This book was excellent and well written. Great descriptions that took me to the places described in Norway. Horrendous survival story. Like none I have ever heard of. It was hard to put down. Anyone who picks it up will love reading it and living through some of the experiences with the heroes and others involved. The Norwegion people who worked to save this man were amazing and so heroic and determined. The young man's name escapes me at the moment, but to me any other person would have given up hope. He did not and survived to tell the tale. This was one of the best true story books I have read in a while.

I loved this book.It's about Jan Baalsrud, a Norwegian. He begins WWII as a courier between Stockholm and Oslo, gets caught by the Swedes, imprisoned, and then manages to make his way to England and join a group of other Norwegians being trained to return to their country and fight the Nazis. That's where the book begins, with Jan and the other men on his mission approaching the Norwegian coast. Their plan is to hide their sabotage gear, train local groups to resist the Nazis, and then attack a German airfield that's wrecking havoc on convoys between England and the Soviet Union. But their plans fall apart pretty quickly, and Jan soon finds himself alone in the snow with nothing but his clothing, his pistol, and one boot. What follows is how he survives and eventually makes it back to Sweden, with a lot of help along the way.I was initially interested in this book because of its title. I like titles with the words like "death" or "die" or "dead" in them. But the title isn't entirely accurate: Jan doesn't die (comes close several times). And the people who do die don't die alone--there's usually at least a gestapo agent around.But enough about the title. Jan is brave and resourceful and he can ski like something else. But then events leave him gradually more and more at the mercy of others, and the tough commando becomes vulnerable. Howarth did a wonderful job of finding an amazing story, researching it thoroughly, and then writing it in a way that uses good principles of storytelling so that this true story reads like a novel.We Die Alone is one of those books I recommend for just about everyone. Readers that enjoy Unbroken or The Long Walk may be especially interested in adding this to their to-read list.

There are so many other reviews that I won't even bother discussing the main events in this book. Suffice it to say that it is among the most incredible tales of survival that you will ever read, fiction or non-fiction. Jack London would have been afraid to submit such an outlandish tale to his publishers.That said, a few thoughts:1. I found the actions of the local Norwegian "Resistance Movement" almost more interesting than the actual tale. To be caught helping Baalsrud was an act the occupying Nazis would have punished severely, both the actual person that did it, his family and maybe even the whole village. And yet the local villagers were, for the most part, not intimidated. The bigger concern seemed to be that if too many people found out about the rescue effort, their attempts to help would be noticed by the Nazi occupiers and raise suspicions.2. Even more amazing, people in the next village were recruited based just on a request from a respected member of the first village. All this, without the use of a telephone, which was probably tapped by the Germans. Imagine your reaction if someone you don't know showed up at your door and said that so-and-so from the next town over wants you to climb a mountain in a blizzard and rescue someone...nevermind that the Germans will kill you and your family if you get caught...just do it.3. Baalsrud spends several weeks in a snow cave on the Norwegian "Outback", sometimes completely buried, with very limited supplies of food, fresh water, blankets or medical supplies. I am not sure I believe this is even possible, but yet the author seems to have done a credible job of researching the story. There are multiple sources for research material, and a credible looking timeline. Either Baalsrud is capable of hibernating, or memories have been corrupted in the ten years between the events and the story being told. I would believe either scenario.4. As many have pointed out, the editing and proofreading on this book were horrible. These sorts of errors ruin my reading experience, and most times I would abandon reading a book with this level of problems. In this instance, the story was captivating enough that I powered through the mistakes. The story was better than the proofreading was bad.5. The Kindle edition did not have a map-something sorely needed. Even Google-maps seemed unable to rise to the task for some of the locations mentioned in the story. An old Atlas that I hadn't used in years, showing topography and little hamlets of Norway, greatly enhanced the story.So find a good map, ignore the grammar and writing style, and start reading. You might have to suspend disbelief at some of the details, but no doubt the major points of the story are true. If nothing else, the tale of Jan Baalsrud and the Norwegian villagers will reaffirm your faith in the human will and spirit.Finally, since the characters in the story seemed to run on brandy, pour yourself a glass and toast these men and women...preferably on a cold, windy winter evening.

