I have read a lot of marketing books and remained hopeful when I purchased this one that perhaps I would find a book worth reading. Most of what I have read falls in the old genre I made a million selling swamp land and so can you. They promise the stars and deliver the swamp. No value. I was skeptical but hopeful.The Jerry McGuire line "you had me at hello" was appropriate for me in what I think of this book. From the very beginning this no nonsense and no BS approach to sharing a playoff how to actually build a marketing strategy was invaluable. My MBA marketing courses didn't teach me as clearly as this book did. I cannot recommend this book highly enough and book 5 copies for my employees. Do not let the low cost of this book fool you into taking it lightly. If you really, really want to grow your business without wasting time and scarce money on marketing, buy this book and complete the exercises inside. You will not be disappointed.Over the last 9 years I have paid coaches to help me develop my business - over $56K (not to mention the cost of travel, hotels, etc... to attend training sessions). The book is as complete as it gets. It logically progresses from the best definition of marketing I have seen, to walking through the steps and activities to define your market place, to developing the type of marking thrust across multiple marketing legs to attract clients, get clients to trust you and want to do business with you, to retaining and growing the individual customers to continue purchasing over time.No matter what business you're in, whether it's service related or manufactured goods, if you want to learn to market in the 21st century, and if you're willing to follow the advice and perform the exercises that the author Allan Dib provides in this book, then buy this book and you will learn to develop a marketing plan that will allow you to compete successfully and make you money.PS: Please don't tell my competitors about this book. I enjoy the advantage this gives me.

This book is a must for anyone trying to devise a marketing plan. Perfectly suited to professional services but really applies to any service type business. Before, I couldn't really say that I had a marketing plan, I was just doing what he calls "random acts of marketing". Sixty-five years ago I bought a copy of Lin Yutang’s “The Wisdom of Confucius.” I still have it, the clearest and best organized introduction to the Confucian Classics ever written in English, as far as I know. During the 1930's through 50's, anyone wanting to know about Chinese language and culture in English relied on works by Lin Yutang. He was a genius who has since dropped from view, but Thomas S. Mullaney brings him back as the unlikely hero of the fascinating history of the Chinese typewriter. In this book, the typewriter is presented as the foil in the monumental 150-year quest to find the organizing principle of Chinese writing. Lifetimes were devoted by a fascinating array of geniuses to find such a principle, primarily to fit the Chinese written language onto the typewriter. After numerous valiant attempts over many decades, the answer was at last revealed: there is no organizing principle of written Chinese. It cannot be adapted for the typewriter by reducing it to alphabetical or numerical order. Organized according to common usage, or according to analyses of the brush strokes, are the two obvious remaining choices. Those are the principles upon which Chinese characters were traditionally sorted for printing or typing, with only moderate success.The Chinese puzzle was finally solved by Lin Yutang, who invented an electro-mechanical typewriter using predictive text The auto-suggestions on the Google search bar, or in Microsoft Word, are taken for granted today. You type in a letter or two and the computer program comes up with what you probably want. But in 1947 Lin Yutang rolled out an electro-mechanical typewriter that did just that without a computer, and in Chinese – and it could print every Chinese character in existence. The Chinese Communist Revolution and the Korean War destroyed any chance of gaining financial backing to manufacture the MingKwai, as Lin called his typewriter, and it was never brought into production. However, the emergence of the personal computer made predictive text imminently practical and perhaps saved the written Chinese language from total eclipse from the alphabetic scripts used by the rest of the world. I think Lin Yutang would be satisfied.The fascinating history of the Chinese typewriter – and Chinese written language – is exceptionally well told in this exhaustively researched book. The writing flows along like a novel and I couldn’t put it down. I was surprised, however, on page 277-8 to read that Mullaney speculates that the one and only MingKwai typewriter ever made must have been destroyed. He could have looked at the web page of the Lin Yutang House in Taipei and see that it is included as one of the exhibits on display there, apparently whole and complete. I certainly hope the web site is correct and that Mullaney was mistaken. All of the many other digressions and anecdotes within the book carried me right along with them, and I give Mullaney five well deserved stars for a book that has no competition. It is one of a kind.

