Wow. This is an amazing, excellent book- though the style is somewhat literary, so if you hate that in your sf/f, you may not go for this one.Still, this time I say "literary" in its best senses: carefully crafted use of words, subtle and well-designed plot, and gripping characters.I really loved how 3 divergent threqads throughout the book reconciled at the end, and in a way I had not anticipated.Along for the ride- but not overwhelming at all- is racism, oppression of classes of people by the majority- and how that will likely backfire at some point.The world is strange and wonderfully drawn, too!This is one of the best books I've read all year, and possibly Jemisin's best thus far.

The Fifth Season is the first book in The Broken Earth trilogy. It won the Hugo Award for 2016 and the sequel, The Obelisk Gate, just took the 2017 Hugo Award. The third book in the series, The Stone Sky is due out in a few days (August 15, 2017) and seems to have a lot of buzz around the anticipated release.Being such a critically acclaimed darling and widely read already, there's not much my review can add, but I'll throw my few cents in anyhow.For me this was a 4.5 star book. This is the second N.K. Jemisin book I've read (the other was The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms). I liked this book appreciably more, but there are definitely a few commonalities that I'll just chalk up to the authors style. She seems to favor chopping her narrative up chronologically, and not really explaining to the reader what's earlier or later in the timeline, you just get to piece it together as you go. She also seems to favor some tougher to read perspectives (one of the POV storylines in The Fifth Season uses 2nd person, which is not so common, but I thought it worked well in this context). Lastly, she's not an author that spells out all the twists and turns of the plot, again, the reader is left to infer and piece things together. I thought this was much more effective in The Fifth Season than in The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms.This book did have fair amount of made up words. You will pretty much catch on to all of it by context, but it's a little disorienting at the start of the book when they come in fast and furious. For those reading the ebook edition (like I did), it may be helpful to know there's an index at the back of the book. As usual, I only found it when I was done. One day I'll learn to check.Quick plot overview without getting into spoilers - this is a dystopian novel, set on a far future Earth. The continents have been smashed together again and the world is menaced by extremely active tectonic shifts and the resulting hot spots/volcanoes. The titular "Fifth Seasons" happen when a massive natural disaster occurs (volcano/earthquake) that impacts life over most or all of the continent for a long period of time (anywhere from six months to hundreds of years) - impacts can be acidic rain, famine, fungal blooms, crop extinction, etc. There's an index of the various Fifth Seasons at the back of the book as well.The narrative revolves around people in this world with an extra ability to control the earth (specifically seismically, in quelling or causing earthquakes/tsunamis/volcanic erruptions). These people are called orogenes (politely) or roggas (informally/derogatorily). In the current timeline, an empire called Sanze controls most of the continent. At the capital of Sanze, there's a school/training facility called the Fulcrum. The Fulcrum is designed to train/control orogenes.In philosophical themes, the book gives you a lot to chew over and think about in regard to the true meaning and results of slavery and freedom and the intention of actions and the results. The book also touches on race (a lot of comments will note the description of most of the population reads as African or Asian) and sexuality (there is a gender fluid character as well as some bisexuality and a three-way, sort of, relationship).The book is most certainly dark, but worthy of reading. There are several instances of abuse centered on children which always seems harder to read and a few grisly deaths as well as some mass death events. The world of The Fifth Season is a harsh one. There was not a lot of humor to lighten this book up but it was nonetheless an engaging read that left you with something to ponder.Edit: I finished this book several months ago but I'm still thinking about it. Added an extra star for the narrative's lasting power.

This book was a dance with liking and disliking the writing.This is the first Jemisin book I've read and her writing style is apparently not to my tastes. After finishing much of the painful writing makes sense why it was approached but this led to me actively disliking the book. See others 1 and 2 star reviews to get a summary of issues.The main character of the book wavers between myself not caring and actively disliking reading about her and being engaged then going to marginally engaged. I'd put more discussion about this here but due to spoilers I'll refrain.The world is full. However it felt like pulling teeth pulling bits and pieces out. I think it is fairly coherent and being a science fiction book through obfuscating it like a fantasy distracted from the book.The focus on characters appearance became tedious quickly. Going on for several sentences about how to determine which part of the world a passing stranger is from with whom there is no interaction became a common place event and felt like word padding.I have no ruled out reading the second in this series but I am hesitant to commit to it.As for this book being Hugo / Nebula nominee I can see how people could think it might deserve such. However I did not find the writing or plot or story to be a driving it into my list of great books. I also can not say it didn't deserve it. I think this should sum up my final feel, it is complicated and mixed. But my final reaction is more relief I finished it after nearly marking is DNF at 10% and not enjoyment. That is truly one of the most condemning summaries I can give a book. It wasn't bad enough to not finish but I'm glad it is over.

I picked up the Kindle and audio versions if this trilogy to take a break from my recent "hard SF" binge. My expectations were not high -- I've been disappointed by many fantasy authors trying to "break the mold" and differentiate themselves from the Tolkiens, Martins, and Rothfuss of today's big-book-fantasy. I was happily surprised by these books. This is neither a _Harry Potter_ YA nor a grimdark story; it's not an urban fantasy or a classic quest tale. It is a well-written fantasy with a largely unique magic system and mythos coupled with a satisfying personal story of loss, revenge, and what it means to be an "other" in stratified, xenophobic, society. The only books I can conpare it to are Daniel Abraham's Long Price Quartet (and that's good company for any story). Highly recommended for any reader of modern fantasy looking for a unique world and system of magic.