I had watched the movie about Jan Baalsrud's escape, but I wanted to know more about the details. This was the first book I found, so I immediately downloaded it to my Kindle. Afterwards, I found another book, "Defiant Courage" by Scott and Haug, that had a lot more detail. "We Die Alone" seemed fuzzy on some details and inconsistent on timelines, but it is a very quick read for those who just want the highlights.

This is the twelfth book (at last count) that my husband and I have read on sexual betrayal, so we have some perspective on current works on this topic during our recovery journey. After finding much edification from Stephen Arterburn's "Every Man's Battle" we were both appalled at Jason Martinkus's shallow and sometimes hypocritical chatter. He does not even address the integrity disorders and manic behaviors that cause out-of-control adultery, nor does he acknowledge the depth of sex addiction induced trauma inflicted on spouses and family members. The author's average guy tenor attributes sex addiction some type of all-purpose shame.Sensitive readers are advised to avoid sections that salaciously detail the author's exploits with too much information. His near-bragging tone comes across as he's been a bad, bad boy with a smirk. Although Stephen Arterburn's name is on the cover as a co-author, he limited his contribution to only the introduction and a brief afterword paragraph in some, but not all, chapters. This indicates that Arterburn did not endorse some chapters that reveal Martinkus's thinly veiled denial and narcissism about his sexual escapades."Shelley's Thoughts," promoted for wives as a book feature, are curiously absent from some chapters whose content probably embarrassed her. Her brief sections are printed illegibly in a sea of gray ink, suggesting that Martinkus is paying lip service to his doormat on the sidelines. Her "gray matter" offers wives some ridiculous suggestions from her experience, such as dressing in a more sexy style will make you so uncomfortable. No celebration of wives as proud, confident sexual partners here! We suspect that Shelley has a self-image crisis from her sex addict induced trauma.As some other reviewers noted, Martinkus's first nauseating comment at the end of Chapter One was that his sexual debauchery was "the best thing that ever happened" to his chump wife, in her own words. This would only make sense if she yearned for an open marriage, and the author's outrageous infidelity now permits her to cheat on him with equanimity, and without conscience. Such justification in shattering their wedding vows is pure hypocrisy.The chapter on male compartmentalization was blatantly offensive and blasphemous. The author argues that he never stopped loving his wife, and never failed in his love for Jesus during his many infidelities, including causing a lover's abortion. His "myth" of chump wives stating "He Mustn't Love Me" is not a myth! Sadly, it's true, your husband does not love you while enjoying adultery, for whatever psychotic reasons. This book is as morbidly and unintentionally humorous as the book "When Good Men Cheat." Martinkus trivializes his beliefs as a true Christian, and has consistently refused to take his marriage vows seriously during and after his infidelity. His entitlement promotes justification about men's ability to compartmentalize their lives, while women cannot. Oh, really? His own prostitutes are masters of compartmentalization.In his litany of "big myths" that impede marital recovery, the author claims that having more sex and different sexual activities with your spouse is a great myth that causes setbacks. We have found quite the opposite to be true, improving our intimate bonding with guides like "Erotic Intelligence" by Alexandra Katehakis. Ironically, Martinkus states that doing a variety of acts now exclusively with his wife caused him "triggering" episodes. This clearly indicates that the author is not nearly in recovery, still tempted by lascivious memories while making love to his spouse.We were both so turned off after reading the first half of this book that we decided to return it. Martinkus's repeated gloating about counseling troubled men "sitting in my office" suggested macho power problems, since he was fired from several other jobs. The author and his wife apparently still need intensive therapy. Steven Arterburn should take the responsibility of removing this unqualified sex addiction counselor from his dangerous position. We would assign this trash zero stars if that were a rating option.A far better resource for infidelity recovery is "Treating Trauma from Sexual Betrayal" by Dr. Kevin Skinner. His book is written with sensitivity, therapeutic exercises, and copious references to research. The aforementioned book by Katehakis is also very insightful.Ours is an independent reader review. That’s why I feel gobsmacked! Jason Martinkus has clearly walked in the same shoes as my husband, and his wife the same as mine. Their story and his words of guidance are beacons of hope in an otherwise dark sea right now. I am able to see that my husband and I have clear paths forward for what work we both need to do...and my fervent prayer is that we have the strength to walk those paths.