I love typewriters and languages, so this book was a sure thing as my interests go.And I learned a great deal.Perhaps the greatest takeaway was the degree to which the Chinese language was viewed as inferior (not just outside of China but also within) simply because the many thousands of characters weren’t easily accommodated onto a Western-designed keyboard.It’s worth noting that the Internet itself was not designed to support Chinese characters either. IDNs are, at best, a hack and probably will be for the foreseeable future.But it’s fascinating to see how the “standard” Western typewriter evolved and how it impacted typewriter innovations for supporting Chinese.The conventional single shift keyboard that we use today was not the only keyboard available a hundred years ago. For instance, I have a typewriter that features a great many more keys (and no shift key)Turns out that this typewriter was ideal for the Thai language, at least until the company that made this typewriter was bought out and the design laid to rest.Progress we call it.The author has a sequel in the works, I’m assuming it will be titled The Chinese Computer. And I can’t wait to read it.

Highly recommended for technologists, especially in view of China's growing role and leadership in key areas of technology, from machine learning to consumer tech.The book assumes some basic understanding of modern Chinese history (late 19th century onward). The more you know, the better you'll understand passing references to language reform debates, Maoist terminology and so on, but the book is geared to the interested layperson, not just China specialists.Ironic note for potential Kindle customers: the Chinese characters sprinkled throughout the text for illustrative purposes don't render on older devices.

Anyways, Ramesses and Neferterri live a parallel life (I won't say double since that has a negative connotation) as a normal married couple with kids and a Domina/Dominant with subs that a part of a tight knit BDSM community. Their lives, at first seem idyllic and quite frankly, exciting, but their lives come with struggles and as you read the book, you find that their are many cons to this lifestyle.Now, at first, you may be put off by the grammar changes, which he explains, but as time goes on, it won't be a problem, which is helped by his writing style. He breaks the third wall in this book, (Think Zach in Saved by the Bell) and it helps break down their subculture which helps you not be confused. I liked the dialogue in the book between the people "in the life" as i call it. It reminds me of Shakespeare times or ancient Rome, (M' Lord, M' lady, Goddess)Oh yeah, there's hot sex, sex, and more sex. There should be a disclaimer saying that the book might have you calling people up in the heat of the night that you might regret calling the morning after. Mr. Rashaan doesn't disappoint witht he threesomes, foursomes and my favorite scene is when Ramesses and his wife break in a new submissive. All I can say is..whoa.The only thing I'd say is I would love to read a prequel someday about the how Ramesses met his beloved, and how he met Amentenhop, his mentor who has his own challenges in the book. I recommend this book, but if you find yourself being "awakened" by the hot sex scenes in this book, just remember, He/she is your ex for a reason.

Yowza. I've had this book on my TBR for awhile and I'm so glad that I finally bit the bullet, so to speak. Mr. Rashaan has done a great job creating a whole new style of erotica that may have some of the same labels as other books but is happily defining it's own unique niche in a crowded and confusing genre.There were times early on in The Awakening when I felt like I was watching a new couples reality TV show: KINKY Chocolate: Atlanta or I was in a master class of BDSM, African American Style. Sometimes I just wanted to raise my hand and ask annoying questions like: "Master? Who is this Saint Andrew anyway and did HE even want to be on his cross?"That kind of question would have probably gotten me flogged and that is why this kind of story is only marginally sexy for me. I have a big mouth and getting punished for it would be a full time experience if I was into this lifestyle. So thank goodness and Mr. Rashaan who has given me the opportunity to enjoy it the only way I possibly could -- vicariously.And while it's clear that the author takes his WIITWD seriously it's also clear that his tongue is firmly planted in his cheek throughout the book and I appreciated that. It's alright to take yourself seriously and expect other people to but it's also okay to laugh at yourself occasionally especially if you're potentially shocking the heck out of people.I got progressively more into the characters in this book and the writing style as the story evolved. It was hard at first I think cause my brain was working overtime to understand the nuances of everything I was reading about that was new to me. By the end of the book though I was a thorough covert. I wanted to read more about Jay and Candy or see how Rameses and Neferterri create a mega-dynasty while keeping their lifestyle and their "vanilla" life separate and find out who else was gonna jump out of the woodwork and be crazy enough to mess with any of them.The Awakening is a fascinating ride and if you are on the fence like I was -- just jump in. The water is fine.

