I am not sure I have enough superlatives to describe this book. If someone living in Florida has even a passing interest in the world around them, they should run to order it. All of us actually have a responsibilty to know the basics that Tonya Clayton so clearly descibes here. We need to know not just to satisfy our curiosity, but also to be able to make informed decisions about issues relating to everything from conservation, to community decision-making regarding development and coast management, to newspaper articles and discussions regarding coastal insurance costs and changes, etc.Packed with information, and yet incredibly readable, this book will open up the magic (and the terror) of the constantly changing Florida Gulf coast. If you have experienced the coast changing under your feet you will be fascinated by the descriptions even though you probably already have a better than decent respect for how impermanent the coast is. For those who have never seen the Gulf coast before and after an overwash or inundation, this book should give you a heads up!I read the book with satellite maps at hand. It was useful to go look at what was being described. I would suggest a hardcopy so you can see the book photos with the text and easily navigate pages and photos. You WILL end up wanting to revisit decriptions and photos as you learn more.I originally got the kindle version then got hardcopy for ease of use.Thank you Tonya Clayton for this amazing book!

Very interesting and informative book. I would have preferred more emphasis on the Cedar Keys/Suwannee Sound area, but that is an area of personal interest, and perhaps more space will be devoted to it in a future edition. In any event, the comment is in no way intended to detract from the value of the book.

It's enjoyable if you have interest in a sampling of environmental books and scholars. Required for a class on environmentalism and was an enjoyable read.

In that I mean that it's hard to follow without a degree in the subject. I don't have a degree, so I just never finished the book.

This book considers beaches and barrier islands from the Alabama border to the tip of Florida. Most of the book is about specific beaches, describing the processes of beach formation and stability. While it could be used as a general intro to beach dynamics, its main interest will be Floridians and others interested in the Gulf beaches. The processes generally would be similar in the other Gulf states. The book emphasizes that beaches are dynamic, a result of the interactions of sea level, sand (or other materials), wind, geography (the angle of the coast interacts with prevailing winds, for example, with effects on beaches).The chapters I found most interesting are Chapter 3 "Shorelines in Motion," Chapter 4 "Dunes,"; Chapter 6 "Ephemera," (this would include tidal traces, marks in the sand from birds, ripple marks and such); and Chapter 8, "Beach Remodeling" (which discusses beach replenishment and other human constructions, and their impact on beaches).Among the things mentioned are ghost forests. These have standing stumps or trees on the beach, and are the ghosts of forested areas destroyed by encroaching beaches. "Paleotempestology" is a concept I'd not read about before, but is the study of old storms, that is seeing evidence of their impact on beaches. I also had never read of the "meteotsunami," when water and atmospheric waves keep in phase and create a kind of rogue tsunami. And, global warming will have a huge impact on beaches, with a 20 to 40 inch sea level rise expected in the next 9 decades.The "Reading" part of the title is for serious readers, who can study the descriptions and the photographs of the phenomenon described, and then go to the beach and look. This book isn't exactly a field guide but the seriously interested could use it that way. Overall it is less how to read than here's how science reads what has happened.

Napalm & Silly Putty Hardcover – April 24, 2001George Carlin is a hoot. I keep this around the coffee table. Many pick it up and look at it for a while, for a laugh. Sometimes it takes only a few moments and they laugh. Sometimes longer before they get the gist of what it is, they just got handed to them about a topic that is so obvious, after George would let you in on the humor of his mind's view of what he sees. I miss having him around. I hope he is well now, floating around the universe wise cracking on all that is out there.

Carlin fans will find most of the material in this book familiar as it is also seen in his stand-up (which is okay, most comedians do that).The nice things about the book is that its written in a variety of styles and in short sections...so it makes for an easy pick it up and read a bit anytime.(but that also means nothing may grab you to finish the entire book quickly) There are no real chapters nor table of contents and the subject matter changes frequently (even aside from the breaks of "short takes" which are much like his "Brain Droppings" one sentence observations)Some of the material is thought provoking, some of it is just silly. Some of it is just thrown out there to see what bites and move on. You will find yourself laughing aloud, especially when caught off guard by an absurd "short take".To appreciate the humor, I also found it helpful to really have Carlin's voice and delivery style in your head (watch a recent HBO special to get familiar with it). Without that definite "Carlin" rythm, you may miss the pure comedy to the writing.Overall, you will find this smart comedy and although some of it seems quickly assembled, it does contain purpose and thought.A word of warning: For those not familiar with Mr.Carlin, there is a fair share of obscene language, religious satire, and other possibly offensive subject matter. With that all said, enjoy!

I have been a HUGE Carlin fan since I was first introduced back in high school in 2003. My one regret in my life thus far is not seeing him live when I have 2 opportunities to do so.That being said, if you are a Carlin fan you must have this book. If you are a Carlin fan you must have Braindroppings and When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops as well.I have read each book numerous times and when I read them I can hear his voice saying it outloud. A must have for any Carlin fan.

