This is a fantastic book. I want to try some of the stuff I've learned here regarding surviving in the bush during my summer hiking trips. Hopefully it is out of curiosity and not out of necessity due to an emergency! Now, why did I buy this? We live in a very, very fragile society. Most people do not know this but grocery stores only have about 3-days worth of food stocked on their shelves meaning that if those semi-truck and trains were to stop coming just about every town in the good old U.S.A. would be out of food after a 3-day weekend. This book gives some tips on how to survive in the bush, very true, but it also teaches one how to simply survive. Something that nearly all American's have forgotten how to do with our everyday reliance on Starbucks, McDonalds, and Walmart.Highly recommended for anyone that goes rough country extended hiking and camping (real camping not that RV "stuff"), hunting, and/or just wants to be prepared if the lights go out. :)

With a good editor, this could be a good book.But as is, it covers too many topics, from how to deal with computer viruses (keep your software updated, use an anti-virus program) to warnings about scurvy ('always aim for a balanced diet'). There are pages devoted to wood-boring insects. There's an illustration of a Corgi.Worse, the book is shallow in its investigation of useful options. For emergency winter survival, it's odd to recommend an igloo (slow to make, hard to construct without a snow saw, and tough to complete in poor conditions) but to omit mention of a snow trench (fast, easy, and warm enough to shelter me on many trips), or even a snow-cave, a simple compromise.And the information shared has no filter. A beginner has no way of parsing the laundry-list of knots to prioritize a square knot (essential) over a Killick hitch (easily replaced by more versatile alternatives); there's no mention at all of how to make an improvised harness, despite several sections on emergency climbing and rappelling. In the section in explosions, Wiseman advises ways to safely exit a building before the spread of fire, but then says 'If you are caught in an explosion in a building, then stay there until safe to do so' [sic], without further explanation.Finally, it's unreliable. There are pure factual errors (people cannot survive 12 days without water, even in cool temperatures) and frequent mixing of good and poor advice (crossing a river in a group one behind the other is terrible, exposing each to the full force of the water, while crossing in a line facing downstream, with arms interwoven, is universally recommended).I don't write many reviews, and even fewer poor reviews - why disparage something others enjoyed? But this is meant to be a practical book, and it sets the bar too low. Pare it down and keep the information accurate. At half the length this could be twice as valuable.Here are links to better books on the areas discussed. But I prefer Buck Tilton's, in part because I did my Wilderness EMT training with him, but also for their concise explanations. If you are like me you want to have solid survival and bushcraft knowledge on you when you go hiking. I know some basics but if a real situation happened there is no way I would what to do beyond try to build a fire. The full-size SA Survival Handbook is incredible, but it is a large book and pretty heavy for a day hike pack. To my delight, there is a "pocket guide", or a small guide that will fit nicely into your pack. Sure you can get information on your phone, but phones die, service can be spotty or gone. This is a nice piece of confidence to carry with you!I would certainly recommend​ this book as a daily hiking carry!

There's no question that there's a ton of useful information in this very big book, but there are also commonly-accepted but erroneous myths that the author hasn't personally verified. And you the reader probably can't tell which is which without a scientific background. It's really bad for a survival book to make and perpetuate that sort of mistake.Essentially any time the author talks about magnetism, electricity, static, and their phenomena, he's wrong.One example is the author's instruction to magnetize a ferrous wire by rubbing silk against it in one direction only, so that it can be used as a compass needle. He is obviously confusing electrostatic and electromagnetic phenomena. The author does mention that the effect of silk is weak and that if you rub it with a magnet it will work better, but doesn't seem to realize that the magnetizing effect of silk (and static electricity in general) is non-existent and that if the wire works as a compass at all, it's because it is already slightly magnetized. People who have performed the experiment of magnetizing by rubbing silk say it doesn't work, and that's what physics would predict as well.Yes, I know that many books and thousands of web pages perpetuate the same myth. The reality is that most ferrous objects get magnetized naturally simply by being in the Earth's magnetic field. One experimenter found that 75% of needles he purchased in stores would work as a compass without any effort to magnetize them. But rubbing silk (or hair, or anything else you can expect to produce a static electric field), doesn't change them.Another example is the author's statement that wet matches are dried by placing them in your hair, because of the static electricity in your hair. Static electricity doesn't dry things, your hair absorbs the water or wicks it away.It's almost as if someone with a scientific background told these yarns to poorly-educated survivalists just to play a trick on them.

