I was expecting some new insight from this book, but didn't get any. The drawings make for a catchy title, but I don't think they add much beyond what the text offers.For a math book, I am not looking for Proof by Simile. Saying that a function smooths out like the German Autobahn strikes me as distinctly nonmathmatical.I am not sure who the target audience is, but it seems too dense for younger children, and not rigorous enough for people interested in math and science. Perhaps best for people who never took college level math classes but are looking for something sciencey...

I am familiar with the author's blog and ordered this book thinking a math teacher friend would enjoy the humorous illustrations. I was surprised to see a lot more in the way of math explanation than I had expected. My kids were intrigued by an "Oral History of the Death Star" and why ants have no fear of falling. So we ended up buying one a copy for our family too.The second half of the book is heavy on probability/statistics/reasoning and makes the ideas very accessible.

This is a great book! You will love this book! It's the best book I've read all year, and I don't say this just because the author is my son. You should buy it for yourself and give this book as a gift to anyone you know who loves math, or likes math, or at least isn't phobic about math. You should definitely give this book as a gift to each your children, assuming that your child is at least 12 years old and isn't the author. By the way, the author refers to "bad drawings." I find the drawings cute and endearing. And they are WAY better than anything I can draw.

I love this book. Orlin leads a playful romp through a universe of mathematical ideas, with interesting stories, anecdotes, and examples. The book is at once profound but also highly accessible. Math-lovers will find a lot of to appreciate about this book, but so will young people, teachers, engineers and scientists, and the math-curious layperson. It's laugh-out-loud funny in nearly every chapter, but your giggles and chortles will be interspersed with fascinated "hmmm..." and surprised "Ahhh!"s. The "bad drawings" are a highlight, but the clever writing is the real star. I can't wait for volume 2! There will be a volume 2, right Mr. Orlin??

I pre-ordered the book and was so excited when it arrived! I'm on Chapter 4 and can't put it down. Ben's writing style and explanations are engaging, truthful, insightful, and easy to understand. As a math teacher (and a lifelong math student), I especially identified with the chapter on how students see math. I plan to share many of the topics in the book with my high school math students. My wheels are spinning to create activities or discussion topics to weave into my classes from things that I've read so far in this book. Can't wait to see what the rest of the book brings!

I was inspired to buy this book by a blog that I read, and I'm glad that I did. The drawings, which are indeed bad, serve to humanize the subject. A wide range of topics is covered, from baseball and football statistics to state lotteries. A very enjoyable read, at least for this math-literate person.

Orlin has a knack for rendering abstruse mathematics into readable simple language, with wit and humor. The bad drawings are actually clever and illuminative. For anyone interested in what math is like fo4 mathematicians, this book is awesome.

The is the most fun you could ever have reading a math book. Ben Orlin's writing makes all the topics come alive. He's got a great sense of humor. I have laughed out loud multiple times while reading this book. Highly recommend to any people who are interested in enjoying some leisure math without lots of heavy lifting.

A good map of a difficult region to map out, with enlarged map portions for various island groups. However, it isn't super-specificfor very small islands, and there were several tiny islands we went to, in Papua New Guinea's Louisiade Archipelago, which were barely indicated on the map (by a tiny dot) or not at all. I think I'd almost need a detailed atlas for getting those on a map.I am not sure that such an atlas even exists.I was on a National Geographic expedition to the region (its first to these specific islands) and even the maps in the ship library had very little detail, although the islands were shown.I think that for most purposes, this map would be just fine. I like the way it groups islands together according to which nation they belong to, by using a line border around nation-groups. This map makes the region more easy to understand politically.

This map will only be useful to you if you don't have any other basic resources, like a general world atlas or travel guides, at home.The main map itself shows the entire South Pacific region, with country boundaries clearly marked, but individual islands reduced to the size of dots.Major islands are shown on inset maps, however even these are still tiny - you will find bigger, more detailed, and more accurate maps of the same islands (and many more) in travel guidebooks to this region by Lonely Planet or Moon.In short, unless you just want a general map to hang on your wall, don't waste your money on this one!

