Every single one of us is entitled to feel fulfilled by the work we do, to wake up feeling inspired to go to work, to feel safe when we’re there and to return home with a sense that we contributed to something larger than ourselves. Fulfillment is not a lottery. It is not a feeling reserved for a lucky few who get to say, “I love what I do.”For those who hold a leadership position, creating an en-vironment in which the people in your charge feel like they are a part of something bigger than themselves is your responsibility as a leader. For those who work for an organization that does not leave you feeling inspired at the beginning and end of every day, you must become the leader you wish you had. Regardless of our rank in the organiza-tion, every single one of us has at least one colleague, client or vendor for whom we can take some responsibility for how they feel when they work with us. The goal is not to focus on what’s standing in your way; it is to take steps that will have a positive and lasting effect on everyone around us.The concept of WHY is a deeply personal journey born out of pain. I discovered the idea at a time when I had lost any passion for my work. The advice people gave me wasn’t helpful either: “Do what you love,” “Find your bliss,” “Be passionate.” All accurate—but totally un-actionable. I agreed with all the advice in theory, but I didn’t know what to change. I didn’t know what to do differently on Monday. And that’s the reason the WHY has been and continues to be such a profound force in my life. Not only did discovering my WHY renew my passion, it gave me a filter to make better decisions. It offered me a new lens through which I would see the world differently. And it was through this lens—to inspire people to do what in-spires them so that together each of us can change our world—that I started preaching the concept of WHY and the Golden Circle. And people listened. In fact, people did more than listen, they joined me in preaching this mes-sage, sharing the vision. And our movement was born.The TED Talk I gave in 2009 helped spread the idea to more people, and my first book, Start with Why, made the case for WHY in much greater depth. People and organizations who know their WHY enjoy greater, long-term success, command greater trust and loyalty among employees and customers and are more forward-thinking and innovative than their competition. The concept of WHY and the Golden Circle became a huge piece of the puzzle to advance this world I imagined. But there was a problem.Though I was able to make the case for the existence and the power of WHY, and though I could help some people and organizations discover their WHY, I wasn’t able to get to or help as many people as we needed to if we are to have an impact in lots of people’s lives. My team built upon what I started. They made my process even better. They started helping people. They even developed an online course to help people discover their WHY. But even that wasn’t enough.That’s the reason this book exists. If Start with Why makes the case for the WHY, Find Your Why provides the steps to show people how to actually do it. And just as Start with Why illustrates, though I may be the guy with the idea, I don’t know how to bring it to life at scale. I read Start with Why and Find Your Why back to back over just a few days. Sinek’s famous Ted Talk (Presented in 2009, it has over 33 million views.) was so powerful to me that I had to see where he was with it now.The man has a theme. He calls it the Golden Circle: Why—How—What. Why is the reason. How is the means. What is the result. They all have to be in balance, driven by the why, and when they are, you will achieve authenticity and success.The theme hasn’t changed. In terms of the Start with Why concept itself, you’ll find little new here. Find Your Why is a how-to. Sinek and his team, Peter Docker and David Mead, and Docker and Mead in particular, provide a detailed guide to defining and sharing the why, how, and what within an actual organization, using the process they have refined through extensive use to help companies apply the original Sinek concept. (There is a refresher for those who haven’t read Start with Why or viewed the Ted talk.)As the authors state, “That’s the reason this book exists. If Start with Why makes the case for the WHY, Find Your Why provides the steps to show people how to actually do it.” And it does a good job at achieving that goal.To those who have been in the organizational world for a while, a lot of this will sound a lot like past initiatives to define mission, values, strategy, and tactics, or some combination of those concepts, however you define them. The Start With Why Team, as they refer to themselves, openly discusses that later in the book.The language is different. And so are the priorities and the focus. Values, as most organizations define them, and as the Why Team points out, are really just ideals. They aren’t actionable. And they’re right.It would be a disservice, therefore, to characterize the Why program as more of the same, either more of the 2009 TED talk or more of the overlapping programs many other consultants have promoted over the years. This is more than just another of the 32 flavors of Colgate toothpaste that Sinek refers to in Start with Why. And that’s because he always goes back to why. And that’s the magic.So, if you are responsible for developing engagement, strategy, or similar programs for your company, I would consider this a must read. If that’s not what you need, there is still plenty of value to the book. Sinek and his team are clearly impassioned. The writing is very fluid. And when it comes to WHY, you can’t get too much of a good thing.