I bought this for my husband after he confessed his sexual sin, and after we decided we were going to work through it and stay together. It is a wonderful book. I read it first and it was so helpful to me: how to understand what the heck happened to our marriage and what needs to be done to restore it and trust. Forgiveness for sexual betrayal is extremely difficult for a wife, but thanks be to God that Jesus Christ provides the ultimate example of forgiveness. If you are not willing to invite Christ into your life, your marriage, and your recovery, I do not recommend this book.I particularly liked the Lego metaphor of building something new one block at a time. Sexual betrayal takes a baseball bat to the “sculpture” a husband and wife built, but there is hope of building something new and better if both are willing to put in some hard work. The recovery process is not going to happen overnight, but it can happen if couples can use the tools in this book to build up trust block-by-block.

This book has some really good advice that as a wife who's had her trust destroyed for 5 years straight from my husband sleeping with countless backpage prostitutes and countless bar sluts and tinder hoes, that the information would've been very helpful. If My husband was willing to do everything suggested and truly take it seriously, I have no doubt that I wouldve regained trust and security; however, I bought this hoping he'd read it and put effort and he's refused saying he doesn't have time to due to work and classes. I filed divorce for the 2nd time recently and although he once again begged me back with endless promises, hes once again gotten comfortable in his narcissistic, sex addict, pathological liar ways and there's no hope for him. This was a last ditch effort that for me failed because my husband is a piece of trash..... however, if your husband is someone worth anything at all and has the slightest bit of respect to read and apply this book, I highly recommend and think you'll appreciate it.

Common Sense InvestingI found a lot to like about the The Little Book of Common Sense Investing: The Only Way to Guarantee Your Fair Share of Stock Market Returns by John C. Bogle. Mr. Bogle was the founder of The Vanguard Group and is famous for creating the world’s first index mutual fund in 1975, the Vanguard 500 Index Fund.The logic of his index fund was to invest in a large number of stocks, all the stocks comprising the S&P 500, to make money from the combination of their growth and dividends. This is a departure from the more common view of investing in undervalued stocks to make money from an increase in their stock value.Bogle makes a convincing argument that the best way to get the value from the stock market is to invest in all the stocks by buying mutual funds based on indexes of the market that invest in all the stocks.The author points out that the real net income from stock investments is the investments’ gain minus the cost of the investments. The costs are relatively easy to determine in the case of retail brokers charging for a stock trade when buying or selling stocks. However, the costs are much more complicated for mutual funds because, in addition to the cost of the trade, in many cases there is an annual incentive sales fee for the broker for up to five years (up to 1.5% a year according to the author). I had no idea that there were hidden sales fees in addition to the purchase fee charged by the brokers. In addition to annual fees, most mutual funds typically have additional management fees of 2 to 3%. In comparison, index funds have low management fees (often .4% or lower) with no hidden sales fees.What is more disturbing is that 99% of mutual funds significantly underperform the S&P 500 index. When the excessive costs combined with the underperformance of mutual funds are compared to S&P index funds, the long term income differences are shocking. The net return after taxes of $10,000 invested in an indexed fund from 1980 to 2005 would have been $76,200 versus $16,700 for other mutual funds (for those mutual funds that survived). This represents 456% more net income to the investor with far less risk.If you are one of the 85% of investors who let their broker "manage" their assets, Bogle’s book may keep you awake at night. To sleep better, I switched to low cost, low risk index funds.The author’s perspective is unique since he invented the very first indexed funds. It is a little like reading Thomas Edison's thoughts about the light bulb. Bogle knows the issues and history of investing in indexes versus other types of mutual funds.This "common sense investing" book was easy to read and easy to understand. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting their investments to produce more income with less risk. Five Stars and hats off to the founder of index investing.

This book was an awesome read to a new-comer in the scene of investing. I'm not sophisticated in finance. Nor am I wanting to become too knowledgeable in this topic. I just needed to understand the basic to plunge in and invest in an easy, simple portfolio. But doing so takes a whole lot more understanding than just following a simple portfolio recipe. To make my simple portfolio, I dived into Mr Bogle's book. He explained how things work in the finance world, at least enough for me to feel confident about the decisions I'm now making in the finance department. I would recommend this to any beginner investor seeking more knowledge in the field of finance.

Great Book for the basics of investing with a strong focus on Index Funds. I suggest this be read by employees of firms that gave them limited info on their 401K. All the basics are here in this book. I have been invested for 12 years in Index funds. There have been up and downs but overall I am way ahead.

