I really enjoyed this smallish, but compete book related to the use of “I” among three great Advaita teachers of the 20th century. The author presents a focus, summary, short biography and also notes on the relevance of the “I” concept in each of the three sections. This book was of particular interest for me, after having a decade of so experience with the material (Advaita). It may not be so approachable for those new to the teachings, o without having done the hard yards in practice. It is definitely a book I will re-read and go over more in depth. Overall, very happy to have purchased and read it. It delivers a new perspective on a core topic in Advaita- the “I”.

This book was my best discovery in a long time due to the inclusion of Atmananda material. While the work of the other two is readily available for e-book reading, it seems most or all of Atmanada's books are in paper form only. I live in New Zealand, the bottom of the world. The nation has one large book store chain. It takes a month to get a book from England. The extra freight on even Amazon books make them spendy. So thank you again, Mr. Renard. As a young father who has largely avoided the litany of parenting books on the market, I didn't know what to expect from John Medina's "Brain Rules for Baby." Purchased on a whim at the recommendation of a friend, the book sat on my shelf, unread, for several months until I realized that my somewhat laissez-faire style of parenting probably wasn't in the best interests of my children - my 15-month-old son and a baby daughter in the oven. Devouring its contents in about a week, I am very glad I had this epiphany sooner than later.Despite being a "developmental molecular biologist" by trade, Medina is a refreshingly savvy writer, opting to avoid much of the jargon that would make the book impenetrable for the untrained layman like me. The book is divided into five clear, topical sections:- Pregnancy (how to help your baby develop while in utero)- Relationship (how to avoid the relationship pitfalls many couples experience post-partum)- Smart Baby (how to optimize your child's brain development and intelligence)- Happy Baby (how to raise a happy, well-balanced child)- Moral Baby (how to help your child develop and nurture their moral compass)Medina does his best to base his recommendations on robust scientific research, which is a plus. As he states early in the introduction, "To gain my trust, research must pass my `grump factor.' To make it into this book, studies must first have been published in the refereed literature and then successfully replicated . . . Where I make an exception for cutting-edge research, reliable but not yet fully vetted by the passage of time, I will note it" (pp. 3). You can tell that he was very careful about choosing what material to include, later citing his distaste for research based on, "shoddy designs, biased agendas, lack of controls, non-randomized cohorts, too-few sample sizes, too few experiments - and lots of loud, even angry, opinions" (pp. 143). Medina knows his statistics, which makes it easier for me to trust that the recommendations he presents in the text have a solid foundation.Perhaps inevitably, it's hard to read a book like this and not feel somewhat inadequate and/or guilty - especially if you already have kids. I couldn't help but think of how much TV I've already let my little boy watch, how much more I should be talking with him to bolster his language acquisition, etc. Fortunately, Medina readily admits that the ideal is not going to be the reality when it comes to parenting: "A family based on every suggestion in this book is fantasy" (pp. 254). Being a parent has its own learning curve, and we're never going to perfectly implement best practices. But if reading this book only makes me a _slightly_ better parent, it will still have been worth it.So why not five stars? As much as I appreciate Medina's "grump factor" in filtering out unreliable data, there are two important topics I felt should have received much more coverage, considering their relative importance in a child's development: nutrition and music. Aside from nutritional imperatives for pregnant mothers, Medina has surprisingly little to say about nutrition beyond the breastfeeding stage. Perhaps he thought nutrition, one of the most controversial subjects out there, was intuitive?As for music, Medina has a bit more to say, but I have mixed feelings about how he presented it. I counted only a couple instances where Medina had something positive to say about the effect of music on a child's development, and in both cases music is cited as helping children better perceive others' emotions, increasing their "ability to establish and maintain friendships" (pp. 273). That's it for the positive; otherwise, Medina is fairly snarky in his dismissal of pro-music research, such as the idea that playing classical music will have a positive effect on a child's development. While I respect his good intentions to clear up erroneous myths, I fear that parents might walk away from this book believing that music is non-essential at best, irrelevant at worst - a tragic conclusion either way, in my opinion.Admittedly, I have a bias: I was raised by a mother who has been an advocate for music education and has proclaimed the positive effects of music on the brain for as long as I can remember (she even wrote a book on it: "Good Music Brighter Children"). Music has always been a major part of my life, and I intend to make it a priority with my own children. Considering Medina's admittance early on that, "Most of the data we have [regarding baby brain development is] associative, not causal," (pp. 7) it seems rather irresponsible for him to dismiss much of the positive research regarding music and brain development so flippantly. While music is certainly not a cure-all, I have good reason to believe, both from anecdotal experience and from the positive research I have read, that the effect of music on the brain goes far beyond simply helping children better perceive others' emotions.Despite my qualms, I would still highly recommend this book for prospective parents. What Medina left out does not invalidate what he included. There are some really excellent, practical ideas that all parents could benefit from (the book even closes with a "Practical Tips" chapter that breaks down much of the research into applicable chunks). While I am not an expert on "essential" parenting books, I am inclined to keep Medina's work within arm's length as I work on raising my young children.

