or in some other way. I like this concept because it feels 'alien' and Larson does a great job in describing Blakes bewilderment of such tactics. Blake represents Earth's military thinking: discipline, obedience to orders, unity and comradre between your men/women, etc. Naturally Blake is quick to take advantage and his wacky, sometimes dangerous ideas have even the Rebel officers trying to figure out whether to ice him or let him do his thing. The only thing that was a little weird for me was the whole cat/human sex thing, ummmmm, that was well....just weird??? Other than that, it was pretty good. So if you want to read a book that is fun and entertaining, then this latest B.V. Larson book will is just the thing :)

I love all of B.V. Larson's books/series. However, this one is my least favorite. It was still great, but I just couldn't get into the main, or even minor, characters, both heroes and Villains. At the end of the story, I didn't feel any emotional connection to any of them. I wasn't really rooting for the good guys to win or charged up to see the bad guys get there proper dues. In fact there really wasn't a proper 'Bad' guy, everyone was just doing/working for what they thought was the right thing to do. I really did like the universe and the ships and tech that this story took place in/with. I would still read any new books if this becomes a series.

I really enjoy all of Larson's books. His characters aren't goody two shoes or politically correct. Believable people with talents rising to the occasion. Blake in this series reminds me of his character McGill in the Undying Mercenaries series in his willingness to be crafty and break the rules of unfair civilizations. One of Larson's messages seems to be that you shouldn't let yourself get crushed by the system. The rules-followers need the rules-breakers in order to survive. I hope more books come in this series.

At first, I wasn't sure what the heck was going on, and I wasn't sure that I would like this book. But, after the main character (Leo Blake) begins his Rebel Fleet training... I was completely hooked, and loved the story! Very interesting and real implications vis-a-vis Earth and a future alien encounter (i.e. we are primitive!). The way the Rebel Fleet operates is very interesting and well imagined (Fascinating C2 structure). Survival of the fittest at its core!

This is a different kind of story!!! I love it and it only gets better when you read it a second time. Do yourself a favor and add the Audible narration and hear this too!!! It's worth it to support BVL to create great reads like this. Don't forget to put up some stars and review to show your support!!!

This is not Star Trek. No prime directive or intelligent and "civilized" aliens bringing a message of peace and wisdom. The aliens are not really aliens, their our genetic cousins from multiple different worlds and they are all batshit crazy, from a human's point of view. To the Kher (our otherworldly cousins) we are wild, dirty and tricky primates.Leo Blake and 4 other lucky humans (or unlucky depending on your point of view) are "drafted" by the Kher rebel fleet to fight alongside all the rebel worlds against a lethal and more advanced enemy, the imperial fleet.Leo and his human crew go through a great series of ordeals trying to survive in an environment where even their supposed allies want to kill them for points and status. However, the cunning instincts and earthly conartist abilities of Leo gets them out of pretty precarious situations. They get pretty banged up, but always managed to best every single challenger. There were several passages in the book that made me laugh out loud. Leo's interactions with the Kher and his thoughts were hilarious at times. The humans proved to the crazy aliens that they were worthy of respect, when they single handedly destroyed a fleet of imperials. In earth that would earn a soldier a medal, in the rebel Kher fleet that meant you have a target on your back and others can challenge you to gain points and rank. Here there is no idealism about enlightened aliens coming to cure our worlds ills. This book offers a very different take on close encounters of the third kind, and keeps you entertained and amused from beginning to end.

Over the time I had become a BV Larson fan. The books are easy to read with great imagination and funny characters and stories. I started the Rebel Fleet after finishing Home World and I am enjoying it a lot. I recommend this to any space fan.

The universe crafted in this story was excellent. The story was well crafted and expertly delivered. Thoroughly enjoyable read. Great