Good, quick read with great information for anyone who is trying to make sense of personal finance and basic investments. Everyone should read this in their 20s before filling out the paperwork for their first workplace 401K. If you read this one book you'll know enough to invest sensibly for retirement without getting ripped off by financial product salespeople, and you'll understand more about investing than 85% of the general population.

SO helpful. I went over this book with my money manager, and no surprise, he had all this BS to say about how Bogle is wrong. Needless to say, I fired the money manager. Investing has always seemed mysterious, which is what they want you to think! With this and a few other books, I feel just competent enough to do it myself (with a little help from friends and the Bogle website).

Such a great book for a confused investing noob. Got me up to speed in understanding why passive index fund investing is the only worry free long term strategy that consistenly wins, and why active trading always returns to the mean. I finally consolidated my retirement account and opened a vanguard account to move my assets into. Thanks John Bogle!

Mr. Bogle makes a solid argument repeatedly, by approaching the same question from multiple directions and supporting it with unimpeachable numbers. It reinforced some views that I had already developed on my own, but also clued me in to the adverse effects over time of high expense ratios and transaction costs.When I finished the book I liquidated a stock that pays a decent dividend but seems to have little growth potential, and a mutual fund that has excessive costs that I had overlooked. I put the money in a low-cost S&P 500 index fund that already made up a significant part of my portfolio.I agree with other reviewers who have criticized the book as repetitive, but it's worth reading for its style, wit, and clarity.