I enjoyed Kent Hartman's book about the Wrecking Crew. This one is also enjoyable. Those who are young enough to not remember the days before digital music may find this to be an entertaining look back to when vinyl was king and everyone seemed to have a favorite record store.

I recall reading the first book in this series during my middle/high school years, it was one of my favorites, it turned me on to most of Christopher Pike's other novels. I still enjoy the first book, so I was happy to find the trilogy in one singular book for a decent price. I should have just gotten the first book and left it at that. Though the first in this series wasn't the most complicated read, it was still enjoyable and invoked some emotion in me, the second was somewhat emotional too, though not as good, and the third was literally garbage, I'm not sure how else to put it. If you must read this, skip the third book altogether, maybe even the second one if you find the ending of the first to be substantial enough for you.

I love the first book. The second is pretty good, but not great. The third one is just awful. I love most of Pike's books, but the last two in this series are seriously lacking. I gave it four stars just for the first book.However, if you've only read the first book, it's certainly worth buying this to give the other two a shot. I think my issue is that the first book was just so good that it's a tough act to follow.

SHE WON'T LET THEM FORGET.Shari Cooper wakes up dead. The last thing she can remember is falling from the balcony during her friend's party. Her death was ruled a suicide, but Shari knows she was mudered-and her closest friends are now suspects. As she tries to find her killer from the other side, she discovers her friends may not have been so loyal to her after all. Now Shari is not just out for justice, she's out for revenge...I would highly reccomend only reading "Remember Me". "The Return" is okay, not great, but readable "The Last story" is absolutely wretched! I could not finish it.In "Remember Me" I felt like I wae Shari Cooper, her feelings felt so real. At first Shari just seemed like a complete snob; but as her character developed, I also began to realize that maybe I misjudged her. She is powerful and inspiring character.Which brings me to Peter! He never made me doubt him. I felt from th beginning that he was going to help Shari. He is an amazing character, compasionate, forgiving, flawed; everything that you expect in a character. And these two together, Wow!This book has a powerful message. To always remember your love ones when they are gone.Now "The Return" it intrigued me that there was a second book, so I read it. Not as big of a mistake as reading the last one. I would never reccomend reading "The Return" but if you must than it's an okay book."The Last Story" Aweful. I could not finish it. There was no point to it, it was just stupid. I really have no review for this other than boring.

I loved Remember Me when I was younger. I can remember reading it multiple times when it came out, and I've reread it occasionally since then (I still have my original copy). I had no idea there had been sequels to it until I randomly decided to look up the author on the internet after rereading it again recently. With how much I had liked Remember Me, I decided to go ahead and buy this and read the sequels too.Remember Me is still a good book, though it's geared towards YA readers. (I do enjoy it even still as an adult, though that could partially be because I read it when I was younger.) I'd definitely recommend that one, it's a pretty good book. I actually would have been perfectly happy had there never been a continuation of it, even though I enjoyed it, because it ties everything up fairly well and it's one of those books you end up thinking it'd be difficult to write a good sequel to. The two sequels, The Return and The Last Story, pretty much just prove that true.The first sequel, The Return, isn't awful, but it isn't great either. I was able to get through the whole thing and it was okay, though it felt somewhat unnecessary to the original story. Sure, it's great to see Shari, Peter, and Jimmy again (the primary characters you'll end up seeing from the previous book), but I was pretty happy with how things had ended in the previous one. And I just don't love Jean Rodrigues and her friends enough to invest in them much. The back and forth between Shari and Jean runs the risk of being confusing for some, but I didn't have too much of an issue with it. But ultimately, it's just a meh sequel to a good book.The Last Story continues from The Return, and I just didn't enjoy it at all. Honestly, I wasn't desperate to continue after how blah The Return had been, and this one doesn't improve the story at all. It actually makes it a bit more complex and confusing, and the sci-fi stuff in it was not desperately enjoyable to me. (And I do enjoy a good sci-fi/fantasy book.) It gets even more oddly mystical/confusing than The Return, which had some mystical, but not so much as to start getting weirdly confusing, and ultimately I just skimmed the last half of the book. Beyond the confusion, it was just starting to drag and was starting to feel as though it was just an attempt to make it longer. Some people will end up being disappointed with parts of the ending as well, though I don't want to give any of it away.Ultimately, I'd definitely recommend Remember Me. If you really, really want to continue from that one, The Return is okay. But just skip The Last Story. Both it and The Return are unnecessary, The Last Story even more unnecessary than The Return. I stopped reading Christopher Pike books around 1991 (Bury Me Deep is one of the last I remember reading, which is probably why I hadn't heard of these until now), so while I can't comment on anything beyond that point, I'd recommend several of the books published before then. Beyond Remember Me, I especially enjoyed the Final Friends series, though there are other good ones as well.

