Just a quick warning for anybody tempted to buy the e-book version: diagrams are missing (with a label saying they're not licensed for electronic use,) and the formatting of the e-book is bad. You'll have a diagram on one page, and the labels on another, so you have to constantly flip back and forth. If you want Dyce, stick with the paper book version for now, until the publishers can actually figure out how to put an e-book together well.

If this book is listed as optional for a class you should buy it. The images are well done, and the text is fairly well organized. I am not a big fan of how they made a section for things that are constant across species, and then another section for detail. This means that you need to look in two places to look something up. However, if the text was done the way I wanted it they would have to make the text 6 inches thick!

While Big Miller's is more in depth, and often provides more diagrams, Dyce is the text I continue to come back to when I need an introduction to or an overview of a system. It is extremely easy to read, full of helpful diagrams, specific where it needs to be, and general where it doesn't. It has a general anatomy section, as well as individual sections for species of importance, including dogs/cats, horses, ruminants, swine, and poultry. A clear favorite among myself and classmates, they are often all out at the library.Dyce will not name all the prominences of every bone or every single detail of each system, but it will do so in enough detail that you understand the little things, while also getting the whole picture. I just wish it had more diagrams sometimes!

Fabulous! I spent hours just flipping through. Very detailed and the pictures are great. Wish there more, as it is an anatomy book, but I loved it nonetheless.

One of the best veterinary anatomy books. Recommended by many professors this book goes into great detail regarding the various organ systems in the multiple species. I like the categories, the images and the text which is well written.

This is an excellent resource for current & future vets. I purchased it for my daughter who is a senior in high school wanting to become a vet. It is definitely a 3rd or 4th year college level textbook in that there is much information that it assumes the reader already knows. There are NO glossaries or end of chapter review questions. It is simply a reading textbook or educational resource, and is quite exhaustive in its amount & depth of content. However, she is loving reading through it!

I just recently bought this book, since I was accepted into Veterinary Summer Program. It content is very self explanatory. Great pictures, chapter are divided appropiately and best of all, you will use it during your whole carrer of Veterinary Medicine. I bought by reference of a friend Currently studying veterinary medicine at Tuskegee Veterinary School. I strongly recommend this books.

Completely splendid. I was a little worried about how this would end. I've loved the first two books, and after the last Harry Potter book ended a series I loved with a book I can barely tolerate, I'm leery of getting my hopes up too high. Even another of Westerfeld's trilogies, Midnighters, ended on what I thought of as kind of a bittersweet note, and I don't like bittersweet. With Midnighters, I wanted to see more because I wasn't satisfied with the ending. But with this book, I was pleased to be completely satisfied with how it ended, both the love story aspect and the rest of the plot. I'd still love to see more, of course. The story ends in such a way that the lives of Alek and Deryn definitely seem worth reading about, though as a trilogy called 'Leviathan', it's a definite ending. I would love to see more of this story. Perhaps he'll feel like writing another trilogy about Alek and Deryn, maybe picking it up during World War II, if it even happens in this world. I doubt he'll write more in this world, but if he does, I'll be eager to read it. It's been an amazing story, and a rare one in that my favorite characters are actually the main characters (usually I find myself preferring one or more of the side characters). This series is definitely one I would recommend to anyone who'll listen.As far as the reading (since I listened to the audiobook), that is also very well done. Alan Cumming is quite talented, and being able to hear all the various accents and languages that pop up throughout the story helps bring them to live and set the stage better than just reading the words. My only complaint is the way he reads Americans. His accent is simply ridiculous, and all the Americans, male and female, sound exactly the same. I guess it wouldn't have bothered me so much if it was just the reporter who sounded so farcical, but every American we meet had the same ludicrous accent. One small annoyance I had with an otherwise outstanding performance.To sum up, if you haven't read this series, do so (in order, of course), and if you've read the previous two and are wondering if this book gives a satisfying ending, yes, it really does (though it also gives the sense that the story goes on, but without failing to resolve any of the major storylines).

A simple rescue mission turns into a trip around the world escorting the infamous scientist Nicola Tesla, who may have the ultimate weapon for putting a stop to the war but at a terrible cost. Alek has finally figured out Deryn's secret and feels betrayed, confused. How can his feelings for Dylan Sharp translate to Deryn Sharp? But there's no time to think about this! With secrets revealed, old allies appearing, terrible inventions and incoming old enemies, Goliath makes for one electrifying finale to Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan trilogy!Deryn and Alek have come a long, long way since they first met in the freezing glacier where the Leviathan crash landed. They've kept each other's secret, helped each other, and saved each other countless of times. Deryn mostly does the rescuing, but now the tables are sort of turned now with Deryn having to be rescued a couple of times by Alek. It really comes in handy having someone know her secret. I've really enjoyed seeing these two characters grow through the series, and in Goliath they have to make some serious decisions. Will Alek pursue his throne, and leave Deryn behind? Will Deryn continue as a middy on the airship Leviathan and continue risking being discovered?This trilogy has been amazing from the very beginning. I'll never forget the beasties, especially the Leviathan, Tazza, and Bovril, the perspicacious loris. The Clanker machines were also incredible especially thanks to Keith Thompson and his breathtaking illustrations. The original vocabulary also made for a fun read. I would so use those curse words every single day, because barking spiders this has seriously been one of the best trilogies I've ever read. Goliath brought old allies and contraptions, but also new ones like Russian fighting bears, Japanesse Kappas, a Herculean, underwater fiber system, manta airships, and many more that just made me wish this series was longer! I'm extremely sad that it ended, and I hate leaving this world and these characters behind. I'll definitely come back to re-read this in the future.I've been saying it all along, and I'll say it again... This is steampunk at its best!!!