However, the loss of the three other creepers was saddening, so I hope they get revenge on Steve by putting lava on his spawnpoint or something. It was still full of action, like when they attempted to raid Steve's castle, and the part when Worla was fighting Steve and Cth'ka can "fly" now. This is the most essential preparation book for the new, revised SAT and PSAT (beginning in March 2016 and October 2015, respectively) because it’s the only physical source of official revised SATs—the practice SATs in all other books are nothing more than subpar imitations of the real thing. However, the PDFs of all 4 tests in this book, along with answer explanations, can also be downloaded from the College Board website for free (google "SAT Practice Tests - The College Board").In addition, there are no score conversion tables provided: you will have to visit the College Board website (google "Scoring your SAT Practice Test #1") in order to convert your raw scores (total number correct on each section) into scaled scores (400-1600 scale, with additional sub-scores). So in some ways, this book is a waste of $18 plus tax, as other reviewers have already noted.On the other hand, the physical book does still have its advantages over a bunch of PDFs—perhaps most importantly, the tests are already printed out for you (for now, the SAT is still a paper and pencil test, and you are allowed to write on the test, so in the interest of practicing the way you play, you should never attempt to take it on a computer screen). Those of you who have printers at home know how frustrating and/or expensive it can be to print out a 64-page test (68 if you include the essay portion, and 70 if you include the answer sheets). Even if you print double-sided, which you should, that’s still 35 pieces of paper and a lot of printer ink. And if you want the detailed answer explanations, then you’ll have to print out twice as much. That’s more than 100 pages of printing per test! Never mind the hassle of trying to keep all those pages organized. Do you staple them? Put them in a three-ring binder? The physical book solves these problems easily, keeps everything ordered and in one place, and obviates the need for internet access, at a fraction of what it might cost to print it out yourself ($18 / 748 pages total = 2 cents per page). Even if you were to only print out the practice tests and explanations, it would still come out to less than 4 cents per page. Depending on your personal printing situation, this may or may not be a bargain for you (some of you may be able to print the PDFs for free at your high schools, for example), but you also have to factor in the convenience and organization of the pre-printed book.A little bit about me: I’m a professional, full-time SAT tutor in San Diego. Since 1998, I have amassed over 15 years and 15,000 hours of teaching and private tutoring experience, both in-person and online via Skype and Scribblar. I’m also a Harvard grad and SAT perfect scorer who continues to take the test 2-3 times a year, so I like to think that I understand the SAT better than nearly anyone. And I’ve already reviewed all 4 of these new tests with my students, since they've already been available online for several weeks.Many of the one-star, harshly negative reviews of this book have nothing to do with the quality of the book and practice tests themselves; it's simply that the reviewers had expected 4 different practice SATs from the ones released digitally as free PDFs earlier in the month, and were thus disappointed when they saw the same tests in this book. (Having worked in this industry for a long while, I was not surprised--it takes a long time to create new tests.) I don't see this as the College Board trying to rip anyone off; I see it as its providing a free, digital option to students (which, by the way, it had never done before), as well as a more convenient, pre-printed option for less than $20.This book contains 326 pages of SAT prep advice, much of which cannot be found anywhere else, and another 458 pages of the practice tests and answer explanations that can be found online. Although much of the first half of the book is superfluous, and parts of it are indeed available online through Khan Academy, it does offer some moderately helpful tips in its first 326 pages, including a test structure recap, concept overview, practice questions and explanations, as well as an essay rubric, scoring guidelines, sample essays and an introduction to the PSAT. As I’ve always said, asking the College Board for advice on the SAT is like asking the IRS for tax advice: the writers are not going to be overly forthcoming. However, I must applaud the College Board for increasing its level of transparency, and for releasing the tests in PDF form to benefit those who cannot afford to buy the book, as well as adding detailed answer explanations (though very often, the explanation provided in the book is not the simplest way to solve the question).There were some oversights, of course. As was done in the old (current) SAT Official Guide, this edition should have included single-page answer sheets for each test, with only the letter answers to the questions on each test, which would have made it much easier to grade the tests yourself. Instead of simply using a single answer page to correct your test, will you have to flip through 40 pages of answer explanations in order to correct your practice tests. Also, I agree with other reviewers that 4 tests is insufficient for a full preparation--it should be closer to 10. Hopefully the College Board will come out with another batch of tests sometime soon.Oh, and the College Board *really* wants you to use the free online tools provided by Khan Academy. Khan's web address is plastered on the margins of nearly every page of the book other than the practice tests and answer explanations. I would encourage you to make use of these online tools, practice questions and diagnostics, even though as a professional SAT tutor I am aware of their limitations.Quick tip: when taking practice sections or full tests in this book, don't bother filling in the bubbles--just circle your answers. For the essay, you're going to want to rip out the pages from the book (it's hard to write without doing so) because at the moment the College Board has yet to provide a digital option, and because you're going to want to practice using the actual essay space, to get a feel for the proper length (always write by hand, unless you are injured or have a disability, and try to avoid the temptation to type it--good typists can type 2-3 times as fast as the average person can write by hand). You can find the first essay space in this book on pages 400-404.For some reason there is currently no way to download the Essay Space PDF online (ahem, College Board, please get on this), but if you want to practice filling in the bubbles, then you can google "Answer Sheet - New SAT Practice Test." I recommend that you scan the blank essay space on pages 400-404 after you rip them out, so you can re-use them later if you end up writing more than 4 practice essays.When it comes time to re-try the questions, I recommend that you either buy a 2nd copy of the book to keep blank, or that you print out a fresh copies using the free PDFs provided by the College Board. It's what I call a "blind review": going over all the questions you got wrong without first checking the correct answer/explanation, or seeing any of your previous work. In my opinion, blind review is one of the key facets of effective test prep. Thus, you should only mark your answers as correct or incorrect (this is easier when working with a partner). Most importantly, don't indicate the correct answers on the test before you get a chance to review them.In contrast, if you go over questions by checking the correct answers right away, then you can fool yourself into thinking that you understand them fully, when in fact you are still prone to those types of mistakes. The best way to know for sure is to try the questions again, from scratch, *without* the aid of the answer key or the answer explanations. Only then should you confirm the correct answer and read the explanation provided.Now, let’s talk about the structure of the new test.-Entire Test: Four answer choices instead of five, no guessing penalty, essay optional (but required by the majority of colleges). Lots of sub-scores, including not only the usual Reading, Writing and Language, and Math scores (1-40), but also Cross-Test scores in “Analysis in History/Social Studies” and “Analysis in Science” (1-40), and sub-scores in “Command of Evidence,” “Words in Context,” “Expression of Ideas,” “Standard English Conventions,” “Heart of Algebra,” “Problem Solving and Data Analysis," and "Passport to Advanced Math" (1-15). I’m not so sure that any of these sub-scores will matter much to colleges: most colleges are simply going to want your Reading, Writing and Math scores, as well as your overall score (now on a 400-1600 point scale). However, these sub-scores should help you figure out your specific areas of weakness.