The thing is, the first bookMagnificent, gave me SHIVERS<3I loved it best thing i've read in awhileI got to the second one...okay its not bad, its notIts pretty good if you can keep up with the confusion that goes on.One minute its Shari, next Jean, next Shari, next your confused on who's who.The third one..I'm sorry but I couldn't even finish, I couldn't like it anymore.The first one left you wanting more, but hella satisfied.Its just a big pit of disappointment by the third one, I no longer craved to read it. I finished the second one curious and on the edge. I flew past the first one, bragging of the amazing writing. Then the third one after the 8th chapter I couldn't do it.Maybe i'll pick it up another time, but until then I'm satisfied.

I am not sure I have enough superlatives to describe this book. If someone living in Florida has even a passing interest in the world around them, they should run to order it. All of us actually have a responsibilty to know the basics that Tonya Clayton so clearly descibes here. We need to know not just to satisfy our curiosity, but also to be able to make informed decisions about issues relating to everything from conservation, to community decision-making regarding development and coast management, to newspaper articles and discussions regarding coastal insurance costs and changes, etc.Packed with information, and yet incredibly readable, this book will open up the magic (and the terror) of the constantly changing Florida Gulf coast. If you have experienced the coast changing under your feet you will be fascinated by the descriptions even though you probably already have a better than decent respect for how impermanent the coast is. For those who have never seen the Gulf coast before and after an overwash or inundation, this book should give you a heads up!I read the book with satellite maps at hand. It was useful to go look at what was being described. I would suggest a hardcopy so you can see the book photos with the text and easily navigate pages and photos. You WILL end up wanting to revisit decriptions and photos as you learn more.I originally got the kindle version then got hardcopy for ease of use.Thank you Tonya Clayton for this amazing book!

Very interesting and informative book. I would have preferred more emphasis on the Cedar Keys/Suwannee Sound area, but that is an area of personal interest, and perhaps more space will be devoted to it in a future edition. In any event, the comment is in no way intended to detract from the value of the book.

It's enjoyable if you have interest in a sampling of environmental books and scholars. Required for a class on environmentalism and was an enjoyable read.

In that I mean that it's hard to follow without a degree in the subject. I don't have a degree, so I just never finished the book.

This book considers beaches and barrier islands from the Alabama border to the tip of Florida. Most of the book is about specific beaches, describing the processes of beach formation and stability. While it could be used as a general intro to beach dynamics, its main interest will be Floridians and others interested in the Gulf beaches. The processes generally would be similar in the other Gulf states. The book emphasizes that beaches are dynamic, a result of the interactions of sea level, sand (or other materials), wind, geography (the angle of the coast interacts with prevailing winds, for example, with effects on beaches).The chapters I found most interesting are Chapter 3 "Shorelines in Motion," Chapter 4 "Dunes,"; Chapter 6 "Ephemera," (this would include tidal traces, marks in the sand from birds, ripple marks and such); and Chapter 8, "Beach Remodeling" (which discusses beach replenishment and other human constructions, and their impact on beaches).Among the things mentioned are ghost forests. These have standing stumps or trees on the beach, and are the ghosts of forested areas destroyed by encroaching beaches. "Paleotempestology" is a concept I'd not read about before, but is the study of old storms, that is seeing evidence of their impact on beaches. I also had never read of the "meteotsunami," when water and atmospheric waves keep in phase and create a kind of rogue tsunami. And, global warming will have a huge impact on beaches, with a 20 to 40 inch sea level rise expected in the next 9 decades.The "Reading" part of the title is for serious readers, who can study the descriptions and the photographs of the phenomenon described, and then go to the beach and look. This book isn't exactly a field guide but the seriously interested could use it that way. Overall it is less how to read than here's how science reads what has happened.