This is a great map. We studied this area in homeschool this year. This map worked perfectly.

This is a pretty detailed map. I bought it to plan a vacation around the Fiji islands and it provided me a good overview of how the islands are located relative to neighboring islands. The map folds out nicely and everything is labeled clearly. Contrasts are good and islands are not too small.

A great map for getting around this part of the world.It's big - the area - so the map by definition cannot be too small-scaled. But if you only want to carry one map - this is it.

It's exactly what it says it is - a map of the Pacific Islands to show the general geography of the area, but not in as much detail as a guide book. These maps are hard to find but I got exactly what I wanted. It shows a big map of the Pacific Islands plus smaller maps of specific islands in more detail. The only thing I would like it to show which it doesn't, is the markers to show where Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia are(although without having all of NZ in it, obviously the bottom of the Polynesian triangle would be cut off.)

His boat was shelled by German troops. Baalsrud dove into the ice-covered waters and swam, with bullets flying around him, toward an island off the Norwegian coast. The rest of his party was killed on the spot, or captured and eventually executed, but Baalsrud made it to the beach and started climbing an icy mountain. He was chased by Nazis, and he killed one officer.He was hunted by about 50 Germans and left a trail in the deep snow. He’d lost one boot and sock, and he was bleeding from where his big toe had been shot off. He scrambled across the island and swam successively across the icy sound to two other islands. On the second, he lay dying of cold and exhaustion on the beach.Two girls found and led him to their home. And this is the core of the story. They carried the sled and him up a 3,000-foot mountain in the middle of a winter storm and across a frozen plateau to where another party was supposed to meet them. The other men weren’t there, and Gronvold was compelled to leave Baalsrud in a hole in the ice under a boulder.The other party missed the rendezvous because of a blizzard, and by the time they got there, days later, the tracks were covered and they could find no sign of him. A week later, Gronvold went up to retrieve Baalsrud’s body and was astonished to find him barely alive. Baalsrud spent the next 20 days in a sleeping bag immobilized in the snow, sporadically supplied by Gronvold and others.Over the next weeks, groups of men tried to drag him to Sweden but were driven back, and they had to shelter him again in holes in the ice. Baalsrud cut off his remaining toes with a penknife to save his feet. Tired of risking more Norwegian lives, he also attempted suicide.Finally, he was awoken by the sound of snorting reindeer. A group of Laps had arrived, and under German fire, they dragged him to Sweden.This astonishing story could only take place in a country where people are skilled on skis and in winter conditions. But there also is an interesting form of social capital on display. It’s a mixture of softness and hardness. Baalsrud was kept alive thanks to a serial outpouring of love and nurturing. He treated Baalsrud's frostbite and hid him in a remote shed across a lake to recover. He was alone for a week (a storm made it impossible for anyone to reach him). Gangrene invaded his legs. He stabbed them to drain the pus and blood. His eyesight recovered, but the pain was excruciating and he was starving. Baalsrud could no longer walk, so Gronvold and friends built a sled. They carried the sled and him up a 3,000-foot mountain in the middle of a winter storm and across a frozen plateau to where another party was supposed to meet them. The other men weren't there, and Gronvold was compelled to leave Baalsrud in a hole in the ice under a boulder. The other party missed the rendezvous because of a blizzard, and by the time they got there, days later, the tracks were covered and they could find no sign of him. A week later, Gronvold went up to retrieve Baalsrud's body and was astonished to find him barely alive. Baalsrud spent the next 20 days in a sleeping bag immobilized in the snow, sporadically supplied by Gronvold and others. Over the next weeks, groups of men tried to drag him to Sweden but were driven back, and they had to shelter him again in holes in the ice. Baalsrud cut off his remaining toes with a penknife to save his feet. Tired of risking more Norwegian lives, he also attempted suicide. Finally, he was awoken by the sound of snorting reindeer. A group of Laps had arrived, and under German fire, they dragged him to Sweden. This astonishing story could only take place in a country where people are skilled on skis and in winter conditions. But there also is an interesting form of social capital on display. It's a mixture of softness and hardness. Baalsrud was kept alive thanks to a serial outpouring of love and nurturing. At the same time, he and his rescuers displayed an unbelievable level of hardheaded toughness and resilience. That's a cultural cocktail bound to produce achievement in many spheres.