George Carlin is one of the few things my dad and I have in common (which gets him bonus points because my dad and I are as similar as night and day). Napalm and SIlly Putty essentially covers all areas of his ranting - religion, airline safety, the government, and others - with nothing really *new*. However, the rants themselves have been updated and redone to cover new areas of complaint.This probably isn't the best work he's done, but I think it's awesome nonetheless. I highly recommend it for any Carlin fan. However, if you have "Your Are All Diseased" on CD, it's nothing new, but it includes more things that aren't on the CD. Buy it to complete or start a collection and I think you'll be amused.

Napalm And Silly Putty is very similar to Brain Droppings and When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops so my thoughts on it are similar to those books. It's hilarious, short, fun, and covers a massive variety of topics from politics to things that we all think about but never say. Carlin recycles some of his stand-up in this book but it is still fun to read and, unless you've seen all of his HBO specials multiple times like I have, you might not notice. Good for getting a laugh and for taking a break from novels that actually have a story.

Crude and rude kind of guy, quite self-centered and overly opinionated and narcissistic which perhaps is what one needs to be as a stand up comedian.

I bought this book for my husband, but he was disappointed. I guess the humor was too lame.

Carlin has been around for an awful long time and he is still a very funny man. He comes across like an philosopher except really angry and bitter about things in the world. However, because I identify with a lot of the things he says, he can not be far from reality.Some of the material in this book is from stand-up routines Carlin has done. Some of the stuff is really fresh. I really enjoyed Carlin's expose on the camcorder. Some people just don't know when to stop filming. How can people possibly watch all of thehome movies from their meaningless lives.I liked reading bits and peices of this book just to brighten up my day. It reads well this way. Overall, well worth the price!

I compare this to his other book (Brain Droppings), and get left with a bad taste in my mouth. I feel that Brain Droppings is probably 80% new material, whereas this book is maybe only 40% new material. Almost everything in it I had heard before. This disappointed me deeply. Not only that, but reading the book is much better, Carlin's book on cd was mostly kind of boring, as he did it much less emotionally than he does his live standup. If you read it, you can actually see him doing the standup in your head. So I do not recommend the cd version, go with the book, but only if you don't mind getting a rehash of older material.

I was initially very excited to work through the book's 60 case interviews. I had been using free online resources to get my practice cases, but was looking at alternative sources of cases. It hurts me to say that after working through the first 15 of this book's cases , I was massively disappointed. There are three main reasons why I feel these cases are low-quality and do not meet my, and likely many others', expectations.1) The cases are extremely short. Each case takes up 1-2 pages at most. Most of these cases are just one simple math calculation or one qualitative business question, which takes about 5-8 minutes to complete. A real case interview takes 30-45 minutes to complete. There is simply not enough substantial content in these practice cases for me to learn and get better at case interviews. A high quality case should take up 5-8+ pages, have multiple questions, include charts, and detailed answers for the candidate to go through. This book does not deliver on that.2) There are much higher quality cases available online for FREE. I found these through a quick Google search. For example, check out Master the Case or Wall Street Oasis for a large collection of free casebooks from top MBA schools over the past ten years.3) Some of the business explanations are just wrong. In the first case, it says that gas is a commoditized product, so customers have inelastic demand to its price. This is straight up wrong. If a product is commoditized that means that price is the only factor customers consider when making their purchases, unless switching costs are high. Therefore, if gas prices go up, then customer demand will go down for that company's product since it is easy to switch to another gasoline station. There are multiple other instances where I disagree with their solutions based on fundamental business principles.In short, I do feel there is a market gap in high-quality cases. I was really rooting for this book to fill that market gap. Unfortunately, this book is a lower quality than the readily available free case books you can find online. I'd advise anyone to save their money and look at other sources for their practice cases. The ones in this book aren't worth your time.

This is a comprehensive book! Almost 300 pages of cases. I am using it in mock interviews with friends and we usually get through 2-3 cases each time. I don't think I will be able to finish it before my interview. Really good quality as well.

Very happy with the book - really good cases.

I have read Victor Cheng's Case Interview Secrets as well as Marc Cosentino's Case in Point. Both books lack practice cases and feel incomplete as a result. This book states in the introduction that it aims to "fill this gap", and it definitely manages to do so. I have never seen such a comprehensive collection of case questions for consulting. Highly recommended.

This is an excellent and important study!! There are quite a few that might not like this but that doesn't make it any less true. I have a few more studies of his in my library and I look forward to acquiring more!

This book has been an excellent awakener to the truth about who the gentiles are as I study my black history in the Bible. Since america doesn’t teach the truth about the negro, I’ve chosen the teachings of Dante Fortson as my black history class. And knowing who the gentiles are, is essential to knowing the truth. I believe that THE MOST HIGH GOD anointed Dante Fortson to write Unmasking the Gentiles for such a time as this. Thank you Dante Fortson.

This book should be placed in every black church library for review every Sunday for lessons studied and Bible study group. It was great reading, and highly great reading.