There was no shot clock to liven things up and “players used two hands and kept both feet on the ground while shooting.” A lively game it was not, but when one player, Hank Luisetti, came into the picture, things began to change.Hank changed everything with his style, a style that utilized the “one-handed jump shot.” It was a style that was quickly imitated by other players. It was then the game of basketball began to evolve, but it didn’t stop with a single player. The Metropolitan Basketball Writers of New York City realized that the game could benefit from a competition in the form of a tournament. The game had come a long way since 1895 and by 1938 the writers offered up “an invitation-only tournament featuring the best teams in the country” to determine just who had the best team. Their organization was dubbed the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), but it wasn’t long before they were edged out by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).The “NCAA had taken over as a governing body for all major college athletics” and although teams played championship games for both the NIT and the NCAA, there really wasn’t room for both. Unfortunately, there were many good teams, but initially only eight teams were able to participate in a tournament. Expansion was definitely in order and in 1951, that eight became sixteen, and in 1952 twenty-two to twenty-five could participate. Today, with the ever-evolving NCAA rules, we have a “modern total of 68 teams.” There was that UCLA streak, some classic games, and games that weren’t exactly classic, but certainly memorable. This is the beautiful art that we expect from Ms. Phelan but the print quality of this calendar is not that great. Hope next year's will be better. I'll probably try and get a look at it in a brick and mortar before purchasing. Paper quality is good but the printing is not so good. I'm giving it a 3 based largely on the art and paper. If I was just rating the printing, I'd go with 1 star.

The large quilt show in Sisters, Oregon the second weekend in July features many quilts like the ones shown in the calendar so I purchased for a friend to reminder her of our lovely country.

I love Diane Phalen's scenary with quilts artwork. I have her calendar hanging up by my desk at work. I love looking at the calendar scenes at random moments during my busy day and take a couple moments to escape.

I had great hopes for a book with dragons, transformations, and conflict between two races and, for the most part, those hopes were fulfilled. Rayna and Andres are two orphans, struggling to survive, who live in a turbulent society that is protected by humans who can morph into ice spear throwing wolves who battle fire-breathing human-to-dragon beings that kidnap children and create engineering marvels. Thrown into that mix is the fact that the twins inadvertently discover that they are a part of that elite shape-shifting group. Except that Rayna takes dragon form and Andres goes wolf, and according to everyone, siblings should not be able to take different forms. The country of Vallen that Kaufman creates has a rich history of war, inventions, and training for its shape-shifters. As several other reviewers mention, there are some holes and implausibilities in that history, but those can be overlooked as the pace and events of the book are exciting. I am anxious to see what develops with the volatile relationship between the two species, if the failing dragon/wolf created technology from Vallen’s past is restored, and what surprises will be revealed in the second installment of the Elementals series. I recommend this book to readers of fantasy books by Mull (Fablehaven and more) D’Lacey (Icefire), O’Hearn (Pegasus and Valkyrie), etc. Librarians of students in grades 5-9 will find this one exciting enough to interest the older in that range but with the absence of profanity, gory violence and sexual content it is appropriate for the younger end as well.

Book arrived in perfect condition. Would not have even known it was used. And much more reasonable priced than brand new. This was a required reading choice for my son and he really enjoyed the book. He's glad to know that there will be more books to follow in this series.

Ice Wolves tells the story of twelve year old Anders, and his twin sister, Rayna. The book is from Anders point of view, which I adored. He was such an amazing boy to read about. He started out as really shy and not all that brave, but he ended up changing a lot, and he grew to be really brave by the end of the book. I can't wait to see how he changes even more in the next ones. And also so curious to know if the next books will be from his point of view too, or from Rayna next. I'm hoping book two will be named Scorch Dragons. Fingers crossed. I would love to still read from Anders.As I said, this book tells the story of Anders and his twin sister Rayna. They are orphans, and have been living on the streets since they were six years old. They steal to eat every day, and hide away to sleep at night. My heart kept breaking for these adorable children. I only wanted the best for them. Sniffs. They were such amazing characters, though. Still strong, despite not having the best life. Still trying their best to survive. And loving each other, protecting each other. I loved their special bond a whole lot. So cute.I'm not going to describe everything that happens in this book, but must talk a little bit about the history of it. In this world, some people have the power to change into wolves, aka ice wolves. The wolves protect the city against some fierce scorch dragons, whom they had a war against years back. The dragons are evil, or so the wolves claim. And the wolves have been protecting everyone for years now. When children become twelve, they are all to be tested to see if they have enough wolf blood to become an ice wolf too.And this is how this book begins, with Anders and Rayna ending up being tested by accident. And it does not go well. Rayna ends up turning into a scorch dragon, the enemy of this whole town. The wolves ends up attacking her, trying to capture her, but she gets away. At the same time, Anders ends up turning into a ice wolf. Which should not be possible, since they are twins, and should have just one type of elemental blood. But it still happened. They turned into different creatures. They are now supposed to be enemies.This whole plot is all kinds of exciting. Anders is learning how to be a human and a wolf. He now has to study at a school, ending up as a soldier when he's grown up. But even while he is at this school for a few weeks, all he can think about is going to the dragons to save his sister, as he is sure she is going to end up killed. I loved reading about Anders a lot, about how he found new friends, yet always thought about his twin too. Their bond was gorgeous, and I am really excited about reading more about them together.While I pretty much loved this book, I am giving it four stars. I don't really have a big reason for this, just that I felt like some things could have been a little more. A little more magic, a little more exciting things happening. It felt a bit slow in the entire middle of the book. But I still adored it a lot, and I'm so glad I read this book. You are all going to love it too. It's an fantastic stories about awesome creatures and kind of a magic school. There is a lot happening, and I haven't mentioned all of it. I enjoyed this story a whole lot.Ice Wolves was such a stunning middle grade book. Full of adventure and fun. Stunning friendships and gorgeous magic too. I adored these characters, and I cannot wait to read more about them in the next books. Eee. Fingers crossed book two will be from Anders too, but I will love it either way. And just so excited.