Napalm & Silly Putty Hardcover – April 24, 2001George Carlin is a hoot. I keep this around the coffee table. Many pick it up and look at it for a while, for a laugh. Sometimes it takes only a few moments and they laugh. Sometimes longer before they get the gist of what it is, they just got handed to them about a topic that is so obvious, after George would let you in on the humor of his mind's view of what he sees. I miss having him around. I hope he is well now, floating around the universe wise cracking on all that is out there.

Carlin fans will find most of the material in this book familiar as it is also seen in his stand-up (which is okay, most comedians do that).The nice things about the book is that its written in a variety of styles and in short sections...so it makes for an easy pick it up and read a bit anytime.(but that also means nothing may grab you to finish the entire book quickly) There are no real chapters nor table of contents and the subject matter changes frequently (even aside from the breaks of "short takes" which are much like his "Brain Droppings" one sentence observations)Some of the material is thought provoking, some of it is just silly. Some of it is just thrown out there to see what bites and move on. You will find yourself laughing aloud, especially when caught off guard by an absurd "short take".To appreciate the humor, I also found it helpful to really have Carlin's voice and delivery style in your head (watch a recent HBO special to get familiar with it). Without that definite "Carlin" rythm, you may miss the pure comedy to the writing.Overall, you will find this smart comedy and although some of it seems quickly assembled, it does contain purpose and thought.A word of warning: For those not familiar with Mr.Carlin, there is a fair share of obscene language, religious satire, and other possibly offensive subject matter. With that all said, enjoy!

I have been a HUGE Carlin fan since I was first introduced back in high school in 2003. My one regret in my life thus far is not seeing him live when I have 2 opportunities to do so.That being said, if you are a Carlin fan you must have this book. If you are a Carlin fan you must have Braindroppings and When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops as well.I have read each book numerous times and when I read them I can hear his voice saying it outloud. A must have for any Carlin fan.

George Carlin is one of the few things my dad and I have in common (which gets him bonus points because my dad and I are as similar as night and day). Napalm and SIlly Putty essentially covers all areas of his ranting - religion, airline safety, the government, and others - with nothing really *new*. However, the rants themselves have been updated and redone to cover new areas of complaint.This probably isn't the best work he's done, but I think it's awesome nonetheless. I highly recommend it for any Carlin fan. However, if you have "Your Are All Diseased" on CD, it's nothing new, but it includes more things that aren't on the CD. Buy it to complete or start a collection and I think you'll be amused.

Napalm And Silly Putty is very similar to Brain Droppings and When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops so my thoughts on it are similar to those books. It's hilarious, short, fun, and covers a massive variety of topics from politics to things that we all think about but never say. Carlin recycles some of his stand-up in this book but it is still fun to read and, unless you've seen all of his HBO specials multiple times like I have, you might not notice. Good for getting a laugh and for taking a break from novels that actually have a story.

Crude and rude kind of guy, quite self-centered and overly opinionated and narcissistic which perhaps is what one needs to be as a stand up comedian.

I bought this book for my husband, but he was disappointed. I guess the humor was too lame.

Carlin has been around for an awful long time and he is still a very funny man. He comes across like an philosopher except really angry and bitter about things in the world. However, because I identify with a lot of the things he says, he can not be far from reality.Some of the material in this book is from stand-up routines Carlin has done. Some of the stuff is really fresh. I really enjoyed Carlin's expose on the camcorder. Some people just don't know when to stop filming. How can people possibly watch all of thehome movies from their meaningless lives.I liked reading bits and peices of this book just to brighten up my day. It reads well this way. Overall, well worth the price!

I compare this to his other book (Brain Droppings), and get left with a bad taste in my mouth. I feel that Brain Droppings is probably 80% new material, whereas this book is maybe only 40% new material. Almost everything in it I had heard before. This disappointed me deeply. Not only that, but reading the book is much better, Carlin's book on cd was mostly kind of boring, as he did it much less emotionally than he does his live standup. If you read it, you can actually see him doing the standup in your head. So I do not recommend the cd version, go with the book, but only if you don't mind getting a rehash of older material.