Yet again another great book by Dante Fortson. The break down of scripture is easy to understand. I am fan Mr. Fortson.

This Brother backs up everything he writes with scripture! On point! A truly blessed individual, and gift to all of Israel!

It was a good read, although I don't agree with some of the points that the author made.

The three axes model is a game changer for political discourse, but the first edition of the book wasn't all that clear. There were actually introductions and explanations by other bloggers that I thought conveyed the ideas more effectively than Kling does in his book. That's no longer the case, the second edition is much better than the first. It's nearly three times as long (146 pages vs the original edition's 54), and more importantly gets the ideas across better. And that's important because this is a very important idea, one that -- if read by everyone -- would lead to much more understanding all around.

Arnold Kling is a Cato Institute Adjunct Scholar, a Mercatus Center affiliate, and regularly posts to his askblog site. His book: The Three Languages of Politics is a short essay and analysis of political speech in the United States.Kling identifies three ideological groups and their dominant dichotomies. Progressives divide issues along an oppressor–oppressed axis. Conservatives use a civilized–barbarous axis. And libertarians, Kling’s camp, use a freedom–coercive axis.He goes on to say that individuals in each camp use political language divided along these axes to show loyalty, elevate status, and create hostility towards others in opposing camps.Political debate using these preferred axes is frustrating and endless as each camp talks past the other without communicating.A debater might either aim to: open minds of those in opposition, open minds of those in their camp, or close the minds of those in their camp. The majority opt for the third option.Uncharitable discussion focuses on finding an opponent’s weakest argument and denouncing it.Few participants attempt to be charitable and end up narrowing and reducing their audience’s understanding of the issues at hand.In the course of argumentation, Kling observes, we suggest we are reasonable and our opponent is not. The only people we are qualified to call unreasonable [or other derogatory terms] are ourselves. Our opponents may be wrong, however, and it is our burden to prove it [which is often hard or impossible].Kling suggests we treat these ideologies as languages to be understood and not heresies to be stamped out.Learning the language of other camps enables us to understand how others think about political issues without demonizing their positions or them.Constructive reasoning weighs the merits of facts and theories to take a stand on an issue. Motivated reasoning filters the facts and theories to legitimate preconceived opinions.Engaging in motivated reasoning is like arguing a case at law. We present evidence to justify or reinforce already accepted ideas. Openness only extends to those facts and theories that support our views.Kling concludes that constructive reasoning applies an equal standard to evidence that supports or contradicts our preconceptions. We become open to changing our minds.

There is a lot, lot, lot, lot of practical information in this small book. The author does not talk over you head, he breaks everything down for the reader. I'm a Progressive. This book did not change my views, but it allowed me to understand other viewpoints. This prevents me from stereotyping others as stupid or selfish. The Conservatives and Libertarians have valid viewpoints as well. He sites many examples where in any one situation all three views were valid. Understanding others has calmed my anger toward others that don't share my views. I bought both the Kindle and paperback versions.

Although Mr. Kling is associated with the libertarian think tank, the Cato Institute, he is very even-handed in describing the three languages in politics: libertarianism, conservatism and progressivism. Though a quick read at 87 pages, he goes in depth to give examples of the frameworks by which each of the three groups see the world and it seems pretty accurate to me. In doing so, he makes a point of asserting that none of the three groups have bad intentions in their approaches, it is just how they see the world and this book is intended to help each of us talk to our friends and family that may not be in our "tribe".I have two minor criticisms: (1) While I - and others - have a primary language/tribe, on certain issues I see the world more from the perspective of one of the other tribes, so am I a hybrid or a centrist? He really does not address those of us who do not march in lockstep and (2) He really does not address how the issue of ineptness and corruption in both major political parties (dominated usually by the party in power) fits into all this. There are many of us from all tribes who feel the system is corrupt and inept in that the views of the majority on many issues do not prevail---I understand in a pluralistic society there is a need to protect the rights of those in the minority on certain issues, but it does not seem like majority rule anymore.That said, a worthwhile read that will make think...and in the future take time to think before deciding.

It looks like most political commentators are just talking past one another. Why? Arnold Kling hazards a guess, arguing that people don't understand one another because they have fundamentally different visions of how the world works. According to Kling, conservatives see the world as a conflict between civilization and barbarism, liberals see it as a conflict between oppressors and the oppressed, and libertarians see it as a conflict between liberty and power.Kling is clear that he is offering a hypothesis rather than an exhaustive empirical study. It is a short and easy read, and it is one that (I expect) will help us make sense of political history and the political present.The Three Languages of Politics

Dr. Kling eloquently describes why most politically inclined folks fall prey to the fast thinking that more often than not comes from our polarized media. Only with slow thinking can we start to make progress in some of the most troublesome issues that malign our society. If we avoid the talking head noise and the bluster of those entrenched in their chosen tribe, we can start to see a reasoned reality from which understanding and progress take root.