This book was excellent and well written. Great descriptions that took me to the places described in Norway. Horrendous survival story. Like none I have ever heard of. It was hard to put down. Anyone who picks it up will love reading it and living through some of the experiences with the heroes and others involved. The Norwegion people who worked to save this man were amazing and so heroic and determined. The young man's name escapes me at the moment, but to me any other person would have given up hope. He did not and survived to tell the tale. This was one of the best true story books I have read in a while.

I loved this book.It's about Jan Baalsrud, a Norwegian. He begins WWII as a courier between Stockholm and Oslo, gets caught by the Swedes, imprisoned, and then manages to make his way to England and join a group of other Norwegians being trained to return to their country and fight the Nazis. That's where the book begins, with Jan and the other men on his mission approaching the Norwegian coast. Their plan is to hide their sabotage gear, train local groups to resist the Nazis, and then attack a German airfield that's wrecking havoc on convoys between England and the Soviet Union. But their plans fall apart pretty quickly, and Jan soon finds himself alone in the snow with nothing but his clothing, his pistol, and one boot. What follows is how he survives and eventually makes it back to Sweden, with a lot of help along the way.I was initially interested in this book because of its title. I like titles with the words like "death" or "die" or "dead" in them. But the title isn't entirely accurate: Jan doesn't die (comes close several times). And the people who do die don't die alone--there's usually at least a gestapo agent around.But enough about the title. Jan is brave and resourceful and he can ski like something else. But then events leave him gradually more and more at the mercy of others, and the tough commando becomes vulnerable. Howarth did a wonderful job of finding an amazing story, researching it thoroughly, and then writing it in a way that uses good principles of storytelling so that this true story reads like a novel.We Die Alone is one of those books I recommend for just about everyone. Readers that enjoy Unbroken or The Long Walk may be especially interested in adding this to their to-read list.

There are so many other reviews that I won't even bother discussing the main events in this book. Suffice it to say that it is among the most incredible tales of survival that you will ever read, fiction or non-fiction. Jack London would have been afraid to submit such an outlandish tale to his publishers.That said, a few thoughts:1. I found the actions of the local Norwegian "Resistance Movement" almost more interesting than the actual tale. To be caught helping Baalsrud was an act the occupying Nazis would have punished severely, both the actual person that did it, his family and maybe even the whole village. And yet the local villagers were, for the most part, not intimidated. The bigger concern seemed to be that if too many people found out about the rescue effort, their attempts to help would be noticed by the Nazi occupiers and raise suspicions.2. Even more amazing, people in the next village were recruited based just on a request from a respected member of the first village. All this, without the use of a telephone, which was probably tapped by the Germans. Imagine your reaction if someone you don't know showed up at your door and said that so-and-so from the next town over wants you to climb a mountain in a blizzard and rescue someone...nevermind that the Germans will kill you and your family if you get caught...just do it.3. Baalsrud spends several weeks in a snow cave on the Norwegian "Outback", sometimes completely buried, with very limited supplies of food, fresh water, blankets or medical supplies. I am not sure I believe this is even possible, but yet the author seems to have done a credible job of researching the story. There are multiple sources for research material, and a credible looking timeline. Either Baalsrud is capable of hibernating, or memories have been corrupted in the ten years between the events and the story being told. I would believe either scenario.4. As many have pointed out, the editing and proofreading on this book were horrible. These sorts of errors ruin my reading experience, and most times I would abandon reading a book with this level of problems. In this instance, the story was captivating enough that I powered through the mistakes. The story was better than the proofreading was bad.5. The Kindle edition did not have a map-something sorely needed. Even Google-maps seemed unable to rise to the task for some of the locations mentioned in the story. An old Atlas that I hadn't used in years, showing topography and little hamlets of Norway, greatly enhanced the story.So find a good map, ignore the grammar and writing style, and start reading. You might have to suspend disbelief at some of the details, but no doubt the major points of the story are true. If nothing else, the tale of Jan Baalsrud and the Norwegian villagers will reaffirm your faith in the human will and spirit.Finally, since the characters in the story seemed to run on brandy, pour yourself a glass and toast these men and women...preferably on a cold, windy winter evening.