-Reading Section: 65 minutes, 52 questions. No more sentence completions or esoteric vocabulary. Lots of question pairs where the second question in the pair asks for “the choice that provides the best evidence for the answer to the previous question.” For this reason, always glance at the next question for clues as to where the answer might be found. The new reading section also includes a significant number of vocab-in-context questions, as well as some graphs and charts at the end of the passages, with corresponding questions that are usually relatively easy.-Writing and Language Section: 35 minutes, 44 questions. For those of you who have taken the ACT, the SAT Writing and Language section is nearly identical to the ACT English section. No more isolated sentences like the current SAT writing--instead you are given a series of passages with underlined portions to edit.-Math No Calculator Section: 25 minutes, 20 questions. New concepts such as imaginary numbers (multiplying by the conjugate of the denominator) and synthetic division are tested. In some cases you must complete the square or use the quadratic equation, and in other instances, you are given physics-type questions that involve conceptual understanding, such as the fact that velocity equals zero when a projectile reaches its highest point. Estimation is often necessary. For questions 16-20, you must provide your own response (no multiple choice).-Math With Calculator Section: 55 minutes, 38 questions. Pretty much the same stuff, except with a calculator. For questions 31-38, you must provide your own response (no multiple choice).-Essay: 50 minutes, analyzing an argument. Essays are given three scores from 2-8 in Reading, Analysis and Writing (two different essay readers grade each essay from 1-4 and their scores are added together). The essay portion is now optional (but most colleges will require it). The essay space provided is three pages long, not including the page provided for outlining and brainstorming. The goal of the essay is to analyze how and why the author shapes his/her argument, and its effect on the reader. If you need help with this, then I would strongly suggest that you read the sample essays on pages 214-220.These days, many students prefer the ACT The Real ACT Prep Guide (Book + Bonus Online Content), (Reprint) (Official Act Prep Guide) to the SAT. But the College Board has been fighting back by inflating SAT percentiles and making other efforts to make the SAT more palatable for students. For example, one major reason to consider taking the New SAT instead of (or in addition to) the ACT is that the SAT allows you more time per question than does the ACT. Thus, if time management is a major issue, then the SAT might be a better test for you:SAT Reading = 1.25 minutes per question (75 seconds)ACT Reading = .875 minutes per question (52.5 seconds)SAT Grammar (Writing and Language) = .8 minutes per question (48 seconds)ACT Grammar (English) = .6 minutes per question (36 seconds)SAT Math = 1.4 minutes per question (83 seconds)ACT Math = 1 minute per question (60 seconds)Please keep in mind that this book is not necessarily the best source of SAT strategy. For that you should consider the help of free online sources such as the aforementioned Khan Academy, as well as Magoosh, Sparknotes, YouTube, and the like. Or, if you can afford it, then buy some additional SAT strategy books, find a classroom course, or hire a qualified private tutor like me. Even in this information age, there is still great value in being taught in person (or online via Skype) by a qualified, experienced and full-time professional.The most obvious drawback of using third-party SAT strategy books is that the questions within are less realistic than those on the real SAT. However, one benefit of using them is that they also include additional (non-official) SAT practice tests: most of my private students find the 4 tests included in the book to be insufficient for a full preparation. Flawed as these synthetic tests may be at times, it's nice to have 10 extra diagnostic exams to prepare with while the College Board cooks up a new batch of actual SAT practice tests. The Ivy Global Ivy Global's New SAT Guide, 2nd Edition and Barron's Barron's 6 Practice Tests for the NEW SAT, 2nd Edition books serve well for this purpose. The Ivy Global book includes 3 tests (including an extra PDF test that is free to download online), and the Barron's book contains 6 tests. Overall, the quality of the Ivy Global tests is better, but there are fewer tests than the Barron's book, and the Ivy Global guide costs 2.5 times as much. If you need more help with SAT strategy and want to focus on particular types of questions, then the Ivy Global book could be a good choice--it has nearly 500 pages of mostly helpful SAT prep advice and practice questions drills in addition to the 3 SAT practice tests. If you just need more practice tests at a cheaper price, then the Barron's book should suffice.Real SAT questions are of course always better to practice with, but for the new SAT, they are currently in short supply. So you should also try to get your hands on a copy of the 2015 practice PSAT (copies were sent to students who took the test), as well as the actual October 2015 PSAT, which you can download from the College Board website. Professional SAT tutors like me will obsessively collect every real SAT or PSAT we can find, and at the moment, there are very few of them, so of course they are especially precious.When the College Board first announced the new changes to the SAT, I took its proclamations about test changes and specifications with a grain of salt. The Board likes to wax poetic about how much better the new test is, and all the various areas of knowledge it’s going to test, but as I learned from the last time the SAT was updated 10 years ago, the proof is in the pudding: the actual College Board tests. And finally, we have 4 of them (5 if you include the new PSAT). This time around, I have to admit that the new SAT actually is quite different.In the introduction to the book, Cynthia B. Schmeiser (Chief of Assessment at the College Board) writes that “the new SAT is clearer than ever.” Having completed all of these tests with my students already, I don’t know if I would agree with that observation—the math sections can be quite tricky at times, and starting the test off with a seemingly interminable 65-minute Reading section (the longest reading section on the current SAT--3 reading sections total--is only 25 minutes long, and the lone reading section on the ACT is only 35 minutes long) isn't going to attract many new students either. I understand the thinking behind this decision--the idea was to get the reading section (traditionally the most disliked section of the test) out of the way first--but it doesn't work in practice. And then there's the essay. The length of the essay is now doubled from 25 minutes to 50 minutes, and this time it's at the end of the test instead of the beginning. There are very few students out there who want to write a nearly hour-long essay after they have already taken a three-hour test. Ironically, the College Board made these changes in part because it was losing students and market share to the ACT, but I now expect even more students to flock to the ACT as a result, at least until the kinks in the new test are ironed out.Over time I plan to write free explanations for every question in this book. The Official Study Guide for all SAT Subject Tests isn't a study guide at all, as is the case with most if not all of College Board's study guide publications. This book includes only one previously administered test per subject area, which isn't adequate enough to determine the knowledge you have mastered in the subject. The exams themselves must be at least several years old, and the conversion charts reflect the performance of past years; test writers change over time as well as student competitiveness. The part that probably ticks people off the most is that NO answer explanation is included. Because this is the only SAT Subject Test book published by the actual test writing company, many have no choice but to buy this. Just because there are no other publications of previously administered exams doesn't make it right for College Board to sloppily take a past exam booklet and add answer keys. Another problem with this book is that half of it is foreign language exams. Almost no student takes more than one language test, if any at all. The foreign language exams are dead weight. The CD included only contains listening parts. College Board needs to do better, especially for the prices it charges students for the standardized tests it administers. Unless College Board updates the exams, adds an answer key explanation, or includes more exams, this book doesn't help much, but for $13 (Amazon) or $19 (College Board), it's better than nothing. If you think about buying it, buy it early, since you're most likely not going to take more than four SAT Subject Tests, and using it for just one practice test is a waste.