With its twists and turns and surprises along the way, it is sure to become an "awakening" for any who dare to journey to the "Dark side."I felt like a voyeur standing back in the corner watching the goings on in this story. I love the way the author took the time to explain things about the fetish community, so that us novice wouldn't need Google to get an understanding of what was going on. The story was hot and sexy, the story development was on point and this was an all around good read. I've started the second installment and can't wait to see the twists and turns the storyline is going to take!!!! I'd tell anyone to give this a read and fast.

I had to put this book aside for a minute while I finished up a few projects I was working on, but once I picked it up and started again, I was unable to put it down.This novel was like none I'd ever read, smoking hot! On the one hand, Ramesses and Neferterri were no different from any other hard working, successful couple with a family. However, there was a secret side of them where they lived a sexy lifestyle full of fetishes and BDSM in which the author brings to us in high definition. The scenes are very vivid and are told in a way that explains the BDSM lifestyle to those who might not be familiar with those types of scenarios and terminology. This book is more than sex and erotica and that's what makes a great novel. Ramesses has to fall back on the skills his father, a former policeman, taught him to get get to the bottom of situations that could've easily threatened the secret society that he is a part of; he also has to use those same skills to save his own life. This is the first book I've read of Shakir Rashaan's but it definitey won't be the last. So glad this is a series because the fun is just beginning. Kudos, Mr Rashaan! Enjoyed it!

She also befriended other young ladies who were determined to become professionals in their fields. Everything changed, however, when Mitza fell under the spell of her classmate, Albert Einstein."The Other Einstein" is Marie Benedict's fictional portrayal of the relationship between Mitza and Albert. At first, the two valued and admired one another; Mitza especially enjoyed the high-level intellectual discussions she had with Albert and his inner circle. Unfortunately, many obstacles kept the pair apart, including Albert's inability to find steady employment; parental disapproval; and Albert's self-centeredness and reluctance to make a commitment. The story is told from Mitza's perspective, and most readers will identify with the heroine's anguish at having been teased by classmates because of her pronounced limp; her desire to please her father, who pushed her to study for an advanced physics degree; and, when Albert ultimately convinced her to put him first, her frustration at sacrificing her own fulfillment to further her husband's ambitions.Although Benedict bases this poignant novel on extensive research, she admits that her narrative is largely speculative; it is NOT history or biography. Still, the author effectively recreates the atmosphere in Switzerland, Serbia, and Germany during the late 1800s and early 1900s—a time of class-consciousness and snobbery; sexism; anti-Semitism; strict standards regarding proper behavior between courting couples; and exciting breakthroughs in various disciplines. Mitza's plight infuriates us, not just because she may have been denied credit for her ideas, but also because she tried, in vain, to be a proper wife to an egotistical and childlike husband. "The Other Einstein" is a heartrending account of a brilliant woman who wanted to do her duty, but instead sacrificed her soul.