This is one of my favorite thing to give to new/expecting parents & grandparents. It's incredibly well written and edited. I don't know a lot of science based texts (and this is VERY scientifically sound writing) that I would call a "page turner," but that is exactly what this is. The word "rules" in the title turns a lot of people off, understandably - babies don't need rules - but I assure you that there are NO rules of anytype in the way it comes across. It's a fascinating read that I wish was required reading! All OBs should give this to first time parents at their first appointment!

This book was a terrific read, and it offers simple ideas on how to help your baby develope. Shocker here - it promotes lots of things that DON'T involve buying expensive DVDs or toys. I can't say more without letting you get away without reading it... I loved that it discussed the science behind his suggestions, and that things weren't preachy or judgemental (as many of the baby development guides and parenting books out there are.)

This book is great. It helped me (a new dad) understand a lot of the emotional/physical changes my wife is going through and prepared me for some conflicts that were sure to arise. The book also delves into the science of how a baby develops and gives pointers (back with studies) on how promote healthy development. I plan on purchasing a copy for my brother as well.I was also lucky enough to catch a presentation by the author during a conference in California. Great information!

Our group is starting an educational pre-natal clinic for expectant mothers and fathers to teach them how to jump start their baby's brain and learning. We will use this small book as one of our teaching aids. We also have lots of the work by Glenn Doleman, as well. I reared such a child and she was a Duke Tip scholar (Duke University) at age 13 and in Europe studying at 15. By age 30 she had been to 35 foreign countries on her own and taught school classes in some of them.

I bought this book used from the seller and am excited to say that it arrived in excellent condition with a personalized note I find to be extremely fascinating and easy to follow. Great for anybody with a new baby or anybody that's interested in the developmental stages from in the womb to out in the New World.

This book is incredible. I'm generally quite skeptical of these types of books - it's just hard to be one size fits all, and unfortunately most "how to parent" books end up being too generic to be helpful. This one is different. I love that the first chapter (after the pregnancy chapters) focuses on the relationship between the parents. It's such an important topic, but SO rarely discussed. After that, the chapters start to shift to advice for parenting. Each chapter focuses on a premise, what comprises or influences that premise, and then the data that supports it (i.e. I want a happy child, here are the things we know/believe to be true about what drives happiness, here's how the research/data would suggest you go about interacting with your child to help him/her attain/learn the thing(s) that drives happiness). It's my favorite book my far.

About the Author

Kiini Ibura Salaam's fiction has been included in such publications as Dark Matter, Mojo: Conjure Stories, and Dark Eros. One of her earlier (and most distinctive) stories, ''Of Wings, Nectar, and Ancestors,'' was translated into Polish, and two of her short stories, ''Desire'' and ''Rosamojo,'' were praised in Publishers Weekly. Her essays have appeared in Essence, Ms., and Colonize This! Her article ''Navigating to No'' sparked a spate of radio interviews, a television appearance, and a college seminar, as well as earned a personal commentary award from the National Association of Black Journalists. Her essay No, which appeared in both Ms. Magazine and Utne Reader, was included in the Longman Publishers composition guide, Reading Into Writing. Though she was born and raised in New Orleans, Salaam lives with her daughter in Brooklyn.