I had watched the movie about Jan Baalsrud's escape, but I wanted to know more about the details. This was the first book I found, so I immediately downloaded it to my Kindle. Afterwards, I found another book, "Defiant Courage" by Scott and Haug, that had a lot more detail. "We Die Alone" seemed fuzzy on some details and inconsistent on timelines, but it is a very quick read for those who just want the highlights.

This is the twelfth book (at last count) that my husband and I have read on sexual betrayal, so we have some perspective on current works on this topic during our recovery journey. After finding much edification from Stephen Arterburn's "Every Man's Battle" we were both appalled at Jason Martinkus's shallow and sometimes hypocritical chatter. He does not even address the integrity disorders and manic behaviors that cause out-of-control adultery, nor does he acknowledge the depth of sex addiction induced trauma inflicted on spouses and family members. The author's average guy tenor attributes sex addiction some type of all-purpose shame.Sensitive readers are advised to avoid sections that salaciously detail the author's exploits with too much information. His near-bragging tone comes across as he's been a bad, bad boy with a smirk. Although Stephen Arterburn's name is on the cover as a co-author, he limited his contribution to only the introduction and a brief afterword paragraph in some, but not all, chapters. This indicates that Arterburn did not endorse some chapters that reveal Martinkus's thinly veiled denial and narcissism about his sexual escapades."Shelley's Thoughts," promoted for wives as a book feature, are curiously absent from some chapters whose content probably embarrassed her. Her brief sections are printed illegibly in a sea of gray ink, suggesting that Martinkus is paying lip service to his doormat on the sidelines. Her "gray matter" offers wives some ridiculous suggestions from her experience, such as dressing in a more sexy style will make you so uncomfortable. No celebration of wives as proud, confident sexual partners here! We suspect that Shelley has a self-image crisis from her sex addict induced trauma.As some other reviewers noted, Martinkus's first nauseating comment at the end of Chapter One was that his sexual debauchery was "the best thing that ever happened" to his chump wife, in her own words. This would only make sense if she yearned for an open marriage, and the author's outrageous infidelity now permits her to cheat on him with equanimity, and without conscience. Such justification in shattering their wedding vows is pure hypocrisy.The chapter on male compartmentalization was blatantly offensive and blasphemous. The author argues that he never stopped loving his wife, and never failed in his love for Jesus during his many infidelities, including causing a lover's abortion. His "myth" of chump wives stating "He Mustn't Love Me" is not a myth! Sadly, it's true, your husband does not love you while enjoying adultery, for whatever psychotic reasons. This book is as morbidly and unintentionally humorous as the book "When Good Men Cheat." Martinkus trivializes his beliefs as a true Christian, and has consistently refused to take his marriage vows seriously during and after his infidelity. His entitlement promotes justification about men's ability to compartmentalize their lives, while women cannot. Oh, really? His own prostitutes are masters of compartmentalization.In his litany of "big myths" that impede marital recovery, the author claims that having more sex and different sexual activities with your spouse is a great myth that causes setbacks. We have found quite the opposite to be true, improving our intimate bonding with guides like "Erotic Intelligence" by Alexandra Katehakis. Ironically, Martinkus states that doing a variety of acts now exclusively with his wife caused him "triggering" episodes. This clearly indicates that the author is not nearly in recovery, still tempted by lascivious memories while making love to his spouse.We were both so turned off after reading the first half of this book that we decided to return it. Martinkus's repeated gloating about counseling troubled men "sitting in my office" suggested macho power problems, since he was fired from several other jobs. The author and his wife apparently still need intensive therapy. Steven Arterburn should take the responsibility of removing this unqualified sex addiction counselor from his dangerous position. We would assign this trash zero stars if that were a rating option.A far better resource for infidelity recovery is "Treating Trauma from Sexual Betrayal" by Dr. Kevin Skinner. His book is written with sensitivity, therapeutic exercises, and copious references to research. The aforementioned book by Katehakis is also very insightful.Ours is an independent reader review. My husband and I each started reading this book after our last “implosion.” I have never read anything in my life that resonated more with me than this book. Every. Single. Word. That’s why I feel gobsmacked! Jason Martinkus has clearly walked in the same shoes as my husband, and his wife the same as mine. Their story and his words of guidance are beacons of hope in an otherwise dark sea right now. I am able to see that my husband and I have clear paths forward for what work we both need to do...and my fervent prayer is that we have the strength to walk those paths.