To be honest, I bought this with almost no intention to actually do the practice tests, but only to read the tips and tricks to the SAT. I took the SAT not long ago during my senior year in high school, as a last ditch effort to acquire as high as possible grade on it as I could.I had never previously taken a standardized test with any preparation, and just showed up to take the test. While I always performed well, it wasn't necessarily at the standards of some elite colleges I had planned on applying to.I can't stress enough how useful practice tests are, especially for standardized exams. The thorough reasoning provided for each answer on all the practice tests really teaches you exactly what you are doing wrong and how to correct it, along with the process to find the answer for future reference. I can safely say that doing the practice tests in this book, as well as reviewing the lessons provided in the book, definitely helped me when I took the SAT a final time, and there were many questions that were structured nearly exactly the same as in the practice examinations. These questions, although few, could be the deciding factors in whether I get a few extra points on my test or not, and I believe they did.Doing the practice exams is really the best way to study for practice exams. You will feel so comfortable answering questions on the SAT after having done them before and understanding how to answer them and what to look for.I felt more confident coming out of that SAT than I ever have coming out of any test.DO THE PRACTICE TESTS IF YOU WISH TO IMPROVE YOUR GRADE. IT WILL HELP. TRUST ME.

The book provides s unique view of Kuwaiti. The discussion goes beyond superficial description that existed in many books. it provides deep and rich investigation of the reasons behind the current status. Another quality of the book is its inclusion of almost all relevant literature and scholars and contextualize their contributions in sophisticated manner.I really enjoyed the book and consider it one of the best that I read in such subject. I highly recommend to anyone interested in analytical view of GCC countries and specially Kuwait.

This is an outstanding discussion of the damages caused to democratic rule in the rentier state.