I did end up liking the book overall and was especially happier about the turn of events at the end of the story. However, I felt the book to be a bit boring and almost repetitive and whiny in regards to Mileva, Einstein's wife or the Other Einstein.When Mileva falls for the persistent Einstein, she is taken in by his affable charm, but he does show his selfish side fairly quickly especially when their daughter becomes gravely ill. It really seems as if he cares about no one except himself never meeting his own daughter and only caring about when Mileva will return to take care of him.Once she returns to him and throws her feelings of sorrow into science, they jointly write many journal articles and theories together with her writing the Theory of Relativity practically alone. Once again, he shows his shelfishness by asking for her name to be removed form all work when he submits it to publishers. But yet he constantly refers to her as "only thinking of herself".Mileva and eventually their two sons often feel neglected by him and although she has merit to be discouraged, much of the book seemed to be whining to me. It may be because I am a modern woman and wanted her to defend herself the entire time taking credit where credit was due and kicking his selfish tush to the curb. With that being said, I was relieved that she finally saw the light and made decisions the second half of her life that finally benefitted her. I knew virtually nothing about the personal side of Albert Einstein so it was enlightening in that way and also made me interested to read a biography of his and Mileva's life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! One of my favorite book styles is to take a lesser known character or event from history and develop a story around it. I enjoy an in-depth researched story, whether it is fiction or non-fiction. The Other Einstein is historical fiction. Warning: if you are a major fan of Albert Einstein, he is not very appealing in this book. Actually, he is portrayed as quite an ass!This book follows the life and career of Mileva Maric, who will eventually become Mrs. Einstein. She is a Serbian girl who has great skill in mathematics and physics. Her father encourages her education, partly because she was born with a limp and the family believes no one will marry her. With her father's help and encouragement, she is accepted at university in Zurich Switzerland. She lives in a pension with three other brilliant girls who are in the city to attend universities. She is the only female in her physics class and the professor does not hide his contempt. Mileva works hard and excels beyond her male peers. Albert Einstein is one of her classmates and he is clearly smitten with her. She resists at first because she wants to be taken seriously as a scholar and because she does not want to derail her education. Albert wears her down, despite the warnings of her best friend Helene. Also, Helene meets and eventually marries a man, thus breaking their pact to remain single and career focused.Albert and Mileva have a wonderful courtship and he treats her as an intellectual equal. They work together. He also pressures her to adopt a Bohemian lifestyle. By Bohemian, he means have sex out of wedlock. She becomes pregnant and has a daughter. She is unable to graduate and does not earn her degree. At this point their relationship slowly disintegrates. Albert is unable to find work, partly due to his arrogant attitude. He refuses to meet his daughter and she dies very young. The death deeply affects Mileva. Albert later marries her, despite the opposition of his family and they have two sons. The relationship sours further.The premise of this story is that Mileva is the one who actually discovered and articulated the Theory of Relativity while she was mourning for her daughter. Albert and Mileva co-write the paper, though he removes her name without her knowledge. He publishes all their work under his name and gives her no credit. He also becomes an increasingly bitter, nasty, egotistical, and vindictive man. Mileva wants a divorce, but that is not an easy thing in the early 1900's.Mileva's real role in the Theory of Relativity is unknown. Among scientists and scholars, some believe she was a sounding board for Albert, others believe that she did the mathematical equations for his theories, and some believe she is the author. I enjoyed this book because I learned about science at the turn of the 20th century. I was enraged at the treatment of women, especially the way that intelligent women were belittled and looked upon with suspicion. There were several times when I was internally screaming at Mileva to grow a spine or at least bash Albert in the head with a book! In other words, the characters and the story evoked strong feelings for me. And that is a sign of a good book!

This book merely takes you through the motions without explaining what you're doing and why. After Effects is a very robust and complicated platform. It requires far more than this book and video tape attempts to provide. I quit at about Chapter 5 as I was starting to feel like a programmed robot listening to the instructor say, "Click on this switch and type 117, then go over to effects and add this effect...Voila!" After finishing each new exercise, it's highly unlikely that you will know what you did to create the video you created. And even if you did, there's a very good chance you won't remember all that was thrown at you. There are no chapter summaries or a glossary of all the effects which would have been extremely helpful. You're better off going to Lynda.com or Udemy if you're serious about learning After Effects.

I hate this book. The author skips over vital details in the chapters, such as 'select layer 1'. Rather he assumes he's covered everything and congratulates the reader for doing a good job at the end of the chapter, while the reader is looking at swirls of garbage and frustration on the screen. This book obviously had no quality control, and this book is careless in instructing the reader.Instead of going back to ensure that he covered all of the details, he inserts little articles of 'Photoshop experts' who given details on non-critical aspects.To use an analogy, consider that you have been given driving instructions to someone's house for a birthday party. You are told to drive North to Street A, then drive West to Street B, then drive North again to Street C, then turn right and the house is the third on the left, with balloons and streamers.To continue the analogy, this book goes into detail about driving North to Street A, BUT it forgets to tell you to drive west to Street B; instead it tells you that you are doing fine and drive to North again to reach Street C. Then you are lost! They forgot to tell you that you had to travel West, so you didn't end up at the birthday party. Instead you ended up on a shady street where crack dealers hijacked your car and insulted your mother.This book is the basis for the course I am currently taking. Had I would have known the poor quality of this book, I would not have taken this class, and I would not have tried to learn Photoshop.