NOTES ON DIVERSITY:This is another case where diversity is not really the right word to use here.1 This is a book of stories where, with one or two exceptions, the focus is on Black womanhood. Sometimes those Black women are in space. Sometimes they coexist alongside gods. Sometimes they live in New York and are beset by nostalgia for Louisiana. Sometimes they are aliens who communicate through dance. But unifying the collection of stories is a deep exploration of Black womanhood. It is a book written within a lived experience for others of that lived experience. It reminds me, in that sense, of Constance Burris’ BLACK BEAUTY.2All philosophizing aside, this book is full of characters of color. And women. And it has some queer representation.REVIEW:Salaam is a lovely, poetic writer. From her language choice to the actual structure of the stories themselves, most of the stories in this collection are lyrical and haunting.One of the clearest themes throughout all the stories is sex, which in virtually all cases3 is a powerfully positive and healing force in women’s lives. In stories like “Desire” and the trio of stories featuring the unnamed alien race represented by WaLiLa and MalKai who feast on human nectar (that is drawn out by way of sex), sex and sexuality is arguably coerced--but still, the power of it and the emotional connection it brings proves healing. Or at the very least complicated. The women in the stories remain agentic throughout even when used as vessels.But I was more drawn to some of the other themes woven through the stories.4 Movement-as-freedom and movement-as-communication comes up again and again. Most clearly in the WaLiLa and MalKai stories, where WaLiLa and MalKai must learn to forsake their original language of movement/dance for spoken human languages, and again in “Battle Royale.” In “Battle Royale”, the narrator’s insistence on engaging in the flashing game/dance of razors leads to the fever-dream punishment meted out by his grandfather. But movement, or the lack of it, and how it can bring a different kind of freedom comes up in “Debris”, too.There is an openness in Salaam’s resolutions that I enjoyed. Many of the stories were about a change of direction, a decision point, and were other writers would tell you where the characters were going, Salaam refuses to reveal what happens next. The conflict was that there was a decision to make, she seems to suggest. The trick of her stories is that there emotional gratification in knowing that a decision was made, but we don’t know which path was taken.Salaam’s stories are fascinating. In particular, I liked “Debris”, “Ferret”, and “Ancient, Ancient”. “Rosamojo” was hard for me to read--I found it triggering--but it is a very good story._____1: I need to write this post already about My Issues With The Word Diversity.2: Although, if you’re into short speculative fiction featuring Black characters you should really check out BLACK BEAUTY, too.3: The exception to this is “Rosamojo”. It is a very good story, but if you are triggered by sexual assault, especially as a survivor of childhood trauma, tread with caution.4: I’m ace, man, I’m not getting the same sex-as-rapture thing these characters are getting.

I love short stories and Salaam's collection was wonderfully different. I didn't know what I was getting into, but I was quickly caught up in her various worlds.Desire: The opening story took me straight to Africa and warring, ancient gods and a woman who rediscovers her sexuality after years of marriage and children. I felt for all the characters, mortal and immortal. One of my equal second favourites.The next three stories (Of Wings, Nectar and Ancestors, MalKai's Last Seduction and At Life's Limits) are about WaLiLa and her group, and they are strange and wonderful. I don't want to say too much and spoil the magic of these three. But I tell you, I found my body swaying after the last story to invisible music and my feet tapping.I've read Rosamojo before and it makes me alternately mad and sad every time I read it. I want to wrap my arms around her, but she doesn't need me. She's strong.Battle Royale and Ferret both perplexed and intrigued me.K-USH: The Legend of the Last Wero was my other equal second favourite of the collection. I would like to read more about these people.Marie was fantastic, a story about a woman rediscovering herself and her culture. I cheered for her.The final story, Pod Rendevous, blew me away. Loved it. Again, I would like to read more about this culture.So much of this collection was about metamorphosis, either just about to happen or in the thick of it. This is a beautifully realised collection that will open your eyes and your mind.

I bought this book after finding out it was a co-winner of the 2012 James Tiptree, Jr. Award. As one might expect from this award the book is a powerful commentary on gender relations but also well-crafted fiction.However if one is a casual reader of science fiction, fantasy, or horror this type of book may be quite frustrating for you. You cannot read it quickly, you cannot read it casually, you must engage with each story one at a time, you must roll the ideas and images in your head for a while to understand and appreciate them.Salaam's work goes beyond gender discussion into race issues, family dynamics, personal conflicts, and the a multitude of possible futures, pasts, and alternatives. None of her characters -- female or male -- are perfect or straightforward. If you can handle that then this book may be well worth your effort. For teachers out there this would be a very powerful book to include in a contemporary literature, gender studies, or race studies course but you will have to devote a few weeks to it to fully get students through it and to help them wrestle with the concepts.

Salaam's a true master of the craft; I read her to learn as much as to enjoy. Her plots are delicately constructed, but I think of them in jeweler's terms. They are the setting for the gems that are her scenes that ooze passion, emotion, and sensuality. With clever formatting, she achieves cinematic intercut scenes, modulates the voice of characters to let us see them from the inside, and shows the scene from such different perspectives, your head spin if it wasn't all so enthralling.People who know my work should note, Salaam writes with an unabashed sexuality. If you prefer my LDS chick lit, this is *definitely* different. Be ready to check preconceptions and inhibitions at the door. In Salaam's world, the depths of one man's shame are as expansive as our universe and the fall of an angel from a religion older than time evokes a soft pain washed away by morning. A former student of Octavia Butler and Nalo Hopkinson, Kiini Ibura Salaam takes the genre in new and mind blowing directions.

This Kindle offering is a good read if you care to review the most important cases the US Supreme Court has decided. As it states each case is explained well and the decisions are in enough detail, for myself, a layman and not a lawyer, to read comfortably without that urge to reread everything twice for understanding. This is a good item for a college class or a High School teacher to allow students to pick a subject to do a report on. This is worth the money and it is a good read.

If you are an attorney or just good with legalese this book stands alone in setting these majors decisions side by side. The history of the Supreme Court decisions allows us to to better understand the struggles today such as Roe v Wade and what's at stake for all of us.