I bought this for my husband after he confessed his sexual sin, and after we decided we were going to work through it and stay together. It is a wonderful book. I read it first and it was so helpful to me: how to understand what the heck happened to our marriage and what needs to be done to restore it and trust. I couldn't put to words what I would need and this book does that so well.

Forgiveness for sexual betrayal is extremely difficult for a wife, but thanks be to God that Jesus Christ provides the ultimate example of forgiveness. If you are not willing to invite Christ into your life, your marriage, and your recovery, I do not recommend this book.I particularly liked the Lego metaphor of building something new one block at a time. Sexual betrayal takes a baseball bat to the “sculpture” a husband and wife built, but there is hope of building something new and better if both are willing to put in some hard work. The recovery process is not going to happen overnight, but it can happen if couples can use the tools in this book to build up trust block-by-block.

This book has some really good advice that as a wife who's had her trust destroyed for 5 years straight from my husband sleeping with countless backpage prostitutes and countless bar sluts and tinder hoes, that the information would've been very helpful. If My husband was willing to do everything suggested and truly take it seriously, I have no doubt that I wouldve regained trust and security; however, I bought this hoping he'd read it and put effort and he's refused saying he doesn't have time to due to work and classes. I filed divorce for the 2nd time recently and although he once again begged me back with endless promises, hes once again gotten comfortable in his narcissistic, sex addict, pathological liar ways and there's no hope for him. This was a last ditch effort that for me failed because my husband is a piece of trash..... however, if your husband is someone worth anything at all and has the slightest bit of respect to read and apply this book, I highly recommend and think you'll appreciate it.