For example, the story of author Donna and photographer Martin Seim’s trip unfolds with tales of landing a puddle-jumper airplane among a herd of wildebeests and strict rules from their guides about not wandering alone into the wild. It makes for engaging reading that is pleasing to the eye as well. Ehrman argues for two theses, one practical and one more abstract.The practical thesis can be summarized as: We do not possess any of the original writings of the New Testament, and the copies we have are riddled with negligent and/or intentional alterations. Therefore, the New Testament we read today, which is based upon numerous altered copies, is not very close to the original text. And if the original text is the Word of God, the Word of God is lost.The abstract thesis can be summarized as: For any text, both the author's and the reader's subjective beliefs and experiences condition the meaning of the words, and therefore color the interpretation of the text. As a result, there is no such thing as an objectively true interpretation of a text. The search for the "correct" meaning is fruitless. Therefore, no one can claim to know the true meaning of the text of the New Testament.The upshot? The New Testament we read today is of human, and not divine, origin (practical thesis), and, in any event, any claim to "the One True Interpretation" is in principle false (abstract thesis).I will not take a stand on Ehrman's claims but hope I've faithfully outlined them for people deciding whether to purchase the book. I am familiar with but not well-versed in either the New Testament or textual criticism. Nonetheless, I found his arguments and analysis easy to track. The broad historical information was interesting, and the biblical passages he focuses on to illustrate his points are engaging instead of arcane. Some may consider this book anti-religious, but Ehrman's tone is respectful and honest, not polemical. For such a short, accessible book, the reader can gain a lot from reading it.

A well written book about the evolution of the Bible, particularly the New Testament, and how our present text came to be in all its various forms. Dr. Ehrman begins with a brief summary of his own life. From an "ordinary kid" he becomes a fundamentalist Christian believing the Bible to be wholly inspired. During his graduate program in a Christian school he develops an interest in the wide variety of historical documents that have, through many generations come down to us a our present Bible. He becomes, in short, a textual-scholar, and has an epiphany!Ehrman quickly learns that there are no longer any "original texts" anywhere. The earliest texts found, more fragmented the farther back one goes, come from the 2nd century some 100 years after Jesus' death. None of the original Apostles, nor Paul are any longer alive at that point, and what early notes exist for geographically fragmented communities are already copies of lost originals. Even if the literal-original writing was "inspired by God" as fundamentalists claim, by the opening of the 2nd century the earliest copies of these writings have already passed through human hands and the real originals are no more. Except for the Christian community of Alexandria where professional scribes already existed, all of the early copies were made by amateur believers who, as it happened could read and write, and so copied texts for their congregations; sometimes well and sometimes poorly. It was not until late in the 4th century that more professional scribes assumed the copyist role.Roughly the first half of the book is taken up with the history of textual criticism. Ehrman leads us through early (17th century) classification attempts and the techniques developed to determine which texts were "more original" than others. Ehrman notes that in many many cases even that matter cannot be decided with any finality. That the modern obsession with the text began after the Reformation is no accident. Protestant scholars were far more compulsive about the text than Catholics. Protestant theology and doctrine rests entirely on the text, while Catholicism has its priestly class for precisely the task of interpreting the text in what ever form it takes. By the 18th century, scholars had identified some 30,000 textual variations in the manuscripts that come together as the then relatively stabilized New Testament.Most of these variations were simply mistakes made by non-professional copyists. Sometimes they left out a word or whole sentences. Sometimes what there were of literal originals were physically degraded even when first copied. Copyists sometimes had to "fill in the blanks", a smudged word, or a bleed-through from some earlier text on the page for example. So why not go back to the more professional Alexandrian texts and call those "closest to original"? Because while the vast majority of changes were copy errors, not all were merely that. Here and there changes were made for theological and socio-political reasons. In point of fact (something he does not mention) the Alexandrian scholars were among those who, by the early 5th Century, were considered among the heretical sects by the then solidifying Roman Church. Ehrman does not mention is the textual difference between the modern Western (Roman) and Eastern (Greek and Eastern European "Orthodox") churches. His aim is historical, and he does cover the early Greek texts whose alterations became mixed in with all of the others.In the second half of the book Ehrman covers three types of changes made deliberately by one group of copyists or another so as to make the text easier to read and better line up with the various theological opinions and social controversies of the time, each propounded by groups of believers who were doing their own copying! In the end, Ehrman is forced to conclude that even the lost originals were probably not autodidacts (texts dictated by God) because if God had wanted Christians to have his un-corrupted words in perpetuity, He would have made sure the originals survived.I gave the book 5 stars not because the book's subject was of great interest to me, but because Dr. Ehrman does such a marvelous job of treating a scholarly subject (many many references are provided) with easy to read language aimed at non-scholars of the subject like myself.