The biggest gap in the Start With Why book is that that book didn't really address how to find your why.This book is directed at addressing that gap.The book is rather short, and an easy read. In essence, its message is:1. There are two kinds of why discovery processes - one for individuals and one for groups2. Both of them work the same way: look to your formative experiences and figure out the themes, and what was significant. Then distill that into your 'why'.The authors provided a fairly high level process for doing that.INDIVIDUALS: FINDING YOUR WHYI think overall the book follows a good approach for helping you find your purpose or 'why.' I did feel though that the nuts and bolts of the process could have been further elaborated in parts of the individual 'why' discovery process, with additional questions and exercises to help guide people through the process.ORGANISATIONS: FINDING YOUR WHYThe book provided a good run-through of the steps of facilitating a purpose-discovery workshop.THE UPSHOT:I think that there are other books that go into greater depth around the processes of finding your individual why and the process of finding an organisation or group's why. But this book is a good starting point.If you are completely new to 'finding your why' this book provides a short, accessible guide to how to do that and the process is solid.If you are looking for more depth around your why, you may find exploring other treatments of this topic provide greater depth and additional perspective.

I think this book permanently damaged my respect for Simon Sinek.I've seen most if not all of his TED talks, and liked the book "Together is Better". I believe Mr. Sinek actually gets the core of leadership, but I don't understand how this "book" fits into that. Since there's two other authors on the cover, I'm inclined to believe Simon Sinek only wrote the foreword. The tone and content is such a departure from the leadership principles he's discussed that I actually felt swindled when I started reading. Even if Mr. Sinek only wrote the foreword, his name is the one used to sell the rest of it.Did you know that Emily also used this book to land her dream job with only one interview? Or that Susan and Jim are using it to find the employee with the perfect fit? ...Seriously? Fake testimonials? Then it tells you it's a workbook for you to find your why. Except all 7 chapters are the same, just tweaked to account for group size. By the way, you also need a partner and six hours to find your why.I have a feeling this is the book they GIVE you at the end of the "leadership seminar", so that the three people your company sent have a reference when they go back and train the other hundred or so. If I could refund this with a clear conscience, I would.

After reading this book everything makes more sense. My husband and I both read the book and now that we understand how we are different and why we say and do and react the ways we do everything comes easier, especially communication. The book is informative with real life examples and information that helps every relationship even if only one person reads it, the effect on the relationship is still substantial. It doesnt matter if you are just dating, newlyweds, or have been married for years, the information is equally beneficial to everyone. I was surprised at the level of insight in this book. John Gray does a wonderful job at providing results from his 30 years of working with people as well as scientific information regarding hormones and brain function that once known can have a profound impact on your life from how you relate to people of the opposite sex to understanding your own body and moods. I wish I could have read this book as a teenager, it helped me to understand my body (hormones), why I do what I do, and how to be my true authentic self while balancing my male and female sides. This book should be a required read for every single person, if taught in schools our kids would be prepared for real world interactions and the knowledge they need to lead happy healthy lives as well as have happy healthy relationships, in their personal lives and at work.

I highly recommend this very helpful book by a brilliant author who “walks his talk.” John Gray helps us smoothly navigate the changing masculine and feminine roles today. I’ve been happily married to my soul mate for over 35 years, and both my husband and I found his advice reflected our own experience in many ways. I especially appreciated his understanding of how men and women have both male and female sides, and also his scientific information about male and female hormones and their impact on our stress levels and happiness. It was intriguing to learn, for example, that men become more aggressive, not when they have too much testosterone, but when they have too much estrogen. I also appreciated reading that the number one problem in relationships is a man’s tendency to express his anger through arguing with his partner. Peace needs to begin at home.