The Classroom in a Book Series excels at mixing in advanced tips even in the most basic lessons and this book is no exception.With a program as big and deep at Photoshop, this book does not attempt to cover every feature, command, filter and technique, but instead covers overall concepts, plus hits on multiple ways to accomplish common tasks and highlights new features. I am an experienced Photoshop user, worked on the creative side of ad agencies for the past 10+ years and use this book as an instructor for a 300 level course at a University. I taught for two years using the earlier edition Adobe Photoshop CS6 Classroom in a Book and noted a significant number of changes, mostly improvements, in the new Creative Cloud 2014 edition of the book. You learn many of the same things as in previous editions, the only real new skills are related to new features of Photoshop but more importantly the lessons themselves are improved. In this new edition it feels like you are not just moving pixels around but making improvements to the photos and layouts. The first four chapters should probably be completed in order, but after that you can start to pick and choose the topics that look most interesting to you. Most lessons clock in right at an hour, which is ideal for a classroom setting, and shorter than the often 90 minute lessons from before. If you like the old fashioned physical DVD with the tutorial files you may want to grab the CS6 or older version of the book, the CC editions of the book require that you create an online account to download the lesson files.CHAPTER 1You learn a good collection of techniques from selections, to basic color correction and adding shapes & text to create a birthday card. The tutorial leaves you feeling like you accomplished something, more so than the Chapter 1 from the CS6 version of the book.CHAPTER 2This lesson highlights the photo correction tools that have made Photoshop famous. A must read, my students left the chapter excited by the opportunities that had been opened. In previous editions, the lesson had the reader change a photo using several of the same tools, but the before and after in this lesson feels more dramatic.CHAPTER 3A very good overview of the multitude of selection tools available in Photoshop. Seasoned professionals are likely to learn at least one thing new.CHAPTER 4The reader builds a postcard/poster by combining several photos while learning about layers, blending modes, gradients and drop shadows. This chapter is one of the few that is virtually unchanged from the CS6 edition of the book.CHAPTER 5Titled "Quick Fixes", chapter five is made up of 7 mini-lessons, this chapter covers a lot of the "How do I..." questions that a new photoshop user might ask, such as how to remove red eye, create a panorama, blur the background, or remove a duck from a photo. This chapter replaces "Correcting and Enhancing Digital Photographs" from previous editions. Some of the techniques from the old chapter 5 that aren't covered in thew new chapter 5 are now covered in chapter 12.CHAPTER 6More advanced features such as using masks and puppet warp. I found this a good chapter to send students down who may already know the basics, while skipping it for the class as a whole.CHAPTER 7This chapter covers typography tools, including ones you'll rarely use.CHAPTER 8The reader will learn a little about the bezier tool in this chapter but there is a little bit too much hand holding. The lesson never really pushes the learner to try the bezier tool on their own without a paint-by-numbers guide. This is one of the few chapters that will take more than an hour.CHAPTER 9The chapter on advanced compositing is fun, slightly cheesy and is well timed in teaching during the fall semester as it has a Halloween theme.CHAPTERS 10-15Dive in to niche uses of Photoshop that are rarely used by most professionals, and not really enough information to become proficient in any of those uses.All in all, Adobe Photoshop CC Classroom in a Book lives up to the strong reputation of the Classroom in a Book series. This was my first "Classsroom in a Book" experience, and I can assure you that this was an amazingly well-led and instructive book to learn with! Because it comes with the PeachPit lessons, you can work through every project using their downloadable lesson content, and really learn much better than just reading something.Every detail is covered so you are never lost without knowing which step to take next, which I have found to be an issue with online or YouTube tutorials that assume even beginners know all of the basics. I enjoyed that every little step, no matter how trivial is detailed with photos and instructions. The book has very little reading and lots of photos/ graphic demonstrations instead, yay! Basically you have a paragraph or two explaining what you are about to do and why, then lots of photos showing you what your screen should look like and the steps to take. Each time you need to complete a step, it repeats how to do it so you don't have to look back through the book to remember how something is done. Jim Henson was a genius. Henson wanted to leave the world a better place and I firmly believe that he did.For myself, I grew up watching him or more specifically, his creations on Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock, adored his films, The Dark Crystal, and Labyrinth. There was little in our world as kids that Jim Henson wasn't a part of. My son was just two years old when Jim Henson died of complications from pneumonia. I never cry for "celebrity" deaths, but I cried my eyes out when Jim passed because I felt as if I lost a member of the family.This book gives some real insights into how driven and intensely creative Jim Henson the man was. It is set up in many ways like a journal because Jim Henson was the kind of person whose intense creativity required him to make copious notes in his journal which he called his Red Book. He would journal about EVERYTHING from family events to such as when the kids started school got a dog or went on vacations around the world as a family. Particularly fascinating were his collaborations with other artists that included long-time partner Frank Oz as well as with other creative geniuses like Vincent Price, George Lucas, Brian Froud and David Bowie in the creation of the cult-classic, Labyrinth.Jim Henson used to make handwritten notes which he would often place beside sketches of his ideas. He would spruce these up with colored pencils or markers and would make notes as to when he talked to other fellow creatives. He would also cross-reference from one journal to the next when he started a new one at the beginning of each year. I found it really kind of sad but interesting that in spite of the incredible success he had created through the Sesame Street ventures and their vast popularity and name-recognition that he, Jim actually had difficulty in getting the Muppet Show funded! Knowing how much bigger it all became after the Muppet Show, the movies featuring the Muppets and the later merger with Disney, all of this just sounds so unbelievable!Those who are super inspired and interested in the work and person of Jim Henson can see where all of his journals, photos, and other materials are being housed at the University of Mississippi. If you cannot make it there, this book gives a wonderful insight into Jim Henson's life and work.