All the critics are right: no dissenting opinions, but still a good read. I might be odd, but I love reading case law and so this book was right up my alley.

I bought this book after my first semester for my second bachelors in paralegal studies. Im so glad I did because it is filled with all the court cases we had talked about as well as cases my family law professor quoted from during my spring semester. It had everything in great detail and serves its purpose! I read it before my spring semester and I'm so glad I did. Very helpful!!!!

As an e-book, this is a must own. It is a compact way to carry around the most frequently cited cases that every lawyer should carry in their briefcase if they could. Now I have all 50 cases on my iPad.

In law school this was extremely helpful study aid.

About the Author

Mark Havens’s photographs have been published and exhibited internationally. Reviews of his work have appeared in publications ranging from the New York Times to The Paris Review. He is a professor at Philadelphia University.Jamer Hunt is Director of the Transdisciplinary Design Graduate Program at Parsons the New School for Design. Out of Season: The Vanishing Architecture of the Wildwoods combines two of my favorite things: art photography of colorful, clever images and the '60s Wildwood I loved and is slipping away.Featured on the cover and inside is one of my favorite motels, the great-but-gone Hialeah, once located in Wildwood Crest. I stayed there with my family in 1966 as well as the Pan American ('67) and Admiral ('68), now called the Ocean View, which also take their star turns in Out of Season.The big, bold images in this coffee table book taken by Mark Haven in the off season let your eye wander unobstructed by the summer influx of vacationers to appreciate the lines, colors and simple architectural tricks that made these buildings deceptively simple but gems nonetheless. The original neon signs, some of which were works of art in their own right, get a few pages. Haven also trained his lens several times on the beach-type chairs that punctuate the motel landscape outside the rooms and the telephone booths installed in the parking lots. These seemingly mundane items carry a weight that delight the eye —probably something you hadn't considered until Haven generously points it out. If you remember the glossy postcards of these motels, these photographs strip away the pretense and show the beauty within.As someone who grew up summering and working in Wildwood and walking its streets for decades, I never could figure out what made it all work. With this handsome book, Haven takes some of the mystery out of what made Wildwood magical, kindly taking this aging shore town beyond its rough-around-edges image.The two essays are worth your time as well. Joseph Giovanni in his aptly named essay "Spontaneous Combustion" touches on some of academics of Wildwood's famous motel architecture, and also mentions the importance of the pre-WWII rooming houses that have vanished along with Doo-Woop motels. We agree that their replacement with modern condominiums has changed the town's lively street culture for the worst. No looming three-story condo will ever need an offbeat or elderly Irish widow landlady to run it.Each photo is time-stamped but not date-stamped, which is a shame. Including the day, month and year would have provided even more context. After all, history is the subject here.Also, I am the author of a small book of memoir poems about Wildwood called "The Island of Decades Before."

A truly great book of photographs. I’m going to place this alongside Joel Meyerowitz’s “ A Summers Day” as a favored collection of images that emotionally transport me right to the subject. I know (and knew) almost all of these places and looking at these pictures makes me feel as if it’s a crisp fall day and I’m there taking a walk.

Having been a frequent visitor in the 1980s and 90s, I've long thought that the motels of Wildwood Crest deserved more attention, not merely for being relics of the doo-wop era of the 1950s and 60s, but for being a symbol of America's love affair with the beach: a place for relaxation and contemplation. As a child of the 80s, I had no concept of 1960s architecture; Wildwood was simply a magical place unlike any other I knew. Mark Haven's book masterfully captures this surreal quality in stunningly quiet neon-drenched imagery, devoid of cars and crowds that might tempt us to date the photos. Like Wildwood itself, Havens' work is truly timeless.

What a treat this book is. Contemplating the detail of each beautiful photograph, without people or cars, I could feel the anticipation and excitement that families felt going on vacation in Wildwood. Grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins gathering as mine did to relish time together in these motels. Each taken at just the right time of day, these photographs are perfect for reflecting on all the memories these buildings hold.

While the word “Vanishing” in the subhead gave me some clue, I wasn’t prepared for just how haunted these incredible images would leave me. The photographs celebrate the subject while never playing up the dilapidation like so much “ruin porn” I’ve seen in other photography books. The simple absence of people and cars in the off season is the only indication that these architectural artifacts are, in many instances, headed for a permanent winter. And that’s also done without commentary, with no malice for development or fantasy for a past that we can never hold onto, just time’s steady indifference---which in the end is the most powerful statement of all.

This is one of my favorite books on my book shelf. The imagery in this is so gorgeous, the layout is clean, allowing the photos to breathe and it makes for a perfect addition to my photography collection. I came across this work by chance, and can honestly say that Mark Havens captures motels (many of them now closed) in a way that no-one has before. I look forward to more publications by Mark Havens. This is a must buy!