As a textual critic, Erhman does a thorough job of illustrating the meandering path the New Testament has taken from the original writings to what we read today. I don’t challenge his work as a critic and can easily accept the multitude of errors, amendments, exclusions, and modifications he presents. However, ones faith system doesn't necessarily depend on the validity of a virgin birth, the exact definition of the Trinity, or other miracles & orthodoxy. While one can’t deny these things, one can’t exactly confirm them either. That’s where Erhman loses me. He connects textual variations with a denial of orthodoxy – essentially, since God isn’t acting the way he expects, he abandons faith and uses textual criticism as proof. I don’t get that at all. There are hundreds of books about Abraham Lincoln. Some of them are near works of fiction and even the best have historical errors and bad assumptions. That doesn’t mean that Lincoln wasn’t the 16th President and never spoke at Gettysburg. I know the weight placed on the New Testament is much greater than any Lincoln biography, but that would seem to be a reason to extract what one can from the works rather than abandon them. It’s possible that the different gospels were included because they provided a different point of view. Maybe Mark was more data driven than Matthew and that difference allows another angle on Jesus’ teachings. I’m glad I read the book and appreciate Erhman’s scholarship, but I challenge his conclusions.

These block responses are ridiculous. I'd rather describe the book as "enjoyable"...the mood as "free-form"...the pace as "just right"...and the characters as "iconic-with-a-twist".

Taking into account the genre-crossing that Scott Pilgrim pulled of by bringing together elements of video games, anime, manga, and American comics, Sharknife is a bad-ass kung-fu superhero for the Nintendo generation! Think, Viewtiful Joe meets Kung-Pow: Enter The Fist. Creator Corey Lewis has worked on projects like this before with the American comic adaptation of the Rival Schools game, or his own comic of Peng.Gung-ho busboy Caesar Hallelujah works at the Guangdong Factory which is a multi-layered restaurant that is constantly being attacked by his adopted brother Ombra Ravenga who keeps sending wave after wave of "monster-of-the-week" to topple the competition. Win evil monsters show up, Caesar gets a fortune cookie from his sexy fly love interest Chieko, and transforms into the superhero Sharknife to stop the daily terror. Caesar was granted his power by a strange ancient shark god, while Ombra was also given the powers of an orca. Once Caesar eventually defeats a hundred monsters, he is given the powers of Double Z, although Ombra uses this power to level up too.This is a profoundly unexpected surprise for otaku and video games alike. The story is engaging enough, even though it has a bunch of stereotypes thrown in that actually make it work. You'll catch some crossing over with Lewis' Peng comic too as both stories take place in the same universe. BTW, there are two versions of the first volume, the second one is a reprint titled Stage First features additional material, including stuff from Oni Press' Free Comic Book Day specials. If Street Fighter consumed your Saturday nights as a teen, then you will be all fired up for this one!

Man, this book was action packed with CRAZY art & comedy all the way through it! I bought the next 1 also, & I hope there’s a 3rd on the way!

I heard about this comic after reading a blog post on penny-arcade (a famous webcomic on the net), I was surprised and entertained by the pages and pages of unnarrated fresh style. It's a fight comic and you'll find pages and pages of just action from time to time.I don't read many comics but I would read many comics like this. I'm eagerly awaiting vol 2. Amazon has it listed with a date but no preorder button.

It's a really fun comic book created by Corey Lewis! If you love video games, and action, check this out! The only reason I'm deducting a star is because some others have voiced concerns about the story and there were some scenes where Corey packed so much action in there it's hard to tell what's going on. Which is good and bad I suppose. But I've also read the sequel Double Z and the plot gets a lot more fleshed out in it, along with keeping it a little more under control. Definitely check this comic out for a good time, and so you'll be caught up in the Sharknife Universe, because I'm sure Corey's got more great comics coming up you're not gonna want to miss.

Some flaws work the writing here and there and the plot can be ignored for the most part but the art is a treat.get this if you like manga and video game inspired comics

a great story to read

I'll be honest, I bought this book on a whim because it popped up in my suggestions, little did I know how much trouble I would have putting it down! This comic is cover-to-cover fun, high speed, monster fighting action! The artwork is amazing, it brings a sense of energy into every bit of this comic, and the dialogue sounds like it's coming out of the mouths of real people. The premise is unlike anything I've seen before, and I mean that in the best way. If you love anime & manga inspired work akin to Scott Pilgrim, filled with robots, monsters, gangsters, sharks, Asian cuisine and video game references then make some space on your bookshelf and get this graphic novel now!