There have been plenty of books which talk of his genius, or his roots, but there have been no books that get to his process, or show exactly what his mind was thinking of and how he translated that to paper--until now. Imagination Illustrated is the perfect book for the creative or Henson fan in your life.Detailing specific events he jotted down in his many notebooks throughout the course of his life, Imagination Illustrated also shows different ideas and pictures of the things found inside Henson's head as his ideas went from brain to paper. Sometimes they weren't amazing, and other times they turned out far better than anyone could have hoped. This is an inspiring tome for those with a journal, or those who have a creative dream.

As a fan of the blog "Jim's Red Book," I've always wanted to see it turn into an actual book. My prayers have been answered. The book features notes from Jim Henson's journal that he compiled from 1954 to 1988. The real joy is seeing rarely seen photos and material from The Jim Henson Company Archives.Despite the major Muppet brands being owned by three companies (Henson, Disney, Sesame Workshop), it is wonderful that they cooperated to give Muppet fans a detailed and comprehensive look behind-the-scenes at all the Muppet productions, with thoughts from Jim himself. Complete with sketches and exciting photos of Henson characters and staff, Imagination Illustrated is a real treat. Any real Muppet/Jim Henson fan will want this book. My only complaint is that the Henson Archives is probably so vast, not everything could fit into this book. I propose a sequel.

The book contains a lot of interesting information about Jim Henson's early career that most people are too young to have seen firsthand. This includes early television shows and his work in commercials. There is also plenty of concept art used to develop characters and sets. I would have liked to see more details on certain subjects, but given how long and varied Jim Henson's career was that would be impractical.

Amazing book. I bought this book to follow along with while I listened to the amazing biography by Brian Jay Jones. When I found this, I expected to pay $50+ for it. It's a great price with a wealth of history for any thorough Henson fan.

I bought this for a student who loves Jim Henson. He can't put it down! The pages are full of beautiful, full-color photographs. The text gives you a glimpse into the fine minds at the Jim Henson studio. Appropriate for late elementary through high school students.

I recommend this book without any reservation to both Muppet fans and archivists. It is a terrific compilation of Jim Henson's career as viewed through his 1965-1988 journal of notable events in his personal and commercial life.Karen Falk must have one of the best jobs in the world :)