Common Sense InvestingI found a lot to like about the The Little Book of Common Sense Investing: The Only Way to Guarantee Your Fair Share of Stock Market Returns by John C. Bogle. Mr. Bogle was the founder of The Vanguard Group and is famous for creating the world’s first index mutual fund in 1975, the Vanguard 500 Index Fund.The logic of his index fund was to invest in a large number of stocks, all the stocks comprising the S&P 500, to make money from the combination of their growth and dividends. This is a departure from the more common view of investing in undervalued stocks to make money from an increase in their stock value.Bogle makes a convincing argument that the best way to get the value from the stock market is to invest in all the stocks by buying mutual funds based on indexes of the market that invest in all the stocks.The author points out that the real net income from stock investments is the investments’ gain minus the cost of the investments. The costs are relatively easy to determine in the case of retail brokers charging for a stock trade when buying or selling stocks. However, the costs are much more complicated for mutual funds because, in addition to the cost of the trade, in many cases there is an annual incentive sales fee for the broker for up to five years (up to 1.5% a year according to the author). I had no idea that there were hidden sales fees in addition to the purchase fee charged by the brokers. In addition to annual fees, most mutual funds typically have additional management fees of 2 to 3%. In comparison, index funds have low management fees (often .4% or lower) with no hidden sales fees.What is more disturbing is that 99% of mutual funds significantly underperform the S&P 500 index. When the excessive costs combined with the underperformance of mutual funds are compared to S&P index funds, the long term income differences are shocking. The net return after taxes of $10,000 invested in an indexed fund from 1980 to 2005 would have been $76,200 versus $16,700 for other mutual funds (for those mutual funds that survived). This represents 456% more net income to the investor with far less risk.If you are one of the 85% of investors who let their broker "manage" their assets, Bogle’s book may keep you awake at night. To sleep better, I switched to low cost, low risk index funds.The author’s perspective is unique since he invented the very first indexed funds. It is a little like reading Thomas Edison's thoughts about the light bulb. Bogle knows the issues and history of investing in indexes versus other types of mutual funds.This "common sense investing" book was easy to read and easy to understand. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting their investments to produce more income with less risk. Five Stars and hats off to the founder of index investing.

This book was an awesome read to a new-comer in the scene of investing. I'm not sophisticated in finance. Nor am I wanting to become too knowledgeable in this topic. I just needed to understand the basic to plunge in and invest in an easy, simple portfolio. But doing so takes a whole lot more understanding than just following a simple portfolio recipe. To make my simple portfolio, I dived into Mr Bogle's book. He explained how things work in the finance world, at least enough for me to feel confident about the decisions I'm now making in the finance department. I would recommend this to any beginner investor seeking more knowledge in the field of finance.

Great Book for the basics of investing with a strong focus on Index Funds. I suggest this be read by employees of firms that gave them limited info on their 401K. All the basics are here in this book. I have been invested for 12 years in Index funds. There have been up and downs but overall I am way ahead.

Good, quick read with great information for anyone who is trying to make sense of personal finance and basic investments. Everyone should read this in their 20s before filling out the paperwork for their first workplace 401K. If you read this one book you'll know enough to invest sensibly for retirement without getting ripped off by financial product salespeople, and you'll understand more about investing than 85% of the general population.

SO helpful. I went over this book with my money manager, and no surprise, he had all this BS to say about how Bogle is wrong. Needless to say, I fired the money manager. Investing has always seemed mysterious, which is what they want you to think! With this and a few other books, I feel just competent enough to do it myself (with a little help from friends and the Bogle website).

Such a great book for a confused investing noob. Got me up to speed in understanding why passive index fund investing is the only worry free long term strategy that consistenly wins, and why active trading always returns to the mean. I finally consolidated my retirement account and opened a vanguard account to move my assets into. Thanks John Bogle!

Mr. Bogle makes a solid argument repeatedly, by approaching the same question from multiple directions and supporting it with unimpeachable numbers. It reinforced some views that I had already developed on my own, but also clued me in to the adverse effects over time of high expense ratios and transaction costs.When I finished the book I liquidated a stock that pays a decent dividend but seems to have little growth potential, and a mutual fund that has excessive costs that I had overlooked. I put the money in a low-cost S&P 500 index fund that already made up a significant part of my portfolio.I agree with other reviewers who have criticized the book as repetitive, but it's worth reading for its style, wit, and clarity.

This next book in Cth'ka the creeper king series was epic but sad at the same time. Cth'ka can now hold lava, and may soon even be able to use two hands!!! However, the loss of the three other creepers was saddening, so I hope they get revenge on Steve by putting lava on his spawnpoint or something. It was still full of action, like when they attempted to raid Steve's castle, and the part when Worla was fighting Steve and Cth'ka can "fly" now.