I really enjoyed reading Beyond Mars and Venus. The most important thing that I learned in this book is I should not talk about my feelings right away when I am angry or stressed out at someone. I should strive to detach and do an activity that rebuilds my testosterone to calm down. This is a hormone that I can build up by exercising. I started performing in theater six years ago. Memorizing my lines and learning how to move on stage are very difficult things to do, but I learned that learning to do hard things can also boost my testosterone level. I have learned to cooperate and work with many other people in theater. I have learned to depend and cooperate with many others to make our play successful. Cooperation and interdependence are two aspects that can promote my estrogen level. I never thought of the feminine qualities that I have developed doing theater. Being able to express both my masculine and feminine qualities equally is the key to having a loving and successful relationship with a woman. I also learned that silently listening to a woman is an a skill that can build up my testosterone. Silently listening to a woman can help me respond to her more intelligently. I won't say something dumb when I listen silently. I I also learned that actions and not words are more important when a woman is stressed out. I should just give a woman a hug when she is angry or stressed with me. Giving a woman a hug will increase the female hormone oxytocin. This will calm her down. I love the information in this book. Learning about how the male and female hormones work will help my romantic relationship to develop and blossom. It will also help me to become a more effective theater performer.

Not as engaging as the first book. I felt it wasn’t as well researched because the content didn’t seem convincing.

I thought many of the examples in the book are blown out of proportion. As such they enflamed rather than informed the prospective traveler to Saudi Arabia. The cartoons seem to promote stereotypes of Arabs that are derogatory. I threw the book out before I entered Saudi Arabia. I did not want anyone to think I'd taken such a book seriously.

I wish this book was around when I took on the responsibility of being the sole parent of two wonderful children. I was not a perfect father but I did do a number of things right. I quit work to be available to both as we adjusted to a life without a mom. I spent time with both and also individually as we shared special events like a football game, a concert, the symphony, and special summer trips to Big Fork, Montana. My children are now doing the same for their children (my son has two and my daughter has five). Dr. Meeker is a self-described feminist whose career-long exposure to troubled girls has given her a deep and scientifically-buttressed belief in the irreplaceability of healthy, engaged, moral and patient fathers to the emotional development of their daughters. But before we have time to gloat at the fish-and-bicycles crowd, she hits us with marching orders that are no walk in the park (despite including walks in the park). An excellent, factual, refreshingly politically incorrect and highly actionable manual for any father who loves his daughter enough to want to set her up for a life of joy and success. The rest should read it, too.

I thought this book was decent, definitely not great. Dr. Meeker makes some overall helpful points but also said things that I felt were unreasonable for example praising her father for not allowing her to date someone he just "had a bad feeling about" who later turned out to be a cheater. She also stated that a father's love would protect your daughter from bullying. It won't. However, for the average Dad just wanting a quick read and some pointers I think this book is fine. It basically affirms you need to spend quality time with your daughters, talk to them, set boundaries for them, and make sure they know you think they're important.

Good book. Although much of it seems like common sense. I have nearly finished the book and the gist of it seems to be, be a good dad as well as a good honest person and stay involved in your daughters life and they will turn out to be good, well rounded adult women. It does help you want to be a better dad in the sense that it helps you to realize that the decisions you make in your life can and will have repercussions in the life of your daughter.

Buy this book for every first time father you know. Doesn't matter if the new Dad has a daughter or son. This book is amazing and will help you be a better man, Dad and also understand better the role of a Dad. It WILL scare you as it will explain just how important you are and what a giant impact a Dad has in the future of his children.This book is a must. It is a wonderful gift for any new Dad. I don't know how many I have given out now and I always am thanked well after it is read.

Every father, especially those with daughters obviously, would be better off having read this work by physician Meg Meeker. She encourages Dads stepping up and being Dads, she doesn't try to feminize men but rather encourages Dads to reach into their masculinity for the strength needed to be there for their family even when that angry teen or adult child is lashing out or running away. Meeker speaks from experience both personal and from her career, she gives stats, she gives hope, she give advice, she inspires and seeks to motivate every Dad to be a Dad.Buy it, borrow it, get it at the library, buy it used, and get a copy for a Dad you know. It is worthwhile even if you don't have a daughter though the focus is the Daughter & Dad relationship. Mom's can read it to help understand what that Dad/Daughter relationship can look like and importance. And of course if the dad is out of the picture for good, or needs to be, or whatever, the book can help you know what deficits will be there and maybe lend thought to how to mitigate. I've read it, and bought it for others. It'll kick your butt, might move you to tears at times, and inspire your parenting.